Cybertruck beats Porsche 911 while towing a 911

I'm kind of curious because I get this from people all the time. Why can you not have different tools for different uses ? If I own one EV I need to sell all my ice vehicles? It seems like people who dislike Ev have the same 25 punch list items that they just keep repeating over and over. A lot of different tools for a lot of different jobs.
I agree. These are NOT mutually exclusive. Suits some uses, not others.

I had a deposit on a Fisker Ocean E-SUV and it would have easily suited my wife's driving needs. Perhaps not mine, but certainly could have done 100% of her driving needs and probably 50% of mine. If Fisker could have delivered a vehicle, to my spec, in a timely fashion, I would own an EV now.

That said, one of the LEGITIMATE HUGE OBJECTIONS to the EVs is the lack of data privacy.

The cars are rolling wi-fi enabled computers, they track every place you go, every path, for how long you stop. Musk admitted it. As did several other EV manufacturers. The gubmint push to EVs is a one step away from preventing people from using their cars as they wish to go where they want by limiting their 'social score' based on your driving habits and other things. The data privacy issue is probably my biggest gripe with EVs.

Honestly, I don't think there's any difference between an EV and a regular ice vehicle when it comes to that privacy. Vehicles nowadays are rolling computers. Heck you carry a computer as a phone all day every day. If we were ultimately worried about the privacy, we definitely would not have one of those with us.

No different than that cell phone in everyone's pocket. In fact, that cell phone takes away more privacy than a vehicle ever. Could. We carry it with us on walks, we take that with us to the bathroom. And I understand you may not but a very high percentage of the population does.

Companies have had the ability to shut down vehicles since the early to mid-90s, probably even before that in the higher tier vehicles. OnStar was the official first I believe.
I actually feel just the opposite about the EV. I'm able to manufacture my own electricity at my house. That's something that just can't be done with a gas or a diesel vehicle for an extended period of time. Yes you could run a diesel for a short time till the fry oil ran out. But unless it's an older vehicle without a computer, there's no way you're going to get it to run on wood gas.

Most ICE vehicles are "stupid" compared to the EVs. Many ICE vehicle have the same data privacy issues.

Not technically true. The 'kill switch' does not exist in most ICE vehicles as of now. It is growing. Especially in more technically advanced vehicles.

EVs are far more 'connected' than the vast majority of ICE cars.

This is not to say that ICE cars are not going to follow the footsteps of ICE vehicles.

I went to school for automotive electrical engineering in the '90s. I've got a pretty good grasp of what they can and can't do. Believe me if they want to shut them down they can very easily. And it doesn't matter the trim package.

Well they can't seem to shut down the thugs in urban areas stealing cars so I'm sticking with the published article that suggest they don't yet have the ability

Here was one article that I found really fast. In 2008 they had the ability in GM vehicles. I do know it was being developed long before 2008.

I'd say this is more of a local police working with the car manufacturers problem. And people overstepping their bounds to get things as you say done. The technology is out there and has been for a long time.

It's always interesting to see how other people's minds work. I'll let you go ahead and buy that pickup and park it in your yard and see how much money it makes you. You are exactly right. It is a tool. Without someone who knows how to use the tool, it does not make you money.
Well… Thank you very much for “letting me buy that pickup truck”! I park in the garage though. As a show of good will, I’ll let you buy your EV, park it next to the charging station you will most likely need to install, and see how much money it makes you.

You must not have a water heater, refrigerator, washer and dryer, furnace/air conditioner, cell phone or computer - all of those items lose value and don’t make you any money…

I do agree with you that a tool in the possession of one that does not know how to use it is useless…

Soon enough the government will be able to turn off your car

turn up your thermostat in the summer

turn down your thermostat in the winter

have you eat bugs instead of beef, pork or chicken

This is the reality.

This our future.

Even those of us with financial means are being squeezed into compliance. It starts with the Electric Car. It moves to the Heat Pump. And to the Tankless Water Heater. And the Smart Thermostat. . . . . . . .

I suppose all of this clearly shows how very much you must hate Elon Musk, lumping him in as you have with all the rest.
Yet quite possibly he is doing the most of anyone to stop our future as you see it.
Were you drinking before you posted?
Kind of appears that you might have been.

I like your comment but I don't like what the companies are doing with everything the electronic these days. I have an unsecured Wi-Fi connection at my house that is fairly locked down off my main system for when people visit. I had been noticing that something was hooked to it and could not figure it out. Until I killed the power to my house. Slowly turned on the breakers until the item connected. It was guess what a KitchenAid blender. Why in the hell does a KitchenAid blender need a Wi-Fi connection.... Needless to say that MAC address has been blocked.

My dishwasher has a wi-fi connection. For the life of me I have no clue why!

Not to get too far into the weeds in this thread (a good discussion is where you find it), but where do you all stand on the Amazon/Alexa voice control systems? I am personally amazed at how many people I know that willingly put these things in their homes. And yes, I know that your phone may be listening to you at all times, but these things aren’t even hiding the ball, so to speak.

