A little snow here overnight. High winds. temp is 3 degrees with wind chill of -18. Brrrrrr
Thankfully we do not need to leave the house today.

How are things where you are?

-5 feels like -35.
Very little snow.
Like the weather folks here are stressing, this storm system isn't about snow as much as it is dangerous wind chills/high winds.
We're expecting winds as high as 65mph.

Very little snow on the ground by us. They were taking 12". Maybe when it earns up a bit we'll get some lake effect.

Official temp is reported at -11(F), wind chill is reported at -40

Zero(F) is the predicted high temperature today is supposed to be late in the evening, between 11pm and midnight.

My weather stations were reading differing temps, I have one on the north and another on the south side of the house. One was -8(F), the other was -9(F)

Just a few inches of snow. We have very strong winds and the snow is very dry so it is hard to tell the actual depth, but I would suspect we are between 2 and 3 inches of snow. More snow to our south. More snow to our east. Less to the west and northwest.

2 feet of snow last Friday night. No power for 4 days. The snow packed into horrid lumps when I tried to move it with tractor. I've been shoveling all week ( trailer roofs, my cars, lumps in driveway )

Now, it's pouring rain and 47. It will all freeze tonight and be that way for a week so I need to go out and smooth lumps so I can get a car out.

I used to like winter but I'm WAY Over it !!!!!

Officially currently..

It was 8°F this morning. The wind was blowing about 20 to 30 mph, gusting to 50 mph. That gave a wind chill of "freekin' cold", especially for East Texas.

At least the Texas grid stood up to the test this time. After the last failure 2 years ago during "Snowmagedon", Greg Abbot fired most of the Board of ERCOT (Energy Reliability Council of Texas) who were supposed to oversee the Texas grid. There was no shortage of power this time but there were still many outages cause by limbs and trees being brought down by the wind. We lost power yesterday afternoon at 4pm and it lasted for 5 hours. It was 18°F outside at the time and dropping. It was the first real test for the back-up generator and it performed wonderfully. Every hour I'd say to myself, "That was money well spent".

I was supposed to be ringing bells for the Salvation Army this afternoon outside of Walmart. They canceled it because the high today is only supposed to be 20°F and the wind is still blowing. Too cold for all the old folks. I was ready though. I had dug out all my old -40°F, cold weather gear that I haven't worn in almost 30 years. To heck with anybody else, I was going to be toasty.

Stay warm everyone.

My Furnace hasn't stopped for two days now.
House is at 66 Degrees F

If I get any closer to the fireplace, I'll need BBQ sauce on my navel.

Mine hasn't stopped in 2 months. 🤣🤣🤣

Not the US but we're getting the brunt end of the storm that's hitting you. We haven't gotten the snow accumulation but winds are very strong creating whiteout conditions. Highways are being closed due to poor visibility.

I have 2 fireplaces. They totally suck at keeping the place warm as in the natural state of a fireplace, since 90 percent of the heat goes up the chimney.
I put wood stove inserts in both. It's zero degrees with -30 or more (worse) wind chill. The wood stoves are keeping the place toasty.

Cold front coning through in about an hour. Recorded a wind gust of 66 MPH this morning on the Davis weather station. Barometer has been dropping like a rock all day. Temps currently 52 degrees but expected to drop over 50 degrees in a few hours when the cold front passes. Power outages all day and ran the generator for a few hours only. Very surprised but happy to currently have power and fiber optic. Governor has issued a state of emergency for this evening due to the flash freeze. Rivers are high from the over 2 inches of rain and snow melt which added another 2 inches to the total.

The wood burners will be choogin' hard this weekend. The dog stays close to the pellet stove.

Real suck day weather wise up here for sure. This has been a real bad one and it ain't over yet for us.

Buffalo NY expected to get hurricane force winds and up to 6 feet of lake effect snow.

Thank God for Global Warming. Imagine how cold it would get tonite without it.

when I got up this AM the outside temp was 40'F - within an hour it had dropped to 21'F and now is 11'F
forecasters mumbling single digits . . . guy across the street has about 8" of ice build up on his drive . . . . apparently he neglected to turn off his hose, or somethin' ' ' water running down drive, covered his sidewalk in ice, fortunately running into a storm drain....

