Can I trade in a truck for a car and get $4500?

Just curious, but I have an old truck that I bought for my Pit Stop Smoke Shop stores as a "billboard" that I parked at the road. I paid $3200 for the truck. I've more than gotten my money's worth out of the truck and no longer use is as a billboard. In fact now it is parked in back and costs me money to insure.

So can I take that old truck, trade it in on a VW diesel Jetta TDI and get the $4500 "cash for clunkers" program money? I don't need a new car now, but I'm thinking that my daughter will be driving in a little over a year, and this program will probably not be around for more than another 60 days. I could buy the car now, use it occasionally and then have a very efficient car when I actually need a car for my daughter.

Since I'm already paying for plates and insurance, those costs are essentially a wash. If I sell the truck, the best offer I've gotten has been $1800 so it is not even close to what Obama will give me (if the truck qualifies???).

Can I trade in a mid-1980's truck for a car?

I already bought a new car before the cash for clunkers program. Dang it. My trade in was not worth $4500.

Mid80's might exclude it on the 25 year rule alone.

This program is so stupid, I hate even thinking about; yet, just to see something trickle back from DC, I'm half tempted to talk my mother into participating.

I hear you there. Just bought a new Prius on June 19 and 2 weeks later they came out with the program. If I had waited they would not have any for months as the wait is now out to 4 months on Prius. We bought the second one the dealer was able to get as they were unloading it off the truck. Went in for an oil change and it cost me $12,000 to trade up for a new one. Last time I take the wife along for service on the car!!

Yes you can if it is at least a 1985 or newer according to their website. Get her a nice little mazda3 i touring 4 door ,coz i doubt you will find a diesel vw on the lot now. My sister and bil just bought 2 of those mazdas and they are getting 36 mpg per tankful, not just on the road. You can get one with the auto for around 18,000.

Well I am only interested in a small diesel. If there are none on the lots then I'd just order one and wait for it. Roughly 45 to 50 miles per gallon are reported by actual users for the Jetta TDI. Add the fact that diesels run forever on lower maintenance costs than gas, and cap that off with the fact that you can brew your own bio-diesel in your garage from salvaged vegetable oil.

Not sure what year the truck is, I'll have to look into that. Might be an '85.

OK, did a bit of checking, the GMC van that I have is a 1986 diesel step van. It is driven about 100 miles a year, is insured, plated and near as I can tell qualifies for the gub-mint money.

Now I don't need a new car RIGHT NOW, but as my daughter is getting very close to driving age, and as I drive a lot of miles with a non-economical SUV, looks like this car might be a good choice for us. I could either park it until she needs it, and it seems like a safe little car, or I could drive it, give my SUV to the lovely Mrs_B, and give the lovely Mrs_B's older, higher mileage, reliable, but very safe Volvo SUV with 11 air bags and countless crumple zones to Melen???

In any case, IF Obama's misguided policy is going to give me $4500 for a vehicle that is worth under $2000, and costs me money to park, then I might as well take the gub-mint money and put it to good use at my house!!!

There is also some sort of diesel credit for that car, I think it is an additional $1200, again directly from the misguided gub-mint policy makers in Waste-ington DC. I can use that money to buy a home-brew diesel fuel maker so I don't have to pay road fuel tax if I brew my own BIO DIESEL. Ain't gub-mint funding great?!?

NO that is bad. They will always be hungry. :whistling::whistling:

Well the tactical training instructor/Sgt of the local police department tends to eat a lot of meals at my house, so its not like he goes away hungry and can probably just snoop around my garage and bust me without much effort.

What motor in the step van, Bob ??

A Cummins 4BT or even 4B would probably sell for $3500 and someone would pay to have the rest of the van for storage. Just a thought.

Nothing worse than someone who doesn't need it looking for a govt handout. More proof that Dems and Reps are all the same.

Really? Using tax dollars taken from the pockets of the citizenry to buy an unneeded foreign vehicle stimulates our economy? :smileywac

Oh, I like it. Trading in my Jeep for a Prius....

NOT!!!!

No, I don't like it, especially since it'll be abused like most govt programs. This thread is a classic example.

Absolutely AGREED with you on your point and that is the whole point of this thread. Here they are giving away our tax dollars and jerks like me are seriously looking at taking advantage of it and the gub-mint is happy to hand me cash for something that is essentially worthless and then subsiding me above and beyond any reasonable value.

The whole plan stinks.

But there are clearly MILLIONS of other jerks out there who are cashing in on this program, clearing off the dealer lots and unloading piece of crap cars at the expense of the FUTURE taxpayers who probably have not even been born yet.

Thank you! At least you understand what you're doing and aren't afraid to admit it.

note to self - must find another way to annoy 'skurka the lurka'. direct assault proved futile. :smileywac

Pointing it out and flaunting it is exactly what I am doing.

I hate this program. Its totally idiotic and a huge waste of OUR TAXED dollars.

We had a big article in our local newspaper yesterday highlighting the UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES of this program, with interviews from repair shops and parts suppliers who have now seen a DEMISE IN THEIR BUSINESS because of the fact that people are no longer repairing their cars. So the new car dealers are moving dead inventory but the used car lots are now hurting, the repair shops are hurting, and the tax payers are screwed.

Oh yeah, this will stimulate the economy :whistling:

Yep the people that really could have used the program that needed it the most was not able to use it.

Now that is funny :thumb:

Eggggzaklee!!!

Trouble is, even our domestic car brands could damned near be considered "foreign" cars. Look where they're made, for Krise sakes!!!! :bangin:

I'd go for it Bob (Skurka).

Melen is going to be paying that $4500 anyway. She might as well get something for it...

Bob,

The "cash for clunkers" ends tomorrow. Dealers have to have all the paperwork submitted by 8PM tomorrow and some have stopped honoring it since they don't know if they can get the paperwork in on time.
Did you get something?
