Olympics - What country is in the lead?

How do you determine what country is in the lead as it relates to medals?

Most places I see it listed is counting only by number of medals.

I, and some others count it differently.
Gold = 3 points
Silver = 2 points
Bronze = 1 point

As it stands right now, the top 2 each have 79 medals.
China (G, S, B) = 45 14 20
USA (G, S, B) = 26, 26, 27

The way I figure it, China is way ahead and has 183 points and the USA has 157.

I've seen that type of scoring for the NCAA tourney results so that each correct pick is worth more as the tourney progresses. Never seen it used for the Olympics .... and since it would put is behind (WAY Behind) I prefer to use the total medal count as the yardstick. :D

Any predictions over who will win the total medal count? I'll go with the USA. I doubt anyone could catch China if figuring it BC's way.

Olympics - What country has the lead?
Does anyone really care now that swimming is over?

Having lunch today "Handball" was on. LaCrosse without weapons, soccer with your hands, WTF is this cr@p? I also heard that trampoline jumping is an Olympic sport now, too.

Buncha BS. (Kinda like the bucket-ball baffoonery that is going on.) Although the China/US baseball game woulda been interesting to watch for the violence.

just because it's hard doesn't make it a world class sport.
skateboarding is just as hard, it's been around longer, and takes as much gymnastic ability - and it's not an olympic sport.

they do ice skating at the winter olympics, why haven't roller blades been added to the summer ones? or even better, roller derby - you can combine several different skill sets into that one!

And the outfits... :brows:

oh, yeah - in answer to your question, I haven't tried snow boarding at a ski slope, but I've messed with it on local "hillside powder" once or twice. I've also tried the downhill "pole" course at Winter Park, too. (time trials -- did really bad)

how about competitive cheerleading?
you could do the "difficulty multiplier" just like gymnastics & figure skating, and add in another one for % of body not covered by costume while deducting points for wardrobe malfunctions - unless they're synchronized... :brows:

Beach volleyball is awesome. The US womens teams if phenomenal to watch. The saves they do are unbelievable.
Who's to define what is and is not a sport? Someone did a lot of work to get any sport introduced into the Olympics. Whether or not the general public will watch it and give a darn about it is another matter all together.
BMX bike racing is new this year. It's big in the US but will other countries jump on board? Point is no one likes or cares about all the events, but there is enough variety that there should be something for everyone to enjoy.

I too will go with the USA.

Oh, going with my way, it's really close right now.
USA is only down by 3 points (187 to 190).

Total medals right now is USA 95, China 83.
