I want a Kayak . . . I dunno why . . . who has one?

We have a creek behind the house and I've always wanted to kayak down the creek. I'm pretty sure it goes for miles and eventually drains into a fairly large river (Kankakee river).

We go to Florida frequently and rent kayaks to explore the swamps and waters. I really have zero practical use. Probably have minimal recreational use too. I just want one. Have wanted one for years.

So who has a kayak and do you actually use it? Where do you go, what do you do?

Are you looking for a true kayak that you're strapped into (for lack of the technical term) or a kayak style boat you sit on top of?
 
A kayak is a few hundred bucks. I say go for it, even if you only use it once.

Get two, you may find that someone would like to go with you.

A SOT is probably the safest for a newbie, especially if you plan to kayak alone. I looked at a SOT for fishing, then ended up with a 15' canoe instead. it just made more sense for me and my style of fishing. I also have an inflatable float tube that gets lots more use than the canoe. I can use it in rivers and small lakes with swim fins for propulsion. I rigged it to hold a small lunch size cooler behind the seat, and made a rod holder for my fly rod. Here's my tube and friend in her tube on Wakely Lake in Michigan in 2009. FWIW, she outfished me that day with that bass she's holding. She and her hubby fish about 150-200 days each year, and they live in Ontario.

There are two basic types of kayak. River and ocean. River kayaks are the type where you sit INSIDE the boat and there is a waterskirt that ties around you, they are small single seat and very manuverable. Ocean kayaks are the type you sit ON TOP and are typically more stable, sink proof, etc. and can be had in single or double seat configurations.

I would prefer the ocean style kayak, when we rent kayaks that is what is typically offered, they are pretty much idiot proof.
 
What about a canoe?

I done some white water in them with out any problems it was a short 10-12ft one, I used it because I couldn't find a river kayak and skirt in 3XL:w00t2:

We are headed to the outer banks of NC in a few weeks have you ever used an ocean one in surf?
I am thinking of trying it if I can get my but in one.

Ocean kayaks are longer and have a rudder. A sit-on-top is a seperate group.

I have 4 river/lake kayaks. Don't use them a lot but they were cheap. If I did much recreating, it would be first on my list. I've used mine on the Mississippi R in Minnesota and on 6 foot wide creeks thru the woods.
 
I used to launch my bass boat on the kankakee at the indianna/illinois boarder and run about 5 miles into indianna then start fishing the back waters. You would have a blast with a kayak there. Of course the kank is only a big drainage ditch there

Sorry to roll with the slight derailing here... but freestyle canoeing? Are you kidding? That is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. I gotta go... I need pre-dug post holes from Home Depot...
 
all kyaks i'm familiar with are ocean going used by the natives in my aerathey are wood frames with a outer skin mde from marine mammel skins and intestines and yes you are sealed in with a skirt the whole family can crawl in to them and ride with you nice and dry.you don't see them much any more as the natives like aluminum boats and out boards
