I had a cam lobe go flat last year on a dodge 360, the valley and pan looked a lot like that.

Your pan of cuttings, was that from the toasted turbo changed way back at the start of the thread? Hope its not deeper.

………. well gang,... i'm not sure yet . all good possibilities. I haven't dug far enough into it yet, but that's my first project of the day . some of the ''displaced'' metals definitely could be from the turbo. the first four cam lobes looked pretty good, couldn't see the rear ones, due that oil pump was in the way. the thrust brg. could be a culprit . although usually more common on a manual tranny application, rather than an auto. this was a running unit , pulled out of the truck by the seller. he had a video of it running . sounded fine . etc. so we went with it . helps to have x-ray vision when buying . will know more today,...….

……… well, the ''good '' wasn't in attendance today,...the ''bad & ugly'' showed up for roll-call,... found the main sources of the ''copper'' in the pan,... rod brgs. worn into the ''backings''. rod inserts #3 had spun. the other three weren't far behind. glad I hadn't tried to start it pre-maturely. bad news; we're at a crossroad … so I separated the 4bd from the Jayco,...

Is the crank salvageable?

Look at the bright side. Easier to fix now than after it had thrown a rod out of the block on some deserted snowed in road.

…….PJL,.. you're 100% correct about that. yes just a bummer to have to go deeper than a set of inserts, … or a different heart transplant. yes, crank is STD. so it can be turned. not a lot of discoloring . one new rod . O/S inserts , etc... video was misleading for sure.....

That's a rough break, as was said better than through the side. Great motors , parts are a little steep, like all Jap stuff ,but they can rack up the miles. Is there enough hardness in that crank to turn ? , worst case maybe you can find another in std .

.... o.k.,.. so after talking with Sandy,.. game plan is to rebuild what we have ...as long as its salvageable. there is three o.s. brg. inserts avail. so first step is to send crank out to my go to guy 'jerry'' ,.. and get it inspected. same with cyl. head. so I disassembled & removed the cyl. head assy. getting back to the ''turbo'' question, I;m pretty sure that was the culprit. mainly due to the fact that it is the coolant /cooled type. which is usually more common on the higher H.P. engines, but this one may be more due to the compact /heat environment application. but, anyhow... the old turbo was so destroyed , that the coolant and oil were compromised... and it all ended up in the oil pan. well , we all know that a cup of anti-freeze can ruin all the brgs. in an engine , in a very short amount of time. as well as a concrete floor. .... as so the overhaul begins.....

........ 85 and sunny today ,... 85 % humidity .... awesome day,... prepping / fab'n adapter to mount Isuzu.... remove one 3.9L... to mount another...

...... finished the engine mounting adapter, I like to attach two different plates ( identified with the m&m , welded into plate), with an extension between the two,... for multi applications /compaction . ( OTC & Kent-moore< etc. make o.e.m plates). brgs. showed up a day ago. slid trans. into place , to hoist back into chassis....

...... mounted the Isuzu to the ''rotator''.,... disassembled & inspected..... yeah...we didn't get the motor that was in the video the guy sent us . this thing is shot; pistons, sleeves, camshaft, brgs. ( from the coolant from the turbo failure), lifters/tappets, oil cooler, injection pump,. etc.... theres no way this thing ran in the video and didn't smoke or ''knock''.... so much for the usual ''brg. roll-in '' ,... and run it....

Its terrible but unless you know them, and even then it can go bad you can't trust people anymore to be honest. I went through the same thing last year on a dodge magnum. Luckily I paid with a credit card, it was a business and got my money back, but not before having to get pissed off. The new policy is just plan on building it. I feel you pain.

……. yes, very true. 9 times out of 10,... it's not an issue,... normally one of us would physically go throw an eyeball on it. but all of us at the time were tied up. so rolled the dice,..hit craps unfortunately . so we're weighing out the options.... it's been quite awhile to be in this predicament . private sale ''as-is'' , so no luck there. but moving forward,... hope this helps other people in the future. progress is going on,...

....so , back to biz,... hoisted the trans. back into place, filter & gasket arrived. onto the area that all snocat owners & wrenches love the most.... suspension ,.... found 4 bogie wheels on L/F & 2 on R/F , that would barely spin, so far.... let the fun begin....

..... yes,.... . disassembly of the front trunnion ,..... drained the diff.,... not sure what was in there.... smelt like GL-5,...looked like ATF,...LOTS OF SLUDGE....

Are those carriage bolts holding the wear plate (? terminology) to the table?? I didn't think mine even had that because of excessive wear behind that area until I got all of the crud off, but at least they used giant flat heads . . .

And I assume yours also had shimming washers from the picture?

……. yours has the original hardware,... someone welded the head of screws onto wearplate…. slots were probably stripped out.... yes on the shim washers. the common ''wear'' marks behind roller, where trunnion interference with 5th wheel occurred,... most likely from a worn bushing,... pivot shaft bushing in 5th wheel bore is sloppy,... time for a custom made replacement.....
