Canada ... it's really just northern Mexico at this point

Long read but if you are interested in the subject:

Trump’s other complaint is that in 2024, more than 21,000 pounds of fentanyl was apprehended at U.S. borders which his executive order points out is enough to kill more than four billion people. Fentanyl is odourless, tasteless, and therefore hard to detect. And only a tiny amount, two milligrams (about the size of grams of salt) is all that’s needed to kill the average adult, as it is 100 times more toxic than morphine. So, while only 43 pounds were actually intercepted coming from the Canadian border, this doesn’t justify dismissing concerns about Canada’s fentanyl market.

But don’t take my word for it. Mathieu Bertrand, chief superintendent of Serious Organized Crime & border Integrity at RCMP Federal Policing told CBC in 2023 that Canada is not only a significant producer of fentanyl, we’re also an exporter, like Trump complains. And Canadian fentanyl has gone global. In other words, this is a real problem that Canada has to tackle, even if Canada is not as large a producer as Mexico at this time. Look around at our neighbourhoods. That could quickly change. We do ourselves no favours pretending it isn’t a legitimate concern.

Pierre is the man , hopefully our next prime minister . A conservative politician who could clean up this mess that Trudeau has left us in.
We were on our way to a spring / fall election this year . Now with this "crisis " and what looks like a protracted trade war looming , the current liberal government can possibly spin this and delay the election until the fall of 2026. Great timing........

All Canada needs to do is give RCMP the freedom to sit down fentanyl labs, have Canadian customs target fentanyl coming into Canada so it stops coming into the US through our northern border, and have Canadian customs stop helping illegals from Canada being into the US.
Simple.
Canada needs to stop aidibg and abbeting criminals and contraband passing through to the border.
The rest is just noise.

What about all the illegal firearms coming from the US to Canada to feed the gang violence. Works both ways.

Criminals will do illegal things so that is a moot point.
The government has been brain washed and most of the populist too to think an object is bad same as Germany did same
When do they ban cars to stop drunk driving.
The key is control they want everyone under their control
Its no different here in the US some in the US want control but we have a piece of paper saying shall not be infringed
I never hear about a legal gun owner verses illegal gun person commitning crime

I guarantee you most of those are coming through the Indian Reserves that have full treaty access across the border. But addressing that issue is really going to hurt some feelings.

All the tariffs Canada is proposing will hurt Canadians more than it will hurt Americans. But some times lessons need to be learned the hard way.

I don't even know how illegal arms get into the USA.

After spending over a year on a federal grand jury, I do know that full auto weapons are coming to the USA from China, Mexico and other nations.

As Canada outlaws far more types of weapons than the US, my guess is that weapons do flow north, but I'd bet the gangs and organized crime in Canada arranging for the cross border shipments and it would seem to me that shutting the border would help. But don't blame the guns we own in the US for the criminal gang violence in another nation. The gang violence up there is no difference than the gang violence down here and likely has the very same root causes as gang in most Western societies.

I think the huge difference is that the Canadian government chose to allow for a porous border of people into the USA but the US government actually tries to prevent guns from flowing across our border. So these are major policy issue differences and policy issues are the, as I understand it, primary reason for the tariffs.

Pretty much every economic forecast report I have seen suggests that the tariffs will hurt Canada (and also Mexico) far more than they will hurt the USA. Several seemed to indicate that Alberta may be harder hit than other areas Canada.

An age old problem , anything that can't be had easily or legally attained will be smuggled across the border for profit. A USA /Mexico border of close to 2000 miles ,we'll all be watching to see how and if it can be sealed. Head north and were looking at close to 5500 miles long , literally cutting through streets of towns , lakes , mountains ,"closing the border" takes on a whole new meaning .

I don’t cross the border often, but when I do, I notice a lot more scrutiny going south than I do going north.

I find it funny that all the talk in the news is about Trumps 25% tariffs, but no mention of Canada’s tariffs that have been on US products for years, like milk and dairy in the 245% range. I find it funny how some people I know are giddy about Canada “fighting back “ against Trump , it’s absolutely stupid to react the way Canada is. Yes, our liquor stores are taking US booze off the shelves, that should cripple their economy 🙄, my lord Canadian government, grow the hell up and act like an adult.

