Places to live in Texas?

We left Idaho and tried it in San Angelo for 4 yrs, decided we can put up w/ the cold better than the heat and moved back to Idaho. If you move anyplace there you'll learn a new definition of hot.

I lived in Orlando, FL for a year and a half - I know what heat and humidity are.

I've given up on getting my wife to move to Idaho or Montana. Her family is in the SE US so maybe I can get her to move down there. I'm thinking the east side would be ideal but I just don't know all the locations.

WA state is nice but it's getting more left leaning all the time.

You want to stay out of ND then five to twenty acres will set you back plenty. If you want I will sell you 317 acres or two quarters for 450K but you will have to build the house.

Honestly, if I could buy a couple of hundred acres and stick a trailer in the middle of it then I would be happy. As long as I can get decent internet service then I can live/work anywhere.

My wife on the other hand, would prefer something fancy and slightly upscale with decent shopping not too far away.

I lived between Beaumont and Orange Texas for 10 years. I lived just outside the city limits of Vidor and Rose City and Port Arther. I was close to Louisiana with in 1 hour of Lake Charles and the same to Houston. Land was fairly inexpensive there as was rent. However I've not been back since 2001 since my daughters funeral though I still have a good friend and his family live in the area.

Texas is so large that it is divided into about 7 different regions. Since you are not interested in dry or arid, I would suggest the eastern side which includes the Coastal, Hill Country, or the Piney Woods.

I'm not sure what you consider a "big city" but you easily find property/home that you have described in any of these regions within that price range.

I reside in Tyler (piney woods) this area is is easliy suited for the sportsman and offers great healthcare option as well as shopping.

But to be honest - nobody down here knows how to drive very well, cursing at the wheel will become a must for both you and your wife.
Ha!

I'm looking at the Va NC border in the mountains. 200 - 300 will buy you a couple of thousand feet of home on 10-30 acres. The small towns are very active, and larger cities are less than an hour away.

East Texas would likely suit you best. Agricultural with lots of lakes. Hilly with a few real trees and close to Dallas Fort Worth.

Mostly warm and dry, it is the only part of Texas with anything resembling seasons.

Western Arkansas is more like where you are, mountainious and green, well withing a few hours of East Texas. Look around Sherman Texas. Some land is still reasonable.

High tech jobs are plentiful and the people are super friendly.

Thanks Frank, Bilbo, and everyone. We got to Houston and drive to Mississippi and Florida every winter now so I need to find ways to detour up to Highway 20 and look around. I suspect it will take me a few years to get my plan to work. I just need to move carefully. :shifty:

My parents did the winter snowbird thing 2 yrs ago and headed to Weslaco Texas for 3 months. They loved it there. Due to medical appts they couldn't go last year. This year, they bought a park model RV in Mission. So far, they like the area there. Nice and close to the mexican border. They head across a few times a week.

Now why would you limit yourself to the USA ? We have stayed in the Cayman Islands, Roatan and this year Utilla.
Not wanting to ruffel any feathers but the US is not a great place to stay anymore. Do the search there is far cheaper and more safer places to stay...... I know this is not gonna get any reps lol except maybe from Groomer Dude.

The Hill Country is one of my favorite areas and covers a lot of ground. East Texas is Piney woods, West Texas is more flat with lots of red dirt. Big Bend around Ft. Davis is really nice too. It's a big place that's pretty diverse, if you want to snow ski you'll have to go to New Mexico or Colorado, they love Texans there.:whistling:

Ya never know. Things are crazy here in the US and I think we have a smart group of folks on FF who would not blame anyone for looking at all the options and maybe choosing to reside somewhere other than the US.

Well I've been through all 50 states and will say my 2 favorites are Kentucky and Tennessee however Tennessee is a bit expensive while Kentucky is sportsman country and some areas are really pretty inexpensive to build and live. I'm looking at a couple of places one north of Lexington and one south. The one south is more mountain and really beautiful country near the Danial Boone national park. The other is in the Shellbyville area which is flatter but 30 minutes from Louisville and much less expensive to buy land there. My gun group owns about a 100 acre there and we use part for our range.

Bismarck the capitol city is only 70 miles away and it has two huge malls plus lots of other stores.
