What are you doing today, II

First day of the fair today. I've been running since I got up. First cooking breakfast for everyone who stayed. (Thinking 10 of us) then BBQ burgers hot dogs and smokies for all the volunteers for lunch. Same for supper. In between I was running around like mad running errands for everyone stuck at their stations for the fair. I even started a food delivery service taking orders for those who couldn't make it to the kitchen area and sending them out with delivery drivers on golf carts and sxs's throughout the fairgrounds.

It sounds like you really, REALLY, need a beer!

I spent the day mostly loafing until about 6:00 PM when I started on a mess of vines and volunteer trees saplings.
Rear corner of the yard with three of my neighbor's mail boxes mounted, has nothing but some ivy vines and gravel rocks.
Itis a 10' V 16' piece of ground with my backyard drain exit and the city water box. Both disguised by this weedy growth.

I filled the wheel barrow three times with weeds and cuttings. Now all that is left is a cover of leaves some 12"high. I'll get that Saturday with my leaf grinding vacuum. Then some brush killer spray and I am done. Hopefully for the season

We both did.

Today is day 2. It was HOT Yesterday. The type of day where my clothes were soaked and sticking to me. This morning? We have a rain shower passing through and supposed to hit temps of 23 celcius. So nicer. Gates open at 10am and the rides start at noon.
 
So....I was spotted with my guitar last night by one of the fair committee members who plays in a band and is also organizing the music. He heard one verse and chorus of one song of me playing as he was walking by. They had a performer cancel. I'm now scheduled to play side stage in front of 5000 people tonight at the fairgrounds at 7pm after I'm done cooking burgers for everyone. I guess he liked what he heard.
 
Headed to Festival of the Little Hills in old St. Charles MO.

Thousands of people visiting hundred of arts & craft vendors. Originally set for celebrating vintner's Wines but has evolved into quite a mercantile event. Crumpy likes to go to all the shops. I like to watch all the gals.

Dinner at Lewis and Clarke's high end restaurant.

A bit of rain coming down but it shouldn't last, and may cool things off a bit.

I made a hobby out of a defunct ski resort in Michigan. The guy who owned it was a friend of mine until he passed away in 2012. I put a gas engine on the old 1958 Doppelmayer T-Bar and got it running. I was the Tucker Mechanic for twenty years until Joe gave me the Tucker, after he bought us a 1977 Thiokol Packmaster 2100. As a tool-and-die Machinist, I made a lot of parts for the Tucker and the Ski Lift in the last 20/25 years.

Working in the shop to build time (and parts) to go back to the mountain.

Good times,...... good times.

It's IN!!! ........ (kind'a).

Funny story: ..... The number one reason I did this engine swap is because it needed a new clutch. I had this spare engine sitting around that had a better oil pan than the current engine, so I installed the "spare" engine with the brand new clutch and pressure plate. The funny part?..... it wasn't the clutch that was the problem!!! :mad: Whoever pulled the 318 and replaced it with this 250, (40 years ago) they put the WRONG THROWOUT BEARING in it!!! The clutch has ALWAYS been weak in this thing since my Buddy Joe bought it in 1992/1993, and it has only gotten worse with age. I had the clutch apart in 2011, had the flywheel ground, replaced a few bolts... but I didn't see anything WRONG. (I should have replaced the throw-out bearing, right then and there..... but I didn't realize).

So the throw-out bearing was an inch longer than the brand new one that came with the kit. I did a lot of research on the bearing that came out of it and yes..... totally the wrong one. The extra length made it stick into the pressure plate and reduce the active friction on the clutch-plate, making it slippy.

So....... it's in. But it will be a week before I can start it up. The starter solenoid fell apart in my hand, I need to get new belts for it, need to swap carburetors, fill oil and coolant, put the nose back on........ but it's coming.

This thing is gonna rock, this winter.

I hit the ground running at 7am after a request last night to make a run to the city for propane for the fairgrounds kitchen. The gates opened at 10am. Propane refill station opened at 9am 15 minutes away. 2 100lb Propane tanks filled and back to the fairgrounds by 9:55am.

Then I headed over to the volunteer kitchen I'm running all weekend to get the morning coffee on only to discover someone took the coffee pot. After searching the fairgrounds property for an hour I found it. Fired up the grills at noon and cooked a batch of burgers and dogs for the volunteers. Then off to perform for another hour and half. Back to the kitchen straight afterwards to cook supper for everyone. The fair is done tonight so after I was done cooking, I tore down my kitchen area. Now I'm just hiding from everyone to avoid more work. 🙂

Mark the day. August 17th. I had to turn on the furnace. It's been cold at night. As soon as the sun goes down,it cools quickly. A big area just north of us was under a frost advisory. That's why I gave up on gardening. Our growing season is too short. We get frost at night until June. Today, we are still working at the fairgrounds cleaning up. A group of us worked until dark yesterday picking up garbage and tearing stuff down. The carnival rides are all tore down. As my wife is the treasurer for the fairgrounds property, she and the president had to wait until the end last night to meet with the carnival people to sort out the financials. Let's just say that the fair was a huge success financially. They had a whole new committee organizing it last year without experience and were able to grow it and make a profit then. This year, we tripled profits. Until she gets to the bank to deposit, I slept with enough money to pay cash for a new fully loaded f150 at the foot of the bed in a locked box. Hmmmm.....