For WHATEVER it is worth, the tariffs were levied on BOTH Mexico and Canada.

Apparently Mexican President Sheinbaum (sp?) has agreed to send 10,000 troops to the border to help with the cross border violence, drug and human trafficking and Trump has agreed to HALT the tariffs with Mexico for at least 30 while a review of Mexico's promises and actions takes place.

So is little Fidel of the North going to step up?

Canada Conservatives Campaign Against Trump: Tariffs ‘Unjust and Unjustified’

Canadian Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre announced a sprawling national plan to address President Donald Trump’s 25-percent tariffs on Canadian goods this weekend, condemning them as “unjust and unjustified” against America’s “best friend.”
President Trump announced a plan shortly before his inauguration to impose 25-percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada, as well as a ten-percent tariff on Chinese goods, in response to the ongoing mass migration and organized crime crisis on America’s borders and China’s outsized role in fueling the North American fentanyl trade.
“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Trump promised in November, when he initially stated he would impose the tariffs on his first day in office.
Once in office, Trump said on Inauguration Day that he would give the countries in question until February 1 to take meaningful measures to stop crime on our borders and curtail the fentanyl trade or face the tariffs. The tariffs went into effect on Saturday.
Canada is in a uniquely weak position to address the tariffs. It currently does not have a functional parliament as radical leftist Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used a provision known as prorogation to paralyze the Parliament through March 24. Trudeau’s poor handling of the tariff threat resulted in political pressure forcing him to resign from the prime ministership and the leadership of the Liberal Party; the prorogation allows the Liberals to choose a new leader and comfortably regroup before expected general elections this year. Without a lawmaking body, Trudeau can only use executive action to address the crisis.
Poilievre, widely believed to be the frontrunner to replace Trudeau as prime minister, issued a speech condemning Trump from imposing the tariffs but subtly accepting the premise of the sanctions by calling for Canada to strengthen security on its border and fight the fentanyl trade, the issues that prompted the tariffs. In a speech on Sunday, Poilievre – likely aware of how Trudeau’s apparent weakness on the tariff issue tanked his political career – categorically condemned the tariffs and launched a plan to dramatically boost domestic trade in an attempt to make Canada less dependent on the American market.
“Common Sense Conservatives condemn President Trump’s massive, unjust and unjustified tariffs which will damage both American and Canadian economies,” Poilievre proclaimed, calling Canada America’s “closest neighbor, greatest ally, and best friend.”
“We share the longest undefended border and fought alongside Americans in two world wars, Korea and Afghanistan, where 158 of our brave men and women died helping the U.S. avenge the 9/11 attacks,” Poilievre declared. “There is no justification whatsoever for these tariffs this treatment.”
“You are our friends, you are our neighbors,” he continued. “We share the longest undefended border in the history of the world … You have a trade surplus with us when energy is excluded and, when it is included, the deal is even better for you because you buy our oil and our gas at massive price discounts.”
“Not because we’re nice Canadians, but because here at home we’ve made really dumb decisions to prevent us from exporting our energy to any other countries,” he explained. “Either way, Americans are better off with this friendship.”
Rather than blame Trump for Canada’s economic woes, Poilievre asserted that Canada was “in this position because we sell twice as much to the Americans as we sell to themselves,” decrying onerous regulations that prevent a significant volume of inter-provincial trade.

The RCMP says they have a fentanyl production problem. And we know Canada's customs let's anyone in, heading towards our border.
And Canada heavily puts huge tariffs on our dairy products.
Go, tariff us some more. We'll just double it

OR FIX THE PROBLEM TRUDY CREATED.

And now it looks like the Trump Tariffs have vanished. . .

Canada will implement a $1.3 Billion Border Plan:

Advanced Helicopters,
Enhanced Coordination with American Partners
Increased Resources to stop the flow of Fentanyl.
Nearly 10,000 Personnel will be deployed to U.S-Canadian Border to assist
The Prime Minister will appoint a Fentanyl Czar
Designate the Cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations
Ensure 24/7 Eyes on the Border
Launch a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat Organized Crime, Fentanyl and Money Laundering.

