Gone But Not Forgotten
Worked on SIL's computer this afternoon and when I got home I got the usual greeting from my blue and gold macaw. About an hour later I was at the computer about 6 ft. from his cage and I heard him flap his wings and turned and he had both wings spread out and then just flopped off his perch to the bottom of his cage. He was still alive for a few minutes as the wife picked him up in a towel we use when we trim their nails. 2-3 minutes later he passed. Don't know if he had a heart attack or stroke but he is gone now. He is the one on my shoulder in this pic. Sad day for sure.:sad:

My mother in law had one that lasted close to 45 years before it died. The do live a long time. I know how it feels to loose a pet, I've sure lost a number in my years.
 
Damn Bill really sad for you ..................... I have 2 B&G's, don't know what I'd do!

We have no idea. It can't be the food as 4 other ones are eating it and that bag we have been using for over a week. We don't buy cheap food either.Didn't cook anything as teflon is deadly for birds if you scorch a teflon pan. She is talking with some other bird folks this evening. I fired up the backhoe and added him to the pet cemetery right down from my own burial mound. I will be watching over them when my time comes.

It will be strange as I used to get all 3 macaws yacking and laughing at the same time. You would think it was a bunch of drunks telling jokes. Max was super attached to me and would holler out the window when I was mowing the yard or in the pool. Going to different with him gone. He would watch the turkeys come up to the feeder and yell at them all the time. He was the front yard watchdog.
 
Mule....Mom said to have your heating system checked for C/o2.....she said that carbon monoxide will get a bird real fast.......she lost some of her pets the vet said that was what caused it.....got it fixed and had no more problem......Just a thought to consider........sorry for your loss....Jerry
 
My heat is hot water through a coil in the air handler from the outside wood boiler and radiant tubing in the basement floor. The air vent is between his cage and the military macaw's cage.
 
Will be one less voice going hello when somebody comes in the door or the phone rings. The African grey in my bedroom imitates the phone ringing and these guys would answer him. He liked when I called in my coumadin test since I put the phone on speaker and he could hear the other half of the conversation even if it was a recording. Guess I will disassemble his big cage and move it to the barn tomorrow. Will seem empty in the living room with it gone.

He was 6 years old. We got him as a rescue and he had been badly underfed as a young bird. The idiots did not like the mess so they barely fed him. He was about 1 1/2 years old when we got him. He is about 3 in that pic.

malnutrition at a young age has shortened many a pets long life, my wife had rescued a German Shepperd that was abused, his internals never quite developed right and he only lived to 4 years old. again sorry for your loss:flowers:
 
Sorry to hear about your loss Muley. I haven't had a bird since I was a kid but I know how attached people become to them. Condolences. :sad:
 
My Condolences Muley. :( Sorry for your loss. I've lost pets before, but the worst was when it happened totally out of the blue. Kinda smacks you up side the head. You gave him a great home for 4+ years of his life. Sure sounds like he was very happy there. So sad. :flowers:
 
Sorry to hear of your loss Bill. He may have only had 4 years with you but it sounds like they were 4 wonderful years.
 
Well it gets worse! This morning the little Senegal parrot was dead as well. And we found the culprit. Wife had sent for an antique porcelain coffee pot to use to heat water for tea. It is a big pot and apparently trapped enough heat to melt the plastic burner bibs we use on the stove. They must give off toxic fumes. I had told her I smelled something when I got home and after a quick check on the freezers did not think anything more of it. This morning when we found Petey dead we went and removed all the food dishes as that was the first thing that was common to all our birds. The 2 macaws that are still alive were in far corners with doors near them so they apparently did not get a fatal dose of the fumes. We hope so!!! When we checked the pot on the stove we found the melted burner bib. Tough lesson to learn. We had Petey for 18 years. Sad, sad day around here.
 
Bill that is just devastating,sadly toxic fumes are not easily detected so in no way blame yourselves,accidents happen.

Rest in peace much loved pets.
 
So sorry to hear this Bill. One was hard enough but two. I can't imagine. Hang in there buddy. At least you found the culprit. :thumb:
 
Please get the message out to friends with birds. While we knew about the dangers of teflon pans we never gave a thought to the these stove liners and they are very popular. This was our second set and never an issue till the big pot trapped enough heat to melt the one. I sure am tired of burying pets this year. The old cat who passed this summer was expected but I truly expected Max to outlive me. House is awful quiet today.
 
They are just a sheet of whatever they are made of. You take a scissors and cut out an opening around the burner and they catch any spills etc. Then you can lift them out and wash them. Here is a pic of one of them.

Thanks Muley. We have a glass top in the kitchen so I never heard of those. I will keep it in mind (to not use them) on the outdoor cookers to catch tomato splashes when canning.
 
I am not sure what the proper name is for them. For years they were made of aluminum foil and never an issue.:hammer:
