Are the license plates in your State delaminating?

I know NY and PA are having issues where the writing is de-laminating from the metal plate.

In NY, you have to request a new plate. If you want the same plate # (for standard plates, not even vanity/custom plates), you need to also send $20.

In PA, you need to complete a form, have the police or inspection station verify your plate is bad then send the form in for a new plate.

Also in PA, "Sometimes PennDOT arranges for plate replacements for old plates. This includes standard passenger plates starting with the letter ‘E’, ‘F’, ‘G’, ‘H’, 'J', and truck plates starting with ‘Y’. If you have a plate with these letters, you will be getting a new one when the plate is transferred to another vehicle. "
They say when you transfer it to a different vehicle, you'll get a new plate. I guess we didn't buy new vehicles fast enough for them so they're just mailing us new plates.

We were having problems up here with the same thing. Numbers and paint peeling off the plates. They issued new replacement ones. I did it for the truck last year.

In Indiana we get a new sticker, but keep our old plate. I think every 8 (?) years, if you keep a car that long, you get a new plate. I have not had any problems with delamination.

Pretty sure most plates last 8 years. Moving a plate from vehicle to vehicle when you buy something new keeps the plates going for many many years (my truck plate is at least 20 years old).
Our state doesn't do stickers anymore (except for off-road vehicles). They don't even mail your registration. You MUST print it when you do your online renewal.

I believe my 30 year old Dodge one ton has the original plate. It has lots of renewal stickers.
Plates used to be made in our prisons. Seems a useful incorporation of penal activity.
Like everything else in our world, do they now come from China?

Why is this happening ? Is everyone's plates made the same place ?

I registered some stuff this week and a guy was there who had it happen but when the state sent the new plate ) same #), they didn't include the sticker we get every year. The town clerk said he'd have to carry the bad plate around with him in case he got stopped.

We have plates front and rear with a month sticker and a year sticker. This guys plate was failed when he went for the yearly inspection.

Same problem. State will replace with new plates at no charge. Aluminum needs to be prepped correctly for paint to adhere properly. Oxidation on aluminum starts almost immediately and needs to be removed before priming. Usually this involves roughing the surface with 220 grit and using a self etching primer. My guess, none of these things are being done.

Lots of oxidation on those New Pork plates.

Ya got to love it. New York state goes with cheapest bid, gets what they paid for and then wants to charge the citizens (by issuing citations) because the state royally screwed up by using the cheapest bidder. No wonder everyone from New York is relocating to Florida.

Ohio charges $12 for a replacement plate. The plate on my 4runner was 10 years old and had faded enough that I wanted a new one. When renewing the tag last year I paid $12 extra for a new plate.

So, you have to pay for registration (annually) and pay for the state's fuck up of crap plates?
The state's f-up and re-charging people is what pisses me off.

Yep. But the plate was fading, and weather worn. Not delaminating. Our option is to get a sticker with registration to put on existing plate and pay $12 more if you want a replacement plate. I'll see if I can dig out the old replaced plate and take a pic. It wasn't that bad but I wanted a new one.

edit to add: I looked and do not see the old plate. son in law collects them so I'm thinking I already gave it to him.
