Murphs post about Net Flix shipping issues reminded me of a poll question I had been meaning to ask.

Net Flix (or any DVD via mail provider) or HBO, Showtime,Starz?

Which is the better buy? Do many of you use both?

Re: Net Flix or HBO / Showtime?

Thanks Murph!!! :tiphat: :D

PG, I can't think of a spell checker name that starts with T.

I have HBO & Showtime and more. I rarely watch them. Like PG if I'm in the mood for a movie, or looking for something to record for later viewing I find most times AMC, TCM or FMC have something decent playing ...and many times it is a classic.

Re: Net Flix or HBO / Showtime?

We disconnected out Direct TV Dish about 3 years ago. So all I have available is NBC and Fox. I am thinking of signing up for the 2 movie per month special from Netflix. We don't watch much TV but during the winter it might not be too bad as it is just as cheap if not cheaper than to drive into town and get a movie, watch it, and then take back.

Re: Net Flix or HBO / Showtime?

We have Satellite which is a splurge for us. If it were up to Redneck we would still be on a broken antenna.
We don't rent because of forgetting to get them back on time, and the few times in the past when I rented I didn't have the time to watch it.

Re: Net Flix or HBO / Showtime?

We have a membership at the local "Family Video" store. We rarely rent movies there, they cost $3 for current movies. The local supermarket has a "Redbox" video vending machine, they only cost $1 per night from the machine. When we rent a movie it is very likely from the "Redbox" machine.

Our satellite TV service is DishNetwork and we don't have any of the subscription movie channels (HBO, Showtime, Encore, Starz, etc). We do have the High Definition packages and I am actually thinking of scaling back a bit on our subscription because we get a lot of channels we simply never watch.

Our McDonald's has one of those at the back exit/entrance.

It is rarely convenient for us to return movies so we never rent. I don't even have a membership anywhere anymore. But on the rare occasion we have time for a movie looking over HBO/Showtime/Starz & Encore offerings makes me yawn. There is rarely anything playing when we want to watch.

So the advantage to Netflix is there is no time limit. You would never have to return a movie before you've watched it since there is no time limit. They mail it to you and give you a return mailer so all you do is watch it and then put it in the mail. Very easy. And you can have 3 movies at any given time. You submit a lits of movies you are interested in seeing. As you return movies they'll send you another one off the your list. Sounds interesting. So I'm considering dropping the premium channels and trying out Netflix ....probably later this fall, after boating season. So I'm hoping for feedback from others using NetFlix.

Re: Net Flix or HBO / Showtime?

My wife gets movies at the Library. They have a pretty good selection of VHS tapes now that everyone has dumped their VCR's.

Price is right and the loan time is something like a week on VHS tapes. I think DVD's are only a 1 or 2 day rental.

Re: Net Flix or HBO / Showtime?

I would suggest one more option to the poll. PPV on cable or dish. We have dishnetwork WITH Showtime. We have the Showtime mainly for Big Brother and some other programs we like. (Weed's, Secret Diary of a Call Girl etc) We rent MAYBE 2 movies a year from Blockbuster. We watch probably one movie a week on PPV with dishnetwork. We have not watched many at all this summer, but that's normal. Late fall and winter are heavy movie months for us.

Bob, we have too many channels too, but if we scale back we give up some of the important ones. We just keep what we got.

Re: Net Flix or HBO / Showtime?

Good thought rback. I added the PPV option.

Do you have some sort of "On Demand" function? With our cable provider, we can get most premium channel movies anytime we want. You just go to the listing of movies and pick one. You can start/stop/FF... whenever you want but unlike a PVR, it's keeping track of where the movie is at the provider so you have 24 hours from starting the movie to finish it. Although I don't use our PPV, the same function works there.

I'm have cable with all the premium channels. I've looked into switching to NetFlix or similar but found the solution I have to be so simple, offer so many options... that I can't beat it. I talked to the cable company about changing service (dropping some premium services) but they show me where I'm grandfathered into an old plan that gives me Starz (& Encore), Showtime, Cinemax... for $5 each per month. If I dropped one or all of them, and changed my mind, I'd be paying a lot more than $5 each.

Re: Net Flix or HBO / Showtime?

We tied HBO etc. Blockbusters, Netflix.
HBO - to many repeats
Blockbusters - good slections, but time limits
Netflix - no time limits, slections ??
For us Netflix works alright, not prefect, but nothing is.

That sounds like a pretty sweet deal you are grandfathered into BC. :thumb:

Yes, I do have PPV, and I have the DVR (Tivo) service. So I used to be able to record PPV and watch it multiple times (wife and I watch it, Son later watches etc...) but they recently changed that so that you can still record the PPV but it only will have a 24 hour lifespan. Then they delete it from the DVR. I stopped using PPV after that (not that I used it that much come to think of it). But PPV does seem like the most cost effective option in that you don't have a monthly fee involved. Just watch what you want to watch. Most months it's nothing but once in a while it would be two flicks a month. Still cheaper than the premium channels or NetFlix.

I added PPV to the title and as a poll option. I didn't think of it when I did the original post.
