What are you doing today, II

They finally did it....... They ended my winning streak.

My shark costume "placed" in the last seven costume contests in a row....... until Friday night.

But the good news is... a Friend of mine showed up in my Godzilla costume that I made in 2004 and won third place. ($250.00)

......... So at least I won, vicariously. (He gave me $50.00 for being the owner of the costume).

It was a fun night, overall.Halloween 2025.webp

Mowed grass for the last time this year. Got the yard around the homestead and our empty spare lot across the street. Poisoned some ant mounds and picked up stray limbs. Will go out and winterize the mower once she cools down.

I'm, thinking about ignoring my lawn this fall. Had the mower apart twice to fix the recoil starter. Squirrels ate the rope. Every time is frustrating and I keep losing the screws. Finger just don't work when it gets cold outside.

So, Why worry about the grass?

Getting old is a bitch.

Brought in all the tenders yesterday. My house looks like a tropical garden. Banana Tree, plantation palms, a Hibiscus, a huge Sago palm, some prayer palms, and of course the Bougainvillea.
Four tomato plants all over six feet tall with fruits, Four-foot green pepper plants also with fruits, and one banana pepper. The cucumber plant and the Cantaloupe stopped fruiting, so I ditched them to compost and started anew.

An finally, a Spider plant, Aloe vera cactus, and desert palm who's name escapes me.

Now I get to water them twice a week. And hope they survive the lack of pure sunlight all winter. The green house is all glass and the back porch is a window wall but the sunlight in winter is diminished. So, I have grow-lights to substitute.

Next week, assuming Crumpy feels better, we do the Hydroponic.

Up early and felt good. Picked up several of my club fencers and we all car pooled down to Purdue for the Purdue practice. I really didn't even coach, just observed most of the time. Found out one of the fencers dressed up as "coach Bob" for his Halloween costume at the fencing party (I did not attend). But that makes 2 years in a row that someone dressed up as me for Halloween :yum:

Some parents arrived so I gave them a building tour of the athletic facility. Met up with them after the practice and they took their kids to tour the campus. One is a high school sophomore the other is a junior, so campus visits are a high priority for them. A couple other of my students met me there too, they are higher level fencers and commute up from Indianapolis to practice. They will be off to a big regional event next weekend so I tried to get them good practice partners today.

Got home just after lunch and my arthritis pain really started to kick in. Probably because I was doing woodwork on a ladder yesterday. Short nap and pain meds.

Watched the end of LOST IN SPACE (season 3, of the remake) and it was very good.

The lovely Mrs_Bob is in pain, tweaked her back yesterday, so rest today. I made some Firecracker Shrimp for dinner. It was a frozen meal that just required some simple assembly and frying.

I decided that this morning, I was going to our front family room and organizing. I never go in there as our 2 18yr old girls hang out in there all the time and leave everything laying around. The fireplace mantle had become a collection of "stuff". I had been assembling a collection of my grandfather's old memorabilia from years ago when he had a team of oxen and used to do logging back in nova Scotia. He also entered ox pulling competitions and won. I have a couple of his trophies from the 50s. My aunt passed on a couple items as well this summer so I wanted to display them.

Sucking leaves up into my outdoor vacuum, griding them into mulch for the pet Turtle to sleep under.
Appleton spends her winter in the creek bed under about 12 inches of leaves and mulch. I am over-do on getting that ready for her.

Wife has me removing widow pains, yes, pains, and cleaning

I'm just sitting here trying to figure out who is more insane . . . her? Or you for doing it?

Have you considered running away from home?

I have. But too old to run. I'll stay with her for now.
These are slider style windows. All of them. On all the floors. Lift up, pull out, clean the glass, clean the tracks, pull the screens, clean the screens, and then all back together again.
Enough for today.
Third for tomorrow

Mostly not much.

Purdue last night so I slept in this morning. Got the poolside chase lounge chairs (6) and glass tables (4) stuffed up on top of the car lift in my workshop. Of course I also pulled down about a half dozen storage bins full of Melen's belongings that need to be sorted, taken to Melen's or taken to a charity shop. But they should all GO AWAY from here.

Did some yard clean up.

Drove to HomeDepot for a 2x8 lumber. Small project for Melen's condo. Got home, cut and gathered tools. I'll head up to Chicago in the morning. Should be a 1 hour project, I'll stretch it out long enough that she needs to buy me lunch.

I have fencing this evening so leaving the house shortly.

Just got home from a quick trip up to Chiraq to help out Melen. Raised her headboard on her bed.

The lovely Mrs_Bob and and Melen thought I was going to build legs, blah blah blah. Nope. I thought simple. $11.55, including tax, 4 cheap stamped metal brackets and a 2x8 piece of lumber that I cut down, took about 15 to install. I did need help lifting it into place. Easy peasy. No need to over complicate easy things.

I have back to back fencing classes this afternoon. Youth Epee Fencing this afternoon. Beginning Saber fencing this evening. But I got home in time to have a nice 2 hour break. So I'm sipping a nice espresso and taking advantage of a little bit of free time.

Did a full brake job on a jeep Cherokee. Stripped a hex nut set screw holding one of the rotors on. Swore at it for 2 hrs with a drill and a variety of bits tapping it out. Finally got it down enough and used a big enough hammer and it came. And why the F did dodge design a brake system with reverse studs built onto the lugs? What a pain in the a$$ to line up with the rotor and hub when the stupid set screw is Stripped and no longer usable! Oh well, I kinda got voluntold to do a complete brake job on mom's partner's vehicle. He doesn't know the difference between a screwdriver and a wrench. And was planning on driving the vehicle down to Texas in a few weeks. This all started with......hey, can you swap out my winter tires this week. My son agreed to do it but lacks the skills to do a full brake job. He's learning though. We pit my brothers race car for him throughout the summer.

I gave up on their products when I needed to change a battery and it required jacking up the front end then removing the drivers side tire/wheel to access the battery compartment thru the wheel well.

Funny you should mention that. When we bought the buick last winter, the battery needed to be replaced the first week. I searched for an hour under the hood. Nope. Not there. Under the back seat.

As cars get downsized, engineers are faced with space issues, especially under the short front hoods. Plent of room under the back seats. battery under the right back seat is also a balance issue.
My son's BMW has two batteries under the rear passenger seat. Dumb and hard to jump start in a crowded parking lot.

Putting up a Starlink system. Rural internet has and is a bitch. Replaced DSL with 5G 3 years ago and thought I was in heaven. Been running 5G for almost 3years and now it’s erratic and inconsistent speeds, requires a restart after everyday update/maintenance by T-Mobile.

Also going to build up and finish the pond back wall “drive around”. Shaved the bank to lay down and build the drive.

We switched to starlink during covid due to sketchy local services that were provided. It's been good. About the only time it kicks out is when it's really windy. Guys are driving around up here with their starlink mounted in the box of their trucks as they work up north and let's face it. Go 30 minutes out of the city and there's barely any cell service aside from the highway corridors.

We had a Chevy HHR. The battery was located in the back hatch area with the temporary spare tire. Still a pain to get to, try to jump start or do service on the battery.