Here's a screen shot of this major storm. The motion shows it curling and almost going eastern the further north it is which means we're in the full brunt of the wind outside. Been sitting here (in pain because my back gets flared up during a storm) all day watching the trees swaying violently.

Not a lot of snow, but it is blowing.

Conditions tonight on I-65 at the Lowell, IN exit, just a couple miles east of where I live. But I'm not going out to take video so I'll post this video from the local facebook page.

The original Fireplace in my house was the standard firebox. When I moved it, yes, the box flue and chimney the whole friggin mess. I reused the old one. Big Mistake.

I installed a "Heatilator" in the lower level remodel. Heats the entire lower level with one fire log.

A good Heatilator firebox costs $2,500 -$3,500 depending on the flue and finish.

Crumpy keeps finding standard fireboxes for $1,500 -$1,700
The Hippie ridge Cabin gets a Heatilator no matter the cost.

Good wood burning appliances are crazy expensive. My Harman Pellet stove has doubled in price in 15 years. My model now costs over 5 grand to replace!!! I swallowed hard in 2008 when I dropped $2499.00 on that old girl but it was one of my smartest decisions. The best part is you can keep them running forever as they are easy to service and all one needs to know about it is on YouTube. I have kept a spare auger feed motor on hand just in case for years now and so far never needed it. It literally takes longer to get the tools rounded up to do the job than it does to do it. :yum:

Does it cost a lot more to keep feeding it pellets instead of wood? I know the pellets are made of wood so I suppose the chimney needs cleaned same as with wood. Right?

OK, been running the wood stoves for a couple days now. Nobody is up at night to keep them loaded so it was a bit chilly this morning. Just about out of wood inside and I just don't feel like bundling up and going outside to get more right now.

I have an electric furnace and heat pump for heat. A new Bosch unit I put in a couple years back. Well, I figure turning it on and letting it run on emergency heat for awhile is going to be expensive but less painful than going out for more firewood. It's still 0 degrees outside. I turned up the thermostat 1 degree above current house temp. Pleasantly surprised to hear the heat pump kick on. Heat starts coming out of the air vents and the light didn't kick on denoting the use of the inside furnace heat strips. YEA! I let it run for awhile and I was very impressed and surprised that I was getting 90+ degrees out of the air vents. That's the same temps I get when it's 40 degrees and the heat pump turns on. Kept bumping it up 1 degree at a time and so far, so good, no emergency heat.

4 Degrees (F) here and under a winter storm warning from the National Weather Service. -22(F) wind chill. Trees are swaying in the wind, wind chimes have been clanging for 3 days. So we still have a bit of a breeze out there.

Furnace is working. And it worked all night too. So we got lucky.

But now I have a fuse blown in my family room, storage room and reading nook. Not sure why, nothing is currently plugged into any of the outlets. Breaker may have gone bad? Or something else is shorting it out. I click the breaker and it immediately trips.

One thing that very high winds, combined with -10(F) degree temperatures showed me is how piss poorly some of my windows seal. Going to be looking at installing new weather stripping in a bunch of the windows as soon as the temperatures moderate a bit.

Could be a squirrel in the attic lunching on the wiring.

Weather stripping? I had none on hand but found, and consumed, an entire roll of duct tape sealing doors and windows over the last two days.

Bob,

Do you have an infrared heat gun? Something like this?

I have several scattered around the house and shop. They're great for going around the house and measuring temps, especially around windows and doors. It'll show you where all the cold air is coming in.

Oh my. Are you going to be able to peal that duct tape off without damage to finishes or leaving the gummy part of the tape behind? Not as thick but I just use painters tape.

If you have leaky doors or windows you don't plan on using over the winter, consider using a removable caulk. This is what I've used in the past.

Be advised that if you put a good seal around a door or window, you CANNOT open it until the caulk is removed. Keep that in mind in the event you need that door/window as an egress point in the event of a fire or whatever.

No wiring up there that is not inside conduit. So not squirrels.

I actually used painters tape on a couple windows and 1 door.

Fortunately BEFORE this storm was even predicted I had put new foam insulation behind a lot of my exterior wall outlet and light switch covers. I'm sure that helped with the breezes. When I built this house I used high efficiency everything; 28 years later it showing its age and needs to be updated. Took a hell of a bad storm to show me how much work I need to do.
