The New England frame finishing tour begins which will have destinations in multiple states. It’s been about a decade since Marty has ventured off the East Coast Preserve after being rescued and the first step to assimilating back on the sno!

Today the first leg departed Massachusetts for a glass bead blasting destination of Hampstead, New Hampshire.

Diving into the transfer case after clean up with master blaster and brake cleaner.

The rear yoke came off with little pulling pressure. The front needed more so I worked it slowly with some heat.

OE seals area National #50092 which crosses two a few different styles I need to research. One looks to be a spicer which moves the wear area on to clean metal although these look surfaces look pretty good for the OE style they also exists. TBD

When I do this again one day, a tip would be to apply a little heat to the cover race areas while slowly working tapping it apart but went smooth without.

Marty continues to impress. Clean and no metal inside the transfer case. Gears are nice and rust free. Bearings dropped out on disassembly you see in the photo.

Case looks to be sealed with grease as expert resources indicated would be most likely. Mix of open bearings New Departure 3208 and metal shield New Departure 43208 plus one more part number I need to get a photo of. Maybe a SKF or NSK bearing or two.

The blind holes might be where the shields belong but I need to marinate all this transfer case study for a bit. Marks indicate case has been separated before me.

Other oddity is bearings are designed for a snap ring so maybe Tucker dual use……

MY (1965) transfer case has tapered bearings. There are adjustable threaded plugs built into the transfer case to tighten the bearings.

......... "Never build two alike".

Merry Christmas from the East Coast Preserve!

Got a little time in to remove the bearings from the shafts made of axels it appears. These bearings are probably the same ones used on the outer pontoon my guess….

Best way to remove from shaft is to take the cage and outer bearing off. Copious amounts of acute heat and they pop right off with Harbor Freight quality puller.

See pictures of the bearings and seals for reference.

Vickers Power Steering Booster on the bench. Removed two broken bolts during disassembly.

Open to any suggestions on competent shops to rebuild. Doesn’t leak but needs a refresh.