For all the
Canadian outrage over tariffs let’s not forget some of Canada‘s good neighbor tariffs on the USA

I found, what I think is interesting and I'd love to hear a few of our Canadians speak to this story.

. . . For many liberal commentators, Canada is not only one of Washington’s closest allies—it is a beacon of democracy and human rights, under the benevolent rule of a leader who has long presented himself as a foil to nasty conservatives, north and south of the border.
But when Trump looks north, he sees something different. Beyond the usual concerns about mass migration into the United States, massive fentanyl lab discoveries in British Columbia, and immigrant communities in Canada taking full advantage of the cross-border drug trade, Trump also sees discord among Canada’s provinces, and the Canadian government’s increasing proximity to the Chinese Communist Party.
Tobi Lutke, CEO of the Canadian company Shopify, wrote on X that Trump’s demands on immigration and fentanyl “are not crazy demands, even if they came from an unpopular source.” He also retweeted a post faulting Trudeau for “antagonizing candidate Trump.” Not only has Trudeau needlessly alienated a foreign leader, he has overlooked spreading Chinese influence and disregarded the rights of his own citizens, forfeiting any moral authority.
Despite attempts to conceal the truth from the public, it has been revealed that the CCP has received knowing aid from members of parliament, and assisted 11 candidates in the Toronto area in 2019—most of whom were affiliated with Trudeau’s Liberal Party. Given his party's involvement, it is perhaps unsurprising that Trudeau has failed to get to the bottom of these acts.
If Trudeau has been remiss in countering foreign influence, he has been assiduous in crushing domestic dissent. In January, a judge in Alberta sentenced former Fort Macleod town councilor Marco Van Huigenbos to four months in prison for his role at one of the Freedom Convoy protest sites back in 2022. Van Huigenbos was found guilty of “mischief,” which in Canada is a broad based charge carrying a potential 10-year prison sentence. The mischief of which Van Huigenbos was found guilty amounted to acting as a liaison between protesters in Coutts, Alberta and the police officers who were monitoring the site, an act of diplomacy befitting his position in local political life.
Van Huigenbos is one of three men who were targeted by Crown Prosecutors over allegations that they were the “organizers” of a spontaneously organized and leaderless protest. Despite a lack of evidence, a jury found them guilty, and Van Huigenbos is now behind bars. In another instance of the Trudeau government persecuting peaceful demonstrators, a Canadian TikTok personality named Pat King has recently been convicted of “mischief” over his involvement in the Freedom Convoy protest. King is to be sentenced later this month, and the Crown is seeking 10 years.
Canada would be in a stronger position to protest Trump’s tariffs if it had adequately addressed Chinese interference in its election and refrained from abridging the rights of its citizens. Now, however, Trump should use his leverage to highlight the illiberal and anti-democratic tendencies of Justin Trudeau and his heir apparent, Mark Carney. Part of any plan to lift tariffs should be assurances that Canada will partner with the United States to resist Chinese interference, and that it will respect the free-speech rights of its citizens.
. . .

Don’t even know where to start or where to end, could go on for days talking about this and other serious issues with our government. Trudeau has been the most corrupt leader in Canadian history and pretty much from day one since he started in office. He praised China and how they were able to control their population soon after he was elected, around the same time he said the budget would balance itself, I knew then we were in for a rough ride. Unfortunately I don’t believe that the conservatives are a whole lot better, they also were caught with Chinese interference. I don’t have any faith in any level of politics or any party , they are all corrupt and only there for themselves. When you’re allowed to operate with absolutely no accountability you will do whatever you want.

One thing Trump is certainly doing is shortening the lives of liberals here in Canada! It’s unbelievable how consumed so many of them are over this, and of course know everything and are fully informed by spending a solid five minutes watching a tictok video and a couple memes, that’s more than enough information for them to argue with complete rage!

If you voted Obama and Biden then you, of course, are actually responsible for all of this.

I'm a Libertarian, therefore not a Trump fanboy, but Trump is cleaning up the mess that the 3 Obama/Biden administrations created.

Trump actually got Canada to enforce its border, and also which became totally porous in one direction. Canada allowed the fentanyl gangs to shovel that drug across our border.

So apologize for the 3 yo w/his rattle but it sure appears that the 3 yo did the right thing.
