I think I am shutting down ...

BigAl

Gone But Not Forgotten
I cannot place the blame on any one thing but I think I am giving up on America . You all have got to know me pretty well over the last 5 years .

I have written a lot of threads about how unhappy I am with the way Amerca has been headed . I been blasted for my beliefs and had my loyalty to my Birth Country questioned more than once .

I worked hard my whole life to get to where I am today . No body gave me or my family anything . The lord has been good to me .

Its time to change . I'm 56 and if I don't do it now I may never make the break I need .

I guess it all started when I started spending time outside the U.S. 10 years ago and I saw people that had nothing , and were much happier than most folks I know in the U.S. . They did not own crap , but they shared , they laughed , and they genuinely cared about their fellow man . I found I was always happier when I was with them .

The closer my departure date to Panama and Haiti comes the happier I seem to be .

The wife asked if we could have Wirerless internet brought into the home in Panama so we would no longer need to go to the other main island to make email and calls back to the states .

I contracted with the internet company to get it set up and we will be using Skype to make calls back back to the States . I also hired another good man to be my wifes personal assistance , take her to town in the boat , carry her packages , keep the house in working order , basically a "do it all " type of house helper .
I hired a local artist to come in and paint "sea life" and "jungle" scenes on the interior walls and make the place more homey and personal .

She can spent her days working in her new Garden or flowers with the gardener and teaching English to the local school children in our little Indian school charity . I intend to spend time working on fishing, raising some chickens, work on some community fresh water projects and also donating my time to projects in other parts of the world .

If someone had told me 20 years ago that this would be my final plans for my life , I would have said they were nuts . How times have changed .

I look at it this way . I can either stay in the states and throw money away to a goverment that no longer cares about me or its citizens needs or I can leave and see if I can actully make a difference in my remaining years .

Does that mean I am leaving FF ? No , but most of my moderating and post will be from another country in the near future .

I promised the wife yesterday that when I return from Haiti we will sell or lease out Calif house , sell everything we can and move the remainer to the Idaho ranch where I have a big barn .

Idaho will only be used in the summer months as a break from Island life in Panama but that will keep the "Grown" Kids happy that we keep a place in the US .

I do not plan to die on U.S soil .

Now I am a pretty open guy and always try to welcome anyone with open arms . Lie to me once and you will never get a second chance . I take a person at their word . Contracts and signatures are for lawyers to make money from . My word is my bond and I hold people to that same level . I never needed a contract to honor my commitments . I expect the same out of People I associate with .

I guess I needed to put this down in writing to really understand that it is time for me to follow through with my beliefs . My wife is in 100% agreement with my decision . We have always made decisions together .

I'll still own 1 Kristi snowcat , bash Snot trackers every chance I get :flowers:, probably always be fat to some degree , Poke at Conservatives every once in a while and Liberals too when they get on their "soapbox" and start preaching.

I ain't looking for a lot of comment on my actions and decisions . I consider just about everyone on here a friend and most of you I have never met face to face . So here's the facts to find me if you come to Panama : My email is on file here .

Well , best of luck to You . Seems to Me that You've worked and thought hard to arrive at Your decision . If You and Your wife are at peace with this , You are ahead of a lot of folks in this world .

Good luck Al in what ever you do. I gave it some thought in '82 myself, even going as far as buying a farm in the center of Costa Rica. It just didn't work out the way I wanted. I did find out though at 63 that every thing works out for the best regardless.

CR has gotten a little pricey and I am seeing alot of folks moving down to Panama .

Yea ,I figured I better get off my dead Ass and do something .
I found that everytime the discussion of Panama comes up I was dragging some poor sucker into look at pictures and telling how much fun and love I have for it there .
It finally hit me that maybe I needed to start listening to what I was saying and take my own advice . LOL

This is not just a random thought is it? I remember you have posted or started a thread just on this before. I encourage you to do it but will miss you a lot. You have been a good friend and always will be. I hope that I can keep my promise and visit you some day. I also need to see your wife and kiss her hand for putting up with you all these years. She has to be great.

I agree with your statement about people in other countries who don't have crap and they are much happier. I go to a lot of functions that involve handicapped and mentally retarded kids who don't have crap and they are happier and have a greater outlook on life than most. Ask one of the mentally retarded once to help you, the look on their face is the best reward you will ever get.

