I'd like to keep the politics out of this thread. Keeping bailouts, subsidies... out of the equation, if you were to buy a new pickup today, what brand would you choose?

Let's assume 1/2 or 3/4 ton.

I really like the looks of the current GMCs. Didn't care for the Chevy so much when it came out, but it is growing on me.

Never have been a Ford fan, but some of the older Super Duties didn't look too bad. I think they have ruined them since about 2008 on with the funky headlight placement. Don't even get me started on the problems with the 6.0, I know too many people that got rid of them because of problems with them. Some that didn't want to, but after the 3rd time of sitting along the highway with their horses, something had to be done. One went to Chevy, one went with the new 6.4 Ford both are now happy.

Dodge has just always been butt ugly to me and uncomfortable. Cousin has an '05 Dodge with the 5.7 drive by wire. Seems like it takes forever for the truck to realize you gave it the gas. I remember driving it when it was new and didn't like it. Drove it again the other day because they were borrowing my stock trailer to hook it up. Really made it difficult to hook the trailer up.

When did Toyota start making a truck? :)

going on beatability here, as much as i love my Fords, our 05 Chevy 1500 we use as a parts runner at the shop is fricking solid as hell. this thing gets the shit beat out of it all day every day, and the total work done on it is alternator, small trans fix, and 2 front wheel bearings. also, its never had any maintenance other than oil changes and its at least 130k on it so far. so i think that in reliability i would pick the chevy

I picked chevy for simple fact that if I'm gonna pay that kind of money for a truck, it's gonna be reliable, comfortable, have a smooth ride. I've had a dodge before(a 1995). It was a tough truck but rode like a lumber wagon and was gutless. Never have been a fan of fords simply for the fact that I like to be able to feel my butt after driving for a few hours. Sitting on a park bench is not really my thing. I will say one thing for the ford and dodge though. I like the ride height on them more than on the chevy.

I was checking out the new dodge 1500 at our trade show last weekend. They've gone to a coil suspension both front and rear. The salesman said it has improved the ride over the previous models with the leaf spring rear suspension. They also lowered the ride height.(which I'm not a fan of)

All in all, they've all got good features and bad features. I've been a chevy fan for a long time and aside from the dodge I owned, they've always been parked in my yard. I just prefer the chev for the ride and comfort.

I'm still a Chevy guy. I still have my 93 with 197k on her now. Still runs fine. I also bought an 05 Silverado last year and it's still like new. Less than 50k on her ...but close. I'm at 49,600 now.

In my case as far as a decision it would be what model 1500, 2500, & 3500.

You pick the size and then comment/vote on what you chose and why.

In general, I was thinking 1/2 & 3/4 ton (not diesel)

Although my grandfather and my father clearly didn't think anything but Chevy trucks existed, looking at years and years of actuarial data on repair statistics moved me to Ford. This is one case where actual data agrees with what Consumer Reports show on reliability. Fortunately for me, I just haven't liked the look of GM pickups in the last 15 or 20 years. It looks like their frames hang down like someone put a body lift on them; the poor man's lift kit.

I do have a lot of business with GM dealers, so I keep around an Impala to drive when I go visit them. Unfortunately, it's a prime example of why GM went belly up. They cut so many corners on that car that it's embarrassing. I mean, seriously, how much money did GM save by not clear coating the door jams or underside of the trunk lid? Fortunately the powertrain seems decent. The seat heaters have quit, the passenger power tilt on the seat quit, the stinking steering column has to be fixed about once a year etc. etc. When I looked at our repair statistics, my problems seem to be pretty well par for the course for a 2006 or older Impala.

If I had to do it today, without any further research, I'd get a Toyota Tacoma because they get decent mileage and I can reach over the edge of the bed.
What good is a truck that I can hardly even SEE into the bed of ?

Edit to add: I think they are rated to tow a 5000 pound trailer so for most of the time that would be great. I already have another truck to haul heavier trailers.

Just hauling firewood, I've been guilty of severely over-loading every half ton pickup I've ever owned. I suppose it depends on your intended use. If it's going to be mostly a car with the ability to occasionally haul something too big to fit in a car, I'd go with a half ton. Otherwise 3/4 ton all the way.

I have driven the 2010 Chevs and was not impressed, drive a 3/4 ton Dodge loaded to the nuts with a mobile lab and cant really complain about it on the highway except for the fuel milage, I have driven and owned Fords . My current /must get me out of the bush fishing truck is a Toyota. Bottom line I would buy a Toyota in a heart beat. This thing is a 1992 with 300k km and this weekend I have to change the power steering hose which is the original. Last time Groomer Dude rode in it I had to change front brakes , this is my go to, get er done truck.
As for payload I often haul a 300 gallon water tank to fill my swimming pool. At highway speed it handles it no problem.

Chevy or gmc for me. Fords are ok trucks but the mileage on one capable of serious hauling sucks. My current SRW 3500 is a strong truck and plows like a champ.

I have owned several Fords, several Chevys and one piss poor fucking piece of red slimy shit Dodge truck. My ass currently sits atop a '03 Chevy Express 2500 van which has given me good service with only routine and preventive maintenance. I don't beat on a truck, so maybe that's why they last for me (except for that $**@#$%^^#&$*@* Dodge piece of useless shit).

