Calling all knowledgable men........chainsaw

My saw came with the safety chain. I bought the dangerous chains as "spairs".

My McCullich would only work with their chain which was of course an anti-kickback, non-cutting POS. Unfortunately a tree fell on that saw... :dizzy:

yea, the safety chains degrade performance way too much...
change the chain, grab on real tight, and rip away...

One of the major differences between professional and consumer saws that consumer saws must be equipped with low-kickback chain (or safety chain) when they are purchased. These chains are required on all saws that have an engine smaller than 3.8 cubic inches.

Whew, believe it or not, I'm not violating the law! :thumb: My Stihl has a 3.9 cubic inch engine.

What's the law say when putting that same size engine on a blender? I gotta make me one of those gas powered blenders for the pool house parties. Hey, I have a couple of gas powered Kubota engines I got from BC a while back that are just sitting on the shelf. Now I just need to figure how to make a blender run off of one of them. :w00t:

When you hook it up to a tweaked out 12 valve Cummins, let me know :punk:

Cowgirl, you out there? Did we scare you off with all our chainsaw tangents?

Anyway, I was at a hardware store last night that happens to carry Stihl, I couldn't help but browse over their stock and this thread came to mind again.

They didn't have a 230, they had both sides of it though [210 and 250 IIRC] yet neither felt like a Stihl to me; I know a rather stupid statement, but after the rather limited range of Stihls I've handled [a lot of 029s around here] I have this narrow perception of what they should feel like; I almost liked the Poulan there better and it had a larger engine for about half the price [now once running or in a log, I may differ completely], but they don't have the hardiest reputation.

The only one there that "felt" right to me was a 270 [and was the smallest that the logjaws didn't look like some after-thought too]; even the 390 just didn't "feel" right [however, among nothing but green bars and chain on the rack and all the saws, this one snuck in with a yellow chain!] to me; but then again for that kind of money I still don't regret going the one step further to the 361 anyway.

All of them had the fancy fill caps, for better or worse.

Oh well, just more rambling. Hope all is well Cowgirl.

I'm still here, we went up to the mtns. on Monday so I didn't have any internet service. I do believe I now know more about chainsaws then I had ever hoped too. I decided to stay with a Stihl, however, I can not find a 230 either. So lucky for him, I will just have to upgrade. I haven't yet decided on what model, still checking them out. I will have to decide by this weekend.
Thanks for everyones help!

OK, I saw you looking at the beerpops; are you going to tell us what you chose or keep us in suspense until Christmas? :w00t:

Hey now, that's kinda personal isn't it? :alc:

Ya just can't go on and let women know which bars we prefer now...

:yum:

That first part had me thinking you were acusing RBack of bragging about his 18"

Back on topic, since I was the one :poke: about the outcome, am quite happy to see Cowgirl posted the update, buuUTTT - since RBack brought it up - details are always good!

Blunt or pointy bar, how long, yellow or green chain, how knowledgeable/friendly/helpful was the dealer - heck, how did the entire decision play out: before & at the dealer, carry case, spare chain, accessories, safety gear? ..... oh my, this is starting to make me feel like a gossipy old lady!

Oh, BTW, I can't confirm whether it is built like the 029s, and the pro's will banter that you can get more power in 13lb or less weight in 3.8HP, but you sure won't for the money: I say great choice! :thumb:

You guys crack me up. LOL

I'm not good with details. So here is what I know, its orange and I believe it has an 18 inch chain (unknown what color), and I believe it is blunt. The dealer was quite friendly and knowledgeable.

I made my decision based on all the knowledge I learned for all of you great people. I wanted a saw similar to what he orginally asked for. I only found two dealers within a 30 mile radius of me. The dealer closest to me, didn't work out so well. I went into the store, which happens to be a farm and ranch story. I looked at several chainsaws for quite awhile, and no one was around to help or answer questions so I left. The other dealer is in the city I work for and seemed very happy to help. They took the time to explain the differences between chainsaws. They also showed me how to use the chainsaw. Basicly they gave me a class on "how to use a chainsaw for dummies"

I decided on the MS 290 since it was a great upgrade and still allowed me to think about accessories. Since I am not sure what accessories he already has, I decided I would leave the accessories to an after christmas shopping spree.

