Why have people stopped using forums in recent years? Have they just lost popularity or what? It might just be me, but I have always loved forums, and I'm surprised it took me so long to find this place. I just wanna know why you guys think they've slowly died off in recent years.
the demise of 'forums' does not have a simple answer.
I sysop'ed on a CompuServe forum that grew to 600+ messages per day, with ~2,000 people logging in daily.
CompuServe failed, got sold. but that forum still exists today - the last message was posted in April, 2021.
people participated in forums, you needed a computer, a modem, and a portal.
when did computers become uber widespread in homes?
mid 80's I got my first computer - I waited for the IBM PS/2 line, as that was supposed to bring costs down.
PS/2 with 60GB hard drive, VGA monitor, Epson 14" dot matrix printer. set me back about $8,000.
1.14MB floppies were $10 _each_ and I was the only one on the street that had a home computer.
that scene was changed when Michael Dell ate IBM for lunch. suddenly a whole raft of clones came to market at price points people could afford. about that time 'ISP providers' multiplied - suddenly everyone was on the internet.
those users were mid-20's to mid-30's - and that was 30 years ago - they are now in their 50's - 60's,,, and up.
the next generation - like my kids - grew up using computers.
but, the following generation grew up with a silver smart phone in their mouth, err,,,, hands....
as the OP experienced, exploring the web on a smart phone is like super very tedious.
which made 'one line' apps like Twitter and Facebook more attractive. kids can get to the very specific places 'they like' and everything they've opted into gets stuffed in front of their face "automatically"
Forums require a bit of thought, the popular apps - no thought/effort.
anyone who does email or other with a smart phone has learned the joys of virtual keyboards....
altho I must say, I've observed people thumb typing at astonishing speeds.
now - hints of the future for the observing . . . .
what is the trend in smart phones?
the trend is: BIGGER!
the larger smart phone are roughly 1/2 the size of an iPad/Go tablet.
two inch screens worked for phone calls, not so much for watching movies.
eventually the smart phone will grow into a computer.
and the circle will be complete.