Why don't you tell us how you really feel about dodge.:w00t2:

Yup. I can vouch for Norscaner. His truck was in serious need of brakes when I last saw him. My dentist is still repairing the damage:whistling::whistling::whistling:

for chevy i wouldn't own any thing after 1987 except for a v3500 on dodce nothing after 94 and ford nothing ater 1979 i do like the old idi 6.9's amd 7.3 engines but ford doors are so flimsey you listen to them rattle on the strikers when driving on dirt roads wich is all we have aroud here i'm also sold on diesels with mechanical injection the electronic ones just don't impress me i know they make good horsepower and drive like a gas motor but they are not field rebuildable or in most cases repairable cant replace any parts with out reprograming the computersand the new dpf motors any milage gain ts burned up when the emissions dystem pours fuel into the dpf for a regen burn also ford and dodge engineers should be castrated for sticking the engines under the dash if i wanted a van i wiuld have bought one lifting the cab and front clip off the frame for mah=jor service work is bs and the manufactures way of making you think you should throw the car away when you have a problem 30 to 50 k im wanting to drive it for 20 years not trade in every 3 years so if if i had to buy new it would likely be a chevy they still put the engine where it should be other wise i will continue to re build my older trucks till i can get no more partsbeing a mechanic i like the simplicity of the older trucks and i have been driving long enough i dont need computers to keep my truck upright or to hep me stop and my trucks are all old enough you are going to want an air bag to cushion the impact from my 89 dodge diesel with a moose catcher bumper if you should hit me

Ford .Really love the truck . Its a 2006 4x4 F250 deisel and its loaded , but its never given me any problems . 60,000 so far .

love Fords, had them for years. Owned one Dodge and it was the worst, by far, vehicel I have ever owned. I think I had 4 sets of tires on it in 46000 miles. Dodge actually told me it was normal wear and tear, they did replace the tires (3X) but would not touch it after the warranty was out. Nothing else worked on it either. Traded it for a Ford.

Andy,
What do you use your dually for? I know your day job is IT, so just being nosey on why the duallys.

I had a 1990 Ford 1 ton crew cab dually. Kewl truck. I got it when it had over 200k on it. I wanted to compare how a diesel could tow vs a gasser. It had plenty of power and could tow with ease, but it felt the toll of the steep 1/2 mile long hill I have to come up to get to my house. It's a state route and the speed limit is 55, but both the gasser and the diesel quickly slowed to in the 30's once on the hill. It was more expensive to license and it did not do well in snow (not 4x4) ...so I sold it just after I opened FF (fall 2005).

Doc, I bought my first dually to tow my 31.5' (35'road length) fifth wheel. As fate would have it, we have not done a lot of camping. We still have the camper and are now contemplating starting up again.

Anyway, we are very active in home remodeling and it frequently hauls lots of building materials. Tools and materials for road trips to work. Last fall DW and I went 280 miles one way every weekend for five weekends to rehab my mom's house enough to rent it. It hauled everything with ease. When we are on the road, there are two of us and two labs, they get the whole back seat.

Other than the trailer, the heaviest single haul was 3500# of stone for the falls in the pond that we built.

Right now my 2004 has only 4 payments left on it and only 70K. I am so comfortable in it that I really would not want to travel in anything else at this point. My last one a '99 got 22 MPG on the road which dropped to about 15 with the trailer. This one is not in that class yet, but, I know what to do to get it there.

If I bought a truck today, I would be hard pressed to decide between a new Ford and an old/restored Pinzgaur.

I have an '04 GMC that I bought new, have about 144,000 miles on it and it runs great and love it, but the reason I won't buy a new GMC is for the very reasons you said you didn't want to hear. Sorry, but the current politics is such that is the only way to show those in power that they don't have total control over the populace is not to buy the product. I feel that had the Government not stepped in and "Saved" GM and Chrysler, GM would have survived and maybe even merged with Chrysler coming back with an even better company.

But the reasons for buying a new truck are part of the American Fabric, and when the Soviet Union made cars, they were junk and people had no options.

I have had two Dodge diesel trucks and they ran well, even thought about buying a new one, but that too is off the table for now for the same reasons.

Ford makes good cars and trucks and I have no problem in buying one should the time arise, and it appears their sales are reflecting that public sentiment as mine and their stock has doubled...

The other reason I won't buy a GM or Chrysler now is if they do go out of business, the warranty is void...

I'm with big Al on this one.....

My current truck is a F250, 06, 6.0 liter diesel....

It just rolled over 100k miles, with no problems. IT has gotten about the same milage as the 92 F150 it replaced ( I still have the 92 with 300K on it) And it is twice as much truck. The 06 and 07 6 liters are the way to go, as by then most of the problems with them had been adressed. Chevy trucks don't appeal to me...Long ago they started gluing their door hinges on. My neighbor who has cattle, had to have several of his doors glued back on after a rough rides on frozen ground broke them off. We used to have Chevys, but Fords have given us very good service since then. Wish Ford still had The 4.9 liter (300 cid inline 6) in use in pickup trucks. For a 1/2 ton, it was a very good motor. They could how ever ditch the "twin I beam" front suspension, even though the newer versions are not quite as hard on tires as the older ones are.

We have other vehicles that are Chrysler products, and have had good service from them as well.

Anything but Toyota.....

Regards, Kirk

Probably the next truck will be a Ford, Strictly due to political viewpoint. But currently own four Fords, a 1967 highboy,1973 half ton , 1994 F-350 and a 1997 F-250 supercab all are 4 wheel drive. Also have 2 Dodges both are 2009 models, 3500 dually diesel and 2500 4 wheel drive gas truck used as company vehicle. The newer trucks are alot more comfortable and have the capabilitie of towing heavier loads. Where we go daily off road the Toyotas and GMC/ Chevy trucks just will not stay together. Just my own expeirience. Seems like all the pickups are somewhat equal until required to be used off road daily , then your views start to differ.

Finally found a picture of my $48,000.00 Risistol cowboy hat !!
Buy the truck hat is FREE!!??
