Joe Satriani IMO is the best. I have all his stuff and one of his best albums/DVD's is "Live in San Francisco" double set. His music is 95% instrumental and he does rock, blues, funk and progressive jazz. I've seen him in 4 different "House of Blues" and several times in Pittsburgh. He does an annual tour called G3 (guitar x3) with Steve Vai and a guest. This years guest was John Petrucci. The album was released a little while ago and his website has a couple videos from their tour in Tokyo.

I know you've heard his music (movies, commercial and games) and he's been around for years. I know it isn't for everyone but if your interested take a look. This is just a way to introduce him and maybe turn you on to some awesome guitar work.

Joe, Steve and John doing Hendrix's "Foxy Lady"

Enjoy!

I'll go in a different direction. Andres Segovia, Bola Sete, Pepe Romero, The Gypsy Kings ..... And they do it without amplifiers or distortion.

Eric Clapton is number 1 to me.
Stevie Ray Vaughan was a close 2nd.

BB King might be the real best ever, but I prefer Clapton.

I should also mention Robert Plant (Honorable Mention?). I listened to the Lemon song off of LZ II this past weekend. IT ROCKS!!!!!

I"ll have to give Joe S more of a listen.

I do not recognize any of those guys jpr62902. No doubt they can play, but I am not familiar with any of their work.

I have the dubious honor of actually having been at the SRV concert at Alpine Valley WI the night SRV was killed in a helicopter crash. Eric Clapton was supposed to be on that helicopter, but gave his seat to Stevie.

Of the currently living artists, I would have to say I like Eric Johnson the best. :thumb:

Duane Allman without a doubt. He played with Clapton on Derek and the Dominoes album ,and the lead opening riff plus the slide guitar work on Layla is him on that album. Rolling stone named him the second best guitarist behind Hendrix. But Hendrix was so much feedback and distortion to get his sound that i really don't care for it. The rub on Hendrix was that he didn't play well with other players because of his style, whereas Duane played well with everybody. The ultimate slide guitar song is "Statesboro Blues" off The Allman Brothers "live at the Fillmore East" album from 1971.

Eric Johnson is definitely in my line up! Eric has did the G3 tour with Joe a couple times. Steve Vai played the devil guitar player in the movie "Crossroads" with Ralph Machio.

Doc.........BTW, I think you meant Jimmy Page, not Robert Plant!

It appears everyone likes Clapton soooooooooo........Go get his "Crossroads Guitar Festival" double disk DVD. Over 40 guitar players performed in this benefit concert.....AWESOME!

Hmmm. There's several others that may qualify as well. A partial list.

Angus Young
Jimmy Page
Carlos Santana
Ritchie Blackmore
Brian May
Slash
David Gilmore
Pete Townshead
Randy Bachmen
Keith Richards
Peter Frampton
Jeff Beck

I even had typed in Jimmy Page first, then I thought about it and thought no he was the lead vocal not the lead guitarist. Thanks for the correction.

What about Eddie Van Halen? He was a god when I was in high school.

Of course, I couldn't care less any more. ;)
I always thought his wife, Valerie was HOT! :D

I thought of the age factor after I posted. I haven't seen her in years so I've no idea how well she held up, so to speak. :)

How about Steve Vai?
Joe Satriani I would have to agree has gotta be one of the best, if not the best

Thanks Mith. It was one of those names that sounded vaugely familiar, but I couldn't name a band he was in or song he did. After reading the link I see why. I never followed any of the 80's heavy metal (poison / whitesnake ...).

Steve was a student of Joe's in ealier times when he taught guitar!

Steve Vai also played in David Lee Roth's band after Eddie gave ole Diamond Dave the boot.

C'mon, fellars. Can't y'all name any decent guitarists outside the rock\blues genre? What about George Benson, Joe Pass, Otmar Liebert?

I do agree with y'all who think Clapton, Vai and Eric Johnson (Cliffs of Dover, anyone?) are all aoutstanding musicians.

Les Paul, Chet Atkins , Toshi Iseda, Roy Clark, Charlie Crowe (Brooks & Dunn), Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Ernie Isley, Bonnie Raitt, Jonny Lang, Joe Walsh, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Buck Dharma................shall I go on........:a1:

Well done, Doggy. Chet Atkins is another of my favorites. I do think Les Paul is overrated, but he obviously knew a thing or two about makin' electric guitars.

From his new album "Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock" the sample of "Revelation". Really one of the best parts of his new tour is the return of Stu Hamm one of the best bass players today (he's in the video)

Now if you wanna here some really jammin licks play "I Just Wanna Rock" from his website (lower right). Takes a little while to get going but well worth the listen.

First, Stevie Ray would have to be right near or on top(Clapton Smapton:hammer:)

The one not mentioned so far, that is very under rated, and his normal band does not showcase his talents, is Neal Schon. He is an amazing guitarist, and has amazing discography outside of Journey. Although he has done some great guitar work with Journey, it really does not showcase his talent.

Interestingly, Journey did not showcase Steve Smith's drumming skills either. Although he did cool solo's back when with Journey, he has become one of the best drummers in the world.

The interesting thing about the quote below, is it breaks from rock. There are some amazing players out there, that could go toe to toe with rockers. Some of thier talent is amazing.

Before Cancer got him, Charles Sawtell was a great guitarist. He is most noted for his bluegrass work with Hot Rize.

So Satch, not as good as Stevie Ray, not as good as Neal, but still not bad... But not the greatest in the world. IMHO, of course :punk:

Gotta respect you got these other folks in the mix :D

Les Paul, Chet Atkins , Toshi Iseda, Roy Clark, Charlie Crowe (Brooks & Dunn), Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Ernie Isley, Bonnie Raitt, Jonny Lang, Joe Walsh, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Buck Dharma................shall I go on........:a1:

For non electric how about Leo Kottke? He is great on the 12 string.

Randy Rhoads was on target to be the greatest of all time IMO until he was tragically killed at the young age of 25 in the year of 1982....if he would have lived long enough to have finished following his passion of classical music i feel he would have been un-touchable in the world of Guitar.....just my opinion.

The first clip was a tune named "Dee" that was unfinished....it shows his understanding and passion for classical and i would have loved to have seen where he would have taken it....such a shame he was lost so young.

Can't tell you how many times I've seen him live but I'm going to see the greatest guitar player in the world tomorrow night at the Palace Theater in Greenburg, PA. It's always a great show!

He is genius, from the new album .................