I have Amazon/Alexa devices and fully realize they are "listening" to everything in my home. Before doing so I actually looked at multiple ways to automate my home, and the loss of privacy that comes with that. What bothers me more about the electric cars collecting data is that ALL of them, Musk included, sell that data for marketing purposes. Alexa/Amazon devices are connected but the data is not sold for marketing purposes, not saying it is not used by Amazon for their own marketing, but saying they are not selling it to spammers.

Wouldn't touch an Alexa or similar device.
When I want to have a private discussion, it always starts with "Where's your phone?". We then take our phones into a different room before our discussion.

Ditto. Alexa is not welcome in my home.
I have not gone that far BC but that is a good idea. I never considered doing that.

. . . . actually they are not being forced on the public.
the current administration making all other options unavailable - by implementing "regulations" in the name of climate name, etc.

subtle difference, but same result.

I'm certain the phones are listening. One time I said the word "reciprocity" when in the truck. Within minutes, my wife's phone had all kinds of stuff on the laws.

I love these drifting threads. The collective bunch of folks represented here are giant smarter than the average meta addicted audience member. I have met many of you in the past decades. face to face regardless of views we are a super above average bunch of people.
I managed and operated and directed an ev program at my employer for a cooperative utility provider of water and electrical services provider in my region of WI. the scope of our grant ran its course and the project was scraped in 2019. what we learned in 20 years of collecting data is a book onto itself. I am not the person to articulate 20 years of successes and failures in a threaded conversation.

the discussion of technology is one thread.
the discussion of efficiency is another.
On Star can and always has been enabled to reduce a vehicle to limp mode. ( thread about personal rights and privilege here)

the basis for selection of which technology you use to accomplish a task is freedom. I am free to choose the process and application of *MY* various tools and the selection of these tools is based on my knowledge skill and ability.

I had a great conversation this summer in Wyoming with an sheriff who is a snow cat enthusiast. he stated that haul trucks at a mine in his region were making electricity. they diesel electric'd up the shelf road. trucks were loaded with material and then on the down hill return the dynamic braking charged the batteries, ( capacitors in his case ) then on the next run up the haul road the empty truck used 100% emission free energy to get up the hill. if you believe this (STOP) go back to basics. In high school the k-12 curriculum regardless of who presented it told you energy can not be created only changed. the more times you change the energy the more loss and inefficiency you have in the process. ( is said stop) Hear me out. If you feel the process can work if you ran the truck up and down empty both ways, you lose me. the reason you lose me is simple, you will never weigh more than the food you eat. electric heat is the same argument. If you feel its more efficient to convert energy multiple times and some how have a net gain you need to study harder.

these couple statements got me to type and toss pebbles into the stream of knowledge flowing here.

I'm able to manufacture my own electricity at my house. ( by converting silica and germanium to Dc electric ( pv), spinning magnets and loops of wire, By geothermal, nuclear, hydro, or wind? Piezo electric?, static? thermocouple? Chemical?) Just converting energy has loss please account for it.

That's something that just can't be done with a gas or a diesel vehicle for an extended period of time. USA produces a lot of biomass that can be converted. whether you cook it through a still or let it rot for a few myriennium ( i had to google that) it can be done with loss. Please account for it.

Yes you could run a diesel for a short time till the fry oil ran out. ( redundant see above)

But unless it's an older vehicle without a computer, there's no way you're going to get it to run on wood gas. Any one who pays attention to my rants knows I have no use for aftermarket electronics as an answer to ignitions on old equipment. I carry a points version distributor for every vehicle i have that can accept a distributor. If it cant I am prepared to drill a hole and put a inductive prox on a pin in a flywheel at Top dead center. then use another that looks at the teeth on the fly wheel to find a spot to fire a simple coil pack at the right time. sucking wood gas into the intake is simple enough.

Teslas are quickly passing prius' as the most affordable newest used cars. Go onto any commercial insurance sales site and search. they are loaded with cheap teslas and prius automobiles each and everyone of them needing service that exceeds value. What is the point? this is Exactly the findings of our project. our solectria force, 3 phase AC with regenerative braking test bed had three different battery technologies vetted on its chassis. it was better each time. and the human element was the demise each segment of the testing. if you are going to pontificate about how some how the three phase ac electric motor has improved since Henery fords wife drove a car that was charged by one........ Just stop.

electric propulsion is a tool that has its place. It is not saving anything measurable at any point of its use. it is just transfering the loss to somewhere you can't see or smell it.

I submit this final drivel about alexa,,,,,,,

there was a gentlemen by the name of yul kwon Ph.D Here authored a glorious report on the status of the US energy infrastructure.

Try to find it!

Our modern electric power grid has been called the biggest and most complex machine in the world – delivering electricity over 200,000 miles of high tension transmission lines. In this third episode of America Revealed, host Yul Kwon travels around the country to understand its intricacies, its vulnerabilities, and the remarkable ingenuity required to keep the electricity on every day of the year.

Seriously Try to find this project and its thesis.

Nicely done sir!
