What are you doing today, II

We all have days like that. It was HOT 🔥 🥵 today. I didn't get much done.

I did make plans to help out a camp friend with the brakes on his truck. His dad was a friend of mine and passed away last year. He's in his early 20s and has taken on the role of "man of the house". He was looking around for a shop to do the work. I told him I would teach him how so he can do it going forward

Hot here too, getting ready for another work cabin trip, changed my oil today and made a support for the wind generator I’m installing up there

lets see up at 1:30 to shower and go cook pancakes for runners and staff of a 100 mile forest trail run run starts at 5:00AM the runners have until 5:00 pm sunday (tomorrow) staff the 2nd road crossing for the runners for 5 hours as they come through another crew does the crossing at midnight to 5AM its 8:00 pm now and I'm running out of steam for today.
Tomorrow's schedule up at 5:00 cook breakfast sandwiches for staff and runners that came last night we have another crew coming in at 11:00 to do lunch and dinner

Still digging up pond bottom scum.
Each shovel full is black gold with some stones in it I must glean out one shovel load at a time. I use a gloved had to crumble the black dirt and remove the 1" to 3" round gravel that formerly made up the pond bottom.

Right now, I seem to have enough to cover my big flower bed with 3.O" of black gold dirt. A lot of healthy worms in it. Whoopie!

Tomorrow, I will scavenge some not-so-good soil and use it to enrich the north side yard lawn area. A 6'X20' section of lawn that did not do well after last summer's planting. Hard clay. I got my roto tiller running yesterday (stuck needle valve again) and that will make short work of it.

Got the giant TV up on the cabinets in the shop. Broke the fire stick. Hooked up the optical to a DAC and to the Carver TFM35 in the office with the Cerwin Vegas. Rocking Marley at 250 watts per channel

Sweet setup! (And shop).
That's not a smart TV? That's all I'm using now so I can avoid the fire stick.

I'm home from camp. I've been out there since Wednesday. It was hot. It's still hot today. We had a Mexican Fiesta yesterday with our camp friends. One of them brought a couple of young coworkers who just happened to be Mexican. Somewhat of a rarity in Canada. It was fun.

I forgot to mention that I will be running like mad this week. It's our fair weekend this weekend. My wife is on the committee organizing it. I help out for the week leading up to it by doing a lot of the background stuff running around fixing things. First up were the three bbqs the fairgrounds committee owns. They were complaining about them last year and found alternatives to use for the fair. I found out about it and told my wife to get her shoes on. We were over to the fairgrounds property in 5 minutes with my trailer. I loaded them up and hauled them home to give them a once over. One, they were complaining about hot and cold spots. Ok. Lift the lid, one look showed the burner covers out of place. I moved them back and it works. The second one was a bit more involved as the four burners were not in line with the valves. It works now. The third just needs new burner heat covers. Easy fix.

I will be using one of them as I am running a BBQ kitchen feeding roughly 100 volunteers lunch and supper. Hot dogs smokies burgers. For lunch and supper Friday Saturday and Sunday. Kind of a refreshments stop throughout the day as well with pop water coffee tea. I did it last year with about 3 days notice. So I will be running picking up supplies for my kitchen. And we are staying there with the fifth wheel as well as bringing our two golf carts to use. I have to get it all over there.

Note the Hawk crossing sign. We posted it ten years ago. Finally, we have birds that follow the rules.

The two chicks, one of which is in the photo, are named Calvin and Hobbs. Mom and dad are Linus and Lucy.

They are Cooper Hawks. Now, if they would just rid us of the squirrels.

Braved the heat and the mosquitoes to patch all the cancer on my Tucker. Borrowed a welder from my Kid, had to switch polarity to "positive ground" to utilize flux-core wire. (THAT was a job... this unit was made exclusively for "Negative Ground"). My Son has never welded in his life... he found this welder at a garage sale and just thought he needed one. The Tucker's battery stand now is rigid and stable. Almost time to get the new engine in it. (Almost). A few more issues to address, then re-assembly.

We got a good rain a few hours after I finished for the day. The tomatoes are enjoying it.

I've been helping my neighbour friend Pat get all her remaining stuff out of her apartment.
She's going to officially be out this evening.

She loves the farm house, but it's old (and beautiful) with no air conditioning.
It still has some of those push button wall off/on switches which will eventually be replaced.

She's moving to a rural area in Florida,Ohio.
She told me the area, which is kind of historic, but right now I cannot remember what they call it??
ETA Girty Island!

Anyway, haven't been doing anything exciting except for working ( trust me, it's BEEN exciting because of our new dementia unit) 🤪😖😂
More on that another time.
Maybe...

I've got the 3 bbqs for the fairgrounds property fixed. I did a few things to my fifth wheel flat deck trailer to make it road worthy then took it for it's maiden voyage as a flat deck trailer instead of a camper.

I decided to mow the lawn this afternoon. It's HOT. The black flies are a pain.

you might suggest a window ac unit for the bedroom, at least she can get a good nights sleep.