I don't mind helping those that really need help. I don't mind working hard. I do mind seeing people come into our work place with a check from some government agency to pay their bills with a Chevy Avalanche. I do mind on the night welfare checks are handed out you see a lot of extremely nice cars in the parking lot and worst yet from out of State. It all kind of puts a wrench in your gears to get up and do what you love.

Sadly I think what we have going on here is pretty much all over the world already and we are just a bit late falling into the same trap.

Unless we vote all the people out of congress and get the message "Enough is Enough", it will be business as usual.

Bright side is if you wrote a "Manifesto", posted it one the web and took the Krusty Kritter at full throttle to the Federal Building, you couldn't get up enough steam to make the automatic door openers to work...

The Guards would be laughing so hard because they had time to read the Manifesto and realize the Kusty Kritter can't get over the curb, much less up the stairs to the front doors...

You would have to go home totally depressed, and more than likely with a parking ticket from where the curb stopped you in the no parking zone...

On the bright side, if you do this in an Arab costume, you would get federal aid, welfare and food stamps to change your life around and be a "GOOD GUY"...

Otherwise, I would just go have another beer and plan you trip to Panama and enjoy the fact they can't find you there! Which sounds like a pretty neat plan to me!

No I been giving it a lot of thought the last few years . I guess I am not the type to sit around and enjoy retirement . I see something thats needs improvement or that I can fix and my mind start working . Thats as close to retirement as I guess I will get .

This trip on the March 3rd is too start making the changes from a vacation home to a primary residence .

Now that we have made the decision it just can't come fast enough . Its been a long time since I had "Butter fly's " In my stomach .

I've been very fortunate to have traveled all over the world (at least the places I've wanted to go) and they pretty well all had the same thing in common; away from the tourists places the most asked question was "How do get to go to the United States and become an American?". I"m sorry, but I completely disagree with wanting to leave the U. S. of A.

I can find plenty of people right here in the U.S. who live on very little money and are as happy as can be. I'm not talking about he people living on welfare and government handouts, those people will always be unhappy and concerned someone else will get more than they got. I'm talking about the tens of millions right here in our own country who are damn happy with who they are, where they are, and what they are doing.

Without having been in the military, which honestly gives you a bit of a different view of other countries than as a civilian, I'm probably as well traveled as most any. With that being the case, I'm just not buying that you have to go live in a jungle with goats, chickens and such running wild as well as half naked kids begging for money and shoes. I spend almost 3 weeks going all around Central America and other than having breathtaking scenery, there was absolutely nothing that attracted me to the way of life there.

Hey, just getting there would be outstanding... I would live in a boat just paddling around, have always loved the water, here it just freezes a tad hard this time of year...

You make it to Alaska, would be happy to give you all the snow cones you could handle. Have plenty of room, but our snow supply is a bit lacking for trips out to the cabin, but we could find something to run on.

I can respect that Dargo .... Different strokes for different folks as they say .I don't have to live anywhere ... I choose to .

Al, sometimes change isn't a bad thing. Sounds like you've got it pretty much figured out. We've also been considering a change/move. Not to a different country but to a different province. It's something that I think will be a good change for our family.

I love my job right now. But everything else around here pretty much sucks. The local economy is the shits. Instead of a light at the end of the tunnel, there's only someone holding a match trying to light it in the middle of a hurricane. I love the area where I live. If you like the outdoors, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, then this is the place to be, but as for economic advantages, I feel that this whole area will be hurting for quite some time. If everything works in our favor, I will be posting from a location 30 or so miles from the north dakota border within a year or two. So I understand completely where you are coming from. Just don't forget about us on FF.

I know I,m new here Al but I,ve followed a lot of your posts & threads & have enjoyed everyone of them & wanted to comment . Thankyou for sharing , You have led an interesting life & from my take on it ( not that it matters ) You are the real deal & have my upmost respect .

Some people are takers some people are givers . You no doubt being the giver . I sure cant blame you for feeling the way you do . But even with this thread you show nothing but class . I just hope you can enjoy life to the upmost & what you enjoy doing & doing good for those that trully deserve it .

But sometimes its time to look out for yourself & whats important to you & your familly & friends without risking anything more then you allready have . You can only give so much & it would be a shame IMO to have you caught up in something that hurts you or your familly by trying to help others .