I'm tired. I have everything back home from the fairgrounds. That's 2 golf carts, our fifth wheel camper, a 6x12 enclosed cargo trailer, and our fire table. The camper is unpacked and ready for the next voyage in two weeks. I finally have a chance to stop before heading back out with my fifth wheel flat deck trailer to help move a bunch of livestock fencing.
 
We have a good rainstorm this morning, lots of lightning and thunder. Mitty and I both managed to get down to the garden to eat some fresh tomatoes off the vines, inspected the melons, decided to let the squash grow anther day or two.

I'm getting ready to go coach fencing. I'm guest coaching in Lemont, IL (west surburbs of Chicago) a couple days this week and then again next week. Monday/Wednesday. Not quite sure what to expect. But I know the session runs from 5:45 to 7:45. I'm taking a couple college kids with me. Should be back home about 9pm.

I just posted that and the guy called to meet me at the fairgrounds. I hauled most of the panels. The rest went in his horse trailer. The fifth wheel proved to be very handy and maneuverable in a tight turnaround behind his barn where we unloaded them.20250818_164456.jpg
 
I was busy all day yesterday inside the house catching up on housework. I started off steam cleaning the living room sofa and carpet then our bedroom carpet. I had 9 pkgs of buns leftover from the fairgrounds that didn't fit in any freezers so I decided to make a couple of big bread puddings for dessert to bring to a volunteer appreciation dinner tomorrow night. It's beef on a bun and potluck. So that works. (I didn't have raisins but did have strawberries and picked apples from our tree for one) Today? I had no plans and was up 2hrs in the night with a sore back. So I declared a day of rest. 20250819_130752.jpg
 
Not much for me.

Fell asleep about 10:05pm last night, woke up after 6am this morning. That is a win!

I have to get a prescription, it can't be picked up until about noon, so killing time this morning. Then I'll head north to get the meds. I get it "free" with my insurance, but only if I go to the hospital pharmacy which is about a 45 min drive. Once a month I make the 45 min drive to save $7500 in prescription costs!

I'll get an Arnie's Chicago Style Polish while I am up there. I think it is polish health food? All beef polish sausage, steamed poppy seed bun, fresh chopped onions, tomato, hot peppers, pickle spear and a dash of celery salt. I believe it is good for the veins?

Got to stop at my fencing club to pick up some gear. Also going to be going to guest coach at a club in Lemont this evening.
 
It's taken me nearly two days to recover from my last shift at work (Tuesday night).
Thank the nursing Gods for those like these two.
My lovely aides Shaylee and Erica.
I tell them all the time there is NO WAY I could do it without them.
These two run their asses off all night long until 6am in the morning.
They were the same during our really bad covid days as well.
They call me their "work Mom". 😊

I have a large pile of Peartree wood to cut in to firewood.
About three or four wheelbarrow loads of old compost to spread on the north lawn which I plan to roto till next week.
I shredded a large pile of branches yesterday and need to spread the mulch created around. Also, I need to clear a lot of the pieces off the back porch and patio.

If daylight allows, I'll do some digging in the pond restoration project. Not a big hurry on that project.
 
We had a volunteer appreciation dinner tonight for the fairgrounds. It was good. We have an upcoming Renaissance fair in October as well. I may end up volunteering/ performing on stage for it. Apparently they liked my performances last weekend. I'm already shopping for a bigger amplifier for my guitar as I'm also slated to play a Christmas party in December. Who'd of thunk that I would be good enough to do gigs on my own? I played an hour straight Saturday and 1.5hrs Sunday afternoon with 5000 people walking around the grounds.

I'm sore. Back to back coaching today. Afternoon Epee class, I was the substitute coach for the class as the normal coach is in Europe coaching a fencing clinic there. Then this evening I had a Saber class. But honestly it was the afternoon class that really kicked my butt. I was not wearing fencing shoes, which are highly padded, I just had a pair of tennis shoes on and I was doing repeated lunges and other drills with a new fencer, so basically I beat myself up and there was no reason for that. I have 2 pairs of highly padded fencing shoes at the club, I just got caught up in the moment and now I am paying for my own stupidity.

In between the afternoon and the evening classes I put on the fencing shoes, which helped, but the pain had already started. There are very specific moves we use in fencing, the fencing shoes have padding to protect you, but I was not wearing them when I needed them.
 
Picking up Kobe from school today, going to the park to play for a couple hours, then taking him to the Gary Railcats baseball game. The games are usually pretty good, minor league team, but the stadium is very nice. Fireworks display at the end of the game (assuming we stay up that late).