Bump...

So what was the outcome? How was the shopping spree? Is he trying to hunt me down because I helped guide you wrong and flirt too much to boot?:shifty:

He loved the chain saw, and the shopping spree was quite expensive. I didn't know there were so many extras. Gee there is the gloves, the chaps, the chains, oil, oil can, and of course the chain saw container. I am sure I missing some things. I had to finally put a stop the shopping spree. I think he was too happy with the chain saw and forgot all about you rback. So don't worry your safe for now.

He didn't like it.
Big nasty breakup.
She's joining the FBI.

You forgot one thing, I know how to use the chain saw. So I was thinking there should be another line between nasty breakup and joining the FBI.

The list price on that saw case is nasty ($50; I think)! No doubt nice to have though. Buying a saw from them, it would have been nice if they included it at cost, but not sure if they would during a shopping spree after the sale.

I still think the helmet/earmuff combo is a pretty serious accessory (I don't use chaps or gloves, though probably should use the former) to consider, but no doubt he needed the oil and spare chain if he's going beyond the backyard!

Glad to hear he likes it! :coolshade

I got my case and hat for 30 i think when I bought the saw... I could dig out the receipt and look.... The case is a must have.. I don't have chaps, but always where good leather gloves. I have ear plugs I wear when I do a lot of cutting. If I am only trimming a few branches or something I don't bother with them. I bought all my stuff at one time and I know I saved some cash at the time.

I didn't get a hat! :hammer: But think we paid $25 or less [like you, we rolled it all into one deal], so no complaints.

However, a couple years earlier I got a free orange t-shirt with the brushcutter: looks a bit like the knock off prison t-shirts the teens sport around, but a bit closer proudly sports Stihl instead. I love wearing that shirt, but I think they quit making them.

now that he's got the saw, check out the www.logosol.com website - they're having a sale on frames you can mount the saw to to make it a stationary sawmill.
there's also a bracket you can get with plans to make a portable one...

I should have caught this before, but "how dare you report back without telling us what type of chain he got!" :hammer:

:poke:

 :flowers:

:whistling: Now, I do believe there was fair warning..

Re: Calling all knowledgable men........chainsaw
Buy him all the accessories! Helmet combo (I'm far from being an obsesive safety nut, but really like it), gloves, chaps, maybe some steel toe boots, saw case (I believe in Stihl it's universal up to 20" bar; I'm not exactly impressed with their case [I think the older ones were quite nice though], but a different brand wouldn't seem right) and don't forget a file.

Seriously though: sure glad he liked it! Thank you for a fun thread and the opportunity to spend your money! :thumb:

:bonk: Rback, are all the women down that way such Smart Alecs?

sawchain not chainsaw I'm guessing .050 X 3/8 RSC3 [18" bar IRRC; Rollomatic E perhaps?] already on there; maybe he likes it.

My only guess, on that carry case, is that they intentionally have the MSRP (and strongly encourage their dealers to hold the price except with a saw purchase) set high enough that a person looking at a new case might just start thinking about a new saw.

I knew when I saw the reply that she did not understand the question. I thought about telling her so she could answer it, but my guess is that he went back and bought chains and she has no clue what he bought. Hopefully he got the "real" ones and not the anti-kick BS.

Figured it was probably mis-read, but I still like my theory better! :shifty:

With the pressure I think most of the dealers [or at least in Sioux Falls; another reason I still like Watertown's Stihl dealer better] are getting, it must be green chain on both the saw and the spares. Else, I would have suspected an interesting post relating the story:
"Which chain?"
"RSC [or RMC or whatever]"
"but RSC3 works just a good"
"no, I want RSC"
"we don't ussually sell that"
"but that's what I want to use"
"the RSC3 is much safer"
"I don't like fatique from taking longer to cut"......

My conversation was very short. It went something like this...

"We only have one extra of the low-kick chain."

"What's the difference in the cut?"

"The other chain cuts better and stays sharp longer, but the low-kick is MUCH safer."

"That's great. I am buying a saw to cut wood, not my leg off. I am plenty young, strong and experienced. Give me the real chains please."
