When I worked with the handicapped many years ago, we worked in 3/4 bedroom homes with handicapped individuals. Well, there were 63 employees in total for 7 houses. I used to start rumors about myself just to see how far it would spread. I told one coworker (who I knew liked to gossip) that I was thinking about applying for a different job elsewhere but didn't say where. By the next day, news was spreading rampant throughout the agency that I was for sure quitting and they all had me going to a different agency and knew my start date there etc. I knew we had a staff meeting that week and did that to prove a point that women like to gossip about anything even if it isn't true and I pointed out my little experiment. I ended up quitting there and going to work in a mill just to avoid the gossip.