Yes I,m refering to the Haiti situation , You,ve allready put yourself through more then most people ( including Myself ) would to try to just get there to help . All due respect Some things just cant be fixed . Just my opinion & I hope you dont take it wrong . Best of luck whichever way you decide to go . Bob :respect:

Good Luck to you & your wife, Al. I wish I had the chance to come down & visit you there as I get less & less tolerant of the cold & winter here in Ohio every year. Your stories & comments here on FF have always been a high point of the site.

Take care

Tom

Thank you

Yes I agree . Haiti is like a burr under my butt . Its all I have just about thought about since the Earthquake .

You ever had the feeling that something that is happening is what you trained for your whole life ?? I feel that way about Haiti .

I don't "think" I can make a difference , I know I can . I just hope I get a chance to work with and show the people of Haiti that there is hope . Those people must be damn tough to go though what they have been though and still be able to raise their arms to God and show respect .

Now I ain't leaving FF for good ?????? Just setting up a new home base . I may be in touch a little less and out of touch a little more .

Latins take lots of Siestas and God knows I need my "Beauty Sleep" !!!

I look at it that I will be the new off shore branch office of ForumsForums for Latin American Operations .

No pay increase or new job title , but much better(cheaper) brooze and the girls wear short "grass" shirts here . Best part is I have a new "weedeater ":brows::brows:

Allen I can't say I blame you. And I think you and Dargo are on such different arcs in your lives that you guys simply can't see the other's point of view. Dargo is still fighting and looking forward to growth, you are winding down and looking forward to living as you wish. Dargo is talking to people who want the opportunities that are still only available in the USA, you are interacting with people who are happy to hitch their future onto your slow moving, easy going, quiet living lifestyle.

Congrats Allen.

You considered this before and now your mind is made up. Sounds like a good decision to me since you are not burning bridges and will still have a place in Idaho to visit and vacation at. Sounds like the best of both worlds to me.

I hope to be able to take you up on your offer of hospitality. If you hear of any good deals on another island for sale down there please let me know. :D Seems like it would be a boating paradise down there. :thumb: :D

Doc!

You need to come down and make sure that your new branch office of Latin American FF Operations is up and running according to plan .

It is a tax write off ,I believe .

Lots of good deals down here . Just do not work with the American RE agent .:yum: . They are all crooks !

The waters are quite shallow so you need to watch the draft on the boat you use . Thats why my place is called Baja Mar or the english translation of "Shallow Sea ". I have a demolished prop to prove it too .

And that is cool. I've done the same thing, but I've put down mega roots here for my large family. I've brought the best of what I've seen anywhere in the world right here at my place.

Shoot man ! If you go you can always come back! I for 1 cannot think of a better candidate for FF PANAMANIAN AMBASSADOR than you! You even like the booze! Eat lots of garlic i hear that helps with the skeeters!

I admire your decision Al. To be honest, it's a conversation my wife and I have a few times over the last 5 years. What stops us I think is that we have too many family commitments here and to be honest, on the whole, we can't think of any other country we'd rather live in. We spent our professional lives working and traveling all over the world and there are some countries that we could stay in for a few months but not as full timers. The only place that comes close is probably Australia but it is so big and I only spent 3 weeks there so I don't know if I have a real good "feel" for the place. I did love the parts of the country that I saw, I loved the Aussies and I did feel comfortable and relaxed there.

Best of luck mate. I always feel that in this life, good things happen to good people so you have a lot of happiness left to come in your life. :flowers:

Eat lots of fresh fruit and sleep in the shade! Toast your bones in the noonday sun get lots of vitamin D pay no attention to grass skirts Happy Wife Happy Life ! Get up at first light and go beachcoming on your Kaw! Shrimp Traps, crab traps, fish traps look out for Spanish Galleons! Halfnaked kids begging for money sounds like my kind of gardening! Showem how to do it then bribem Feedem then Bribem! yup

Well good luck Al.
You've done so much in your life thus far, this is just another change to ensure you'll finally feel settled and happy.

I have often wanted to move.. make that move back to a place I miss very dearly.
It's not entirely out of the question either.. been in the back of my mind since the day I left.

Good luck! :D
