SnowChicken Bombi Build

Active member
Hey all, new here and new to the snowcat scene. I picked up a '81 Bombi recently and am currently going through it with some mods planned. Ive been trolling the forum for the last bit, lots of great info. Figured Id do a thread on the build. I just gotta find the best way to upload photos and Ill get posting!

Got the photos figured. Here’s the unit when I picked it up. In pretty decent shape. Came with a plow and groomer skid which is pretty hack. It ran great and other than the tracks and drive sprockets needing some work it was pretty good.

There’s been a few mods done to it from the PO. Aux fuel tank, also modded the front plow mount. But other than that pretty much stock.

Drive sprockets are pretty trashed. Have a new set on order. Brad from MNOutdoors hooked me up!

I feel the boogies are decent? I plan on foam filling them. But the track cleats are pretty worn.

I had some other projects to clean up to make room in the shop but finally pulled it in on Sunday

Like I mentioned earlier, the PO modded the blade mount to be able to raise it higher, but it prevents the cab to be removed[emoji51] so I notched the cab out to clear, the cab needs a bunch of glass work also but I’ll plate this in with some aluminum so it can be removed easily

With that off I started going through the wiring to remove, total hack fest in there. Cut out a bunch of stuff and will clean it up.

Welcome to the madness! That’s a great looking Bombi! The reserve fuel tank is an interesting addition (looks like 20-30 gallon reserve?). And the smoke stack....looks tough!

Bob

Thanks for the welcome everyone:beer:

Thanks Bob! I haven't measured the aux tank but your probably right on the capacity. The cats previous life was a snowmobile club groomer so they used the tank alot I was told. But pulling apart the front it looks like they haven't used the factory tank in awhile. I will be removing the tank for now but will make some better mounts and quick connects so it will be quick and easy to to put on if needed

Pulled some more apart last night and cleaning up as I go.

Big greasy watery misery in the belly pan. Got the water drained and will clean it up best I can

Removed the front plow. All the quick connects were rusted solid minus one. The plan is to make up new pins for the plow and new connections but will build a winch mount that will use the plow mount locations so can swap between the 2. The winch will most likely reside there most of the time, but will be nice to use the plow if needed.

A little time yesterday to poke around. I removed the rear hydraulic valve block and lines.

It only had 2 seats when I got it. I want to have 3 seats in it and the PO didn’t have the original one. So grabbed a Ford Ranger back jump seat. Other than having to build some odd mounts as it was originally a side fold up, it should work mint.

Little mock up test

It gives you a bit more leg room as you can see the original Bombi seat mounts are quite a bit more forward. Myself and my wife tried the seat out and its decently comfortable, for her anyways. Im 6'1, 220 so I look like a sasquatch humping a baseball in it...

Opened up the front diff, oil is trash. But other than that all seems to be okay. Brake bands look decent enough. Will drain the diff, lines and cooler out and splash in some new oil.

I Would love to see how that efi setup turns out I didnt know they made one for our motors. I just deleted my governer under my carb, and put a new pertronix electronic ignition distributor in, and it really woke up the motor huge difference. No longer have to deal with adjusting the points.
Nate

Yeah Im pretty stoked as Holley just released it a few months ago. Im pretty familair with aftermarket EFI setups, I run a FAST unit on my race truck. Also between all my buddies we have run almost every make and was pretty impressed with the Sniper setup for the price. Awesome to hear about the improvements on yours as I will be deleting the governor and doing ignition upgrades aswell. I will also be boosting the motor via baby turbski :brows: and will run low boost numbers to compensate for elevation. Not sure if I will get the turbo done this season, see how everything plays out but its on the list.

EFI, Turbo......this is going to be good! I have the petronix upgrade for the distributor, haven’t put in yet (redid points , engine sounded good...but much easier long term with the petronix).

Bob

I bugged Holley last year asking them why they didn’t make a Single barrel kit yet, so I went with Affordable Fuel Injection Kit, and it was been great but no digital read out; then Holley came out with their kit...grrr
Keep us posted on how it works!

Dang! well glad the AFI kit is working out. The digital read out is definitely nice and will use it for gauges. I will for sure:thumbup:

What is the pertronix Part# you guys are using? is it a 1244A?

I haven’t installed mine yet, but went with PNX-1241LS (1.6L, Ford). I’ll install soon and follow up.

Bob

P.s. been using a Petronix coil, no resistor....doesn’t get hot while running; PNX-40611.

Finally making some sparks on this thing, started beefing up the ram mount and added another hole for the top pin for the winch mount I plan to build

Need some more material to finish it up

Moved onto the foot stops, tied them into the side to help support the area where I will be tying in the cage rack tubing.

Then cut some 1/8th fish plates out for the outside

And tacked on. Same for both sides.

Also whipped up some bulkhead leads for the winch through the front bumper.
Hacked up some red and black Teflon

and some 3/8 round stock

Threaded it and some rubber fuel line for isolation

And done. Will add a master disconnect to the power lead so I’ll only energize it when needed.