I headed out yesterday morning get some keys cut at the hardware store 10k west of me. They no longer cut keys. Off to the city 25k east to get keys cut. Back home to test them at the fairgrounds. They work. Next I emptied my cargo trailer and started loading up everything I'm going to need this weekend as I'm feeding all the volunteers. I needed two folding tables from my garage. One was still full of crap from various projects from the past year in the shop. I got that cleaned off. Then decided to tackle the quad that'd been sitting in front of the shop all summer waiting for new exhaust rings installed. It's done. Then I mowed the yard. And graded the driveway with the plow truck. In the evening, we headed to shop for groceries for the weekend at the fair. A whole whack of burgers and hot dogs along with the buns.

Today I'm back at the fairgrounds following a vet appointment this morning for one of our dogs. I'll be setting up my kitchen area for feeding all of the volunteers. The fair rides are there setting up today. We are hauling our fifth wheel camper to stay there for the weekend. The fairgrounds property actually backs up to ours. But it's just easier to stay right there as my wife is the treasurer for the fairgrounds committee and has to be available all day. I am running a 2hr BBQ kitchen at lunch and supper for 3 days. We picked up 6 cases of 40 burgers each and will probably need all of them.

I've been dealing with "Pink Eye" for three days now. It started on the very right of my right eye and progressed to the left side. Painful and distorted vision. Crumpy has scolded me several times for not going to a doctor.

OTC drops have helped and today appears to be the last day. Vision is clear and very little discomfort. It's not that I am a tough bird.
Just stubborn.

So back to work.

Well, I'm getting a potential new neighbour.
Thing is, this woman is one of the "society" members in the county.
She's used to having the best OF the best. 🙄

I spoke with our building managers and landlord today.
They said she did nothing but complain about everything in the apartment.

●Didn't like the lazy susan in the one cupboard.
●Didn't like where the refrigerator has to be.
●Said she wants the bedroom carpet replaced and the living room walls painted blue.
She was told the apartment was on a waiting list, and to look elsewhere if she wasn't going to be happy.

These apartments are nice!
Maybe she needs to find a room at the Ritz-Carlton 😂

Ahhh Franc, the dreaded pink eye. Good luck with that, hopefully it is nearing the end of its course.

PG, pray she doesn't move in!

Kobe is at Grandma's but we do have big news. He has officially started KINDERGARTEN so he is a big boy now! We have a new schedule with him, don't get him every week but we will have him for some of his school breaks and every other weekend, and some odd days mixed into to the mix.

I am 'over' whatever flu/cold/illness that I had last week. It lasted less than the predicted week, so for that I am grateful.

Mowed a good bit of the lawn. Need to do the finish mowing by the house. But the back field, valley area and front lawns are done. Took the dogs down to the garden to harvest what we could glean. None of the ripe cherry tomatoes made it back to the house, I ate all of them. Did manage to get some squash, zucchini and a single cuke. Eggplants and peppers are looking good, but not yet ready. Tomatoes are abundant, but mostly green. Got a few small watermelons growing, not much going on with the pumpkins others than flowering, and they have been doing that for a while.

Mitty goes down to the garden with me off leash, he is a good boy. Walter the little terrier drags a 30' lead because she tends to wander. The garden is down a path through the woods and starts about a 40' elevation drop below the backside of the house. The house is all but invisible from the garden due to the drop and the woods.

Today Walter stuck close by, which is unusual but allowed me to prowl the garden for produce. Mitty disappeared for a bit but was never out of earshot and responded promptly when hailed. I do worry about him chasing a deer, he is not the smartest dog and pretty excitable but I've called him off rabbit pursuit and he listens so perhaps he'd listen if going out after a deer?

Calvin and Hobbs have another sibling. It seems there are more than two chicks as three were standing on the big Green Ash limbs this morning. We haven't come up with a new name yet.

This presumes the egg clutch was four eggs as one chick fell to the ground during a heavy storm and did not survive.

Assuming one of the baby hawks was a girl, she could be Susie, for Calvin's friend Susie Derkins. :)

Karening at its best!!!

Karening at its best!!!
Tom, she was supposed to be here this evening to start moving in.
Nothing.
No show.
Maybe she found one of those big rentals over by the river with chandeliers that go for over $1200 a month for one bedroom.
I've talked to some people who have lived here since birth.
The only thing I've heard was what??
Her?
I guess she and her husband are on the splits and she's looking for something temp and fast.
Good luck to her.
This isn't the place.
They want a long time good tenant.
Not a temporary snobby flopper.

Playing lumberjack again today. Light duty lumberjack maybe.

The school bus has started its daily trips past my home and when the trees reach out over the edge of the road she gets crabby because it scratches her pretty yellow bus. There is about 75' of tree line by my mailbox that grows right up against the road, mostly scrap trees. That entire 75' run is cut about 5-6' back from the road and as high as I could reach with the Stihl extension saw.

Low 90's and humid so it was pretty tough work, even if there was no heavy cutting. There was one deadfall that I cut up a bit too. Most of that will remain in place and just decompose in place, but the branches that were reaching up are now limbed off and a section of the trunk cut back.

The Ryobi 40volt battery chain saw needs a new chain. I think I have a couple spares. I lent it to a fencing club in Chicago to cut back some branches, the coach had never used a chain saw before so figured the battery saw was a better choice to lend him than a gas powered saw. Pretty sure it made contact with some concrete or something while he was using it. I got a couple cuts made, but damn :smileywac

The tiny 1 hand chain saw is still impressing the heck out of me, that came in handy too.
