Morons should go out to the mountains west of Denver. Many a truck has had their brakes catch on fire and explode out there.

Jakes help, but when 80,000 lbs goes down a steep hill anything can happen. And often does. I went down one time and lost my jakes about a quarter of the way in (sensor went bad). Needless to say it was a hell of a ride. If I hadn't ran the trailer into a snow pile at the rest area on the bottom, I probably would have lost the load from fire.

Lucky, and aware of how my equipment would handle. I have had several drums explode, often for no obvious reason. On the drive axles, this can cause a lock up and rip the tires off the rims.

So, someone wanna explain 'jake' brakes to me? I thought it was simply downshifting but obviously that is wrong. I see signs in one town around here saying no jake braking allowed. :confused: I 'thought' that was because it was noisy / downshifting and using the motor to stop the truck. :confused: No hills to speak of in that town, so why post a sign like that?

Because most truck drivers these days just like the sound it makes Doc & yes its annoying as hell . I never had a jake on none of my rigs so I have no clue how it works but I allways thought it might be something like a compresion release but no clue how that would slow them down . :unsure:
 
Jakers should only be used down hill. when neccessary. it is a loud and annoying thing, and likely the reason for the signs is a sound ordinance, Doc. there really is no need for a Jaker on a flat road.

Jake brakes are actually exhaust retarders, which cause the engine to drag, producing resistance in the drive train. This makes it faster and easier to stop a heavy vehicle without destroying brakes. If properly installed and maintained they are loud, but not exceptionally so. Ordinances banning jake or compression brakes actually place the lives of people in danger unless it is for hazard reason(avalanche or rock fall danger). Many places require compression mufflers which I agree with.
I almost never used my jakes in a city limit unless there were steep hills or entrances that posed a risk for the truck and load.
Many towns have these ordinances because of noise levels, but actually, jakes with mufflers are no louder than a motorcycle on pipes.
 
Oh, downshifting increases the resistance from the engine and also the noise level, however, a truck should never be downshifted on a downhill grade as the tranny can lock out, causing the truck to freewheel. Downshift should be done at the top of the grade.

.... many bikes and hot rodders vehicles are way louder than the jake brakes I have heard. Way to many seem to go with straight pipes or whatever it takes to make their bike / hot rod the loudest their is ...and that's not even considering the loud big bass stereos. :eek: :bonk: :bonk:
