Gene Robinson: Gay Bishop Giving Obama Inauguration Prayer

New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson, a vocal gay rights leader, will open President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration with a prayer on Sunday's kick-off event at the Lincoln Memorial.

"I am writing to tell you that President-Elect Obama and the Inaugural Committee have invited me to give the invocation at the opening event of the Inaugural Week activities, We are One, to be held at the Lincoln Memorial," Robinson wrote in an email to friends.

The announcement comes after weeks of outcry from the gay community over Obama's choice of evangelical, anti-gay pastor Rick Warren to deliver the inaugural invocation.

"It's important for any minority to see themselves represented in some way," Robinson said in an interview with the Concord Monitor. "Whether it be a racial minority, an ethnic minority or, in our case, a sexual minority. Just seeing someone like you up front matters."

Robinson is the first openly gay diocesan bishop in the Anglican Communion. "God never gets it wrong. The church often takes a long time to get it right. It is a human institution, but one capable of self-correction," Robinson told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "I believe in my heart that the church got it wrong about homosexuality. There is great excitement in my heart to be living in a time when the church is starting to get it right."

Robinson said he would love to sit down with Rick Warren but believed that the California pastor has "perpetrated lies about the gay, lesbian and bisexual community."

What a country!

You can be a sick pervert, damn proud of it, and still become a bishop! :whistling:

And some folks wonder why a lot of good people don't go to church anymore.

Can't find if Rick Warrren is still speaking in that article. Obama was forced to invite this guy. Not only has the Gay people been bitching so has the media. On Meet the Press a few weeks back you could tell the media was upset and I even though for a moment there were going to turn on Obama.

Like ....gay preachers have not done this before?
Gays are welcomed and protected (even if pedophiles) by many organized religions.

Nothing against gays (what they do in their bedroom is their business), but I do not see the news, other than he is "out of the closet".

This is the very thing that irks me about liberals.

They scream and whine and pitch a hissie fit about not being recognized. Then once acknowledged, they shout down everyone else.

In its finality, this is a case pf "Enumerated Rights" vs. Rump Rangers.

How is that even a consideration?

How could a gay person be a teacher of something that is against gay activity?
Gene Robinson does not believe that there is anything wrong with gay activity. He is an Episcipalian Bishop and has caused a huge rift within the Anglican church, so much so that some entire parishes have left that faith and converted to Catholicism (some of the conservative parishes) or joined in communion with other Anglican factions.

FWIW, Angicans and Catholics both welcome gays as members of their churches. The Catholic belief is that anyone with a same sex attraction is expected to live a chaste life, no different than any non-married heterosexual. The conservative Episcopalians share that same belief with Catholics but the liberal sects of that faith seem to allow for gay activity while still advocating that heterosexual relations outside of marriage is wrong. I don't quite understand that logic.

I don't understand it myself Bob, and never will.

As for the gay thing, it's been touch and go with me (since my youngest sister was a lesbian).

I felt like I had to accept her embracing that lifestyle even though it went directly against the way we were taught to believe.

In further reference to what you say, how the hell can a gay priest in good conscience advocate gayness (directly or indirectly-publicly or privately)-yet counsel one on the sanctity of marriage, pre-marital sex and birth control?

I'll never get it!

Just let me slip quietly into the back door of church, do my Catholic duty, and leave.
That's the way I feel these days.

I grew up in the Episcopal Church, my Aunt that is a few years older than me is/was gung ho Episcopalian. When all this madness started, she did what Bob is talking about and went with an Anglican branch. Me, I'm just a heathen sometimes sorta Baptist.

Near as I can tell, and I clearly am not an expert, there are several different sects of the Anglican/Episcopal Church. Some are very conservative while some are very liberal. I do know that the in the Ft Worth, Texas region they took a vote among Anglican Priests and Parrishoners and they overwhelming voted to switch their entire Parishes to Roman Catholic. Something over 3/4ths of the Priests have petitioned Rome to start the conversion to Catholicism and most of the members of the parish are also working on their conversions.

The English church is apparently part of the sect. There is another branch that is based in South America??? which is apparently conservative and the two branches, while related, have some very different views on things. I've seen reports of many parishes that have switched their allegiance from England to the South American branch.

:hammer:I don,t think I,ll ever understand homosexuality. But I do enjoy girl on girl action!LOL!! Im a typical guy, I can,t help that! LOL!!!:brows::yum::whistling::flowers:

This gay thing has now touched even my close friends. One of my best friends, an avid golfer, wants to be reincarnated as a lesbian.

He figures he can still chase women, but use the front tees.

It's a good thing this is a male gay priest. That way people will not approve of him equally....Now if it was a cute big boobed blondie then the disapproval would be more one sided:hammer:

I think he dresses up like that when he celebrates mass in San Francisco :whistling:
It depends on what side the fence he's on.....You know what I'm talking about....when you look and wonder if they are the male or female in that couple? Besides, don't they wear a dress in a black robe fashion anyway?
