New Orleans Evacuation Order

FOX News just reported that Mayor Ray Nagin just announced that at 8am this morning there will be a mandatory evacuation announcement of the city of New Orleans. There will be no city shelter program (which led to the destruction of the Superdome during Katrina) when Gustav lands. If people say in New Orleans they will be defying a 'mandatory' evacuation order and will stay at their own risk.

I wonder how many will stay?

By Gustav is not scheduled to make landfall for a few more days, so at least this time they are starting early.

I am watching the news on NBC. I thought it was only volunteer evacuation right now. They have 700 buses lined up to take people out but Mandatory was coming later today. You would think after what happened the last time it would have been just mandatory??

Fox said evacuation orders. I took it to mean mandantory. At least one guy learns from his mistakes.

Actually I'd think of moving the whole damn city to higher ground, but that makes sense so no politician would consider it

I think MORE will stay this time so they get another trailer and gobs of money from the govt. The ones that stayed last time made out like bandits. In fact, most became bandits if they weren't bandits previously.

I thought the majority of the welfare population in NO had moved elsewhere. Hopefully there is a more responsible population this time that will help themselves and others rather than waiting on government assistance.
But this reminds of of Katrina. The same type of evacuation order was given then. Most ignored it, and the police state forced some to leave etc.

I can't help but think that some of those people will be adhering to the thought that "lightning doesn't strike twice."
Me, I'd be heading for the hills, NOW.

The ones that don’t evacuate will just blame Bush. I would be a little nervous if I stood in my front lawn and saw water on three sides that was higher than my house.
Why are they still trying to keep New Orleans a city? I would donate a five gallon pail of dirt if they gave me a address to ship it to. If everyone did that, they could look down at the water.
Just my two cents worth.

That is fricking brilliant! It actually makes sense too!

Do you head up FEMA or maybe the Army Corps of Engineers? Oh wait, its brilliant and makes sense, no way you could be a government bureaucrat! :ermm:

No,
I'm an old retired guy. (telephone company).
Thanks,

From CNN:
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday but urged residents to flee now.
I believe that it is mandatory starting tomorrow.

Chillicothe is where member jwstewar lives. But the hills around Doc are even bigger. Go a little North of him and they get even bigger.

Back on topic:
Well, they're saying this is a cat 4-5 storm, the real deal and a killer heading towards the gulf.
I was watching a bit of news footage from earlier.
The people on the buses had no idea where they were being taken?
One woman was even griping about there not being shelters set up for them in NO.

Who would want to take their chances, staying there after the devastation of Katrina?

McCains, Palin going to region threatened by storm

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Likely GOP presidential nominee John McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, are traveling to Mississippi to check on people getting prepared for Hurricane Gustav.
McKain aides say McCain and his wife Cindy will join Palin in traveling to Jackson, Miss., Sunday at the invitation of Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour. They said the McCains and Palins want to check on preparations because they are concerned about the people threatened by the storm, which is heading through the Gulf of Mexico and threatening the same area ravaged by Hurricane Katrina three years ago. The storm could hit the coast as early as Monday afternoon.
They will receive a briefing at the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency - a permanent operations center monitoring hurricane response.

Excellent move, don't you think?
;)

We've had to really 'fough it' this since last Thursday we've been without TV (cable is out on our houseboat). So all I know of this storm, and McCain & Palin have come from right here on Foriums Forums.
The McCain move sure sounds political. I can't imagine what good a candidae could do down there at this point.
What about the RNC, what are they doing about that? Has a backup location been established?
When is the hurricane supposed to hit land?
I can already imagine the price of gas jumping up again.

Republicans are worried about holding their national convention during the storm.
If the storm's landfall is serious, McCain said he probably would rethink allowing the four-day political gathering to continue.
"It just wouldn't be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster," McCain said in an interview taped Saturday with "Fox News Sunday." "So we're monitoring it from day to day, and I'm saying a few prayers, too."

President Bush was criticized after Katrina struck in August 2005 because he stuck to a schedule that took him from his ranch in Texas on a two-day trip to Arizona and California. There, he promoted a Medicare proposal while making just scant references to Katrina even as it slammed the Gulf Coast. Bush even happily strummed a guitar backstage at one event. He did not return to Washington until two days after the storm and did not visit the region until five days after.
The Bush White House was badly burned by its fumbling response after Katrina. Bush's image as a strong leader has never entirely rebounded, even though he has labored to improve on the Katrina performance.

Gustav-
The further out in time we go, the path of Gustav is harder to predict. The storm will hit the gulf late on Saturday. The southerly track has pushed the projected path to the west of New Orleans. Although the storm is expected to hit Louisiana, it could hit Texas, Louisiana or the Panhandle of Florida.
After the storm passes Cuba it is expected to pick up steam again. It will be in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico through Sunday and by Monday morning the forecasters will have a better grasp of where it will hit land. The center of the storm is expected to strike land by 8 pm Tuesday and possibly late Monday night.

I don't think the location is a big issue. It's in Minneapolis/St. Paul. It'll take a few days to get any kind of weather that far North of the Gulf.
Last I heard they were looking at Monday PM for landfall.

If you will remember there was a spike in crime in Houston from the number of evacuees that went there in the wake of Katrina. I am seeing requests come across my desk asking for law enforcement at the shelters here in Alabama. At least we are being proactive.

Brents, it seems to me that the shelters that accept the people might want to do criminal background and outstanding warrant checks on anyone who comes there and causes any sort of disturbance. Perhaps the trouble makers would feel more comfortable in a maximum security 'shelter' compliments of the State of Alabama.

Just on the NBC news, Gustav is coming earlier than expected and there is a lot of people that refuse to go!! Yeah refuse to go!!
