What is it With Tow Truck Drivers?

Is it just me or do all tow truck drivers drive like maniacs? What is with that? About a year ago we had a tow truck (a large one with a flat bed) veer across the center line of the highway, critically injuring two elderly women. He claimed that he was answering his radio. :drive2: :drive2:

I don't know the answer to this, but you will get your answer when Caddy Driver reads this. He is a tow truck operator in the Seattle area.....

I saw another maniac tow truck driver on the way to work this morning! Maybe they give these guys extra strong coffee with testosterone before each shift.

I was run off the road by a tow truck driver a few months ago. To give you an idea how close to a collision we got, the passenger mirror of my car was flipped backwards by his mirror when he passed me on the right. And yes, he did have a car on the back of his truck.

I think they drive like that so they're getting the experience necessary to drive a car-carrier 18-wheeler. Those car-carrier guys make the tow truck drivers look like they're conservative.

I like tow truck drivers. I think they are the model of stability in a world of wrecked and broken auto's.
Why do you think they call 'em wreckers?

there is nothing serious under the sun, without humor we would only have the alternative.

Most of the "hookers" I see are decent drivers, and even look like someone that would be presentable almost anywhere. But there are a few exceptions. Two that stick out in my mind, are two drivers for a local company. These two look like Darrel and Darrel, and for the most part, that may be where the charactors came from. Both of them wear Carhartt bibs year round, that don't appear to have ever left their bodies either. Then there's the year round toque, just as greasy, and always pulled down over their blackhead infested ears.:puke2: Their hair looks like they use Rotella T for slick it down grease. They both have old beat to crap F350's. These guys live together about a mile away from me. It appears they may be both married to the same woman, kinda hard to tell, then again, it might be their sister, or mother. I suspect it's the same person though to them.:4_11_9: There's always a slew of greasy little brats running around, and they have horses. The horses look in good shape though.:D They have 7 or 8 beater cars, a Century boat on a trailer, wheels removed ofcourse, a corncrib that someday soon, is gonna fall and take out all the racoons that live in it, along with a couple goats.:boom: There must be half dozen ATV's, and three snowmobiles that have grass growing up thru the tracks. I'm not kidding guys!! Maybe manana I can take a photo for you all to enjoy. It's dogpatch at it's best!!:17875: :14_6_20: :fart2:

The next time you are stuck in seattles crappy traffic because of an accident or stall on I-5, youre gonna wish for a tow truck to clear the mess. In the state of Washington, if you are a REGISTERED TOW TRUCK for the state patrol rotation, you are considered an EMERGENCY vehicle, so if we have our red lights flashing you better get out of our fawking way just like you would for a fire truck. Also, hang up your gawddamed cell phone, remove your coffee cup from your face and pay attention to the traffic around you

dont judge a whole industry by the actions of a few. Sure there are rogue drivers but the vast majority are professionals. Im curious as to wehat kind of work, if any, YOU do. I'd love to make disparaging comments about YOUR profession. While youre bashing ALL tow truck drivers, why not go after cab drivers and pizza driver. And, for your info, there is a law on the books here in Washington now that the state patrol is enforcing that requires you to SLOW DOWN or CHANGE lanes when you see ANY emergency vehicle working on the side ofthe road with their RED or BLUE lights activated...the fine is over a hundred dollars

Caddy Daddy-

You are right. I apologize for making the blanket statement about tow truck drivers and I would be just as upset as you if someone made the statement about my profession.

In fact, I experience the frustration of people not pulling over for lights/sirens all the time driving an engine or medic unit. When relatives of the patient ride with me up front on the way to the hospital, invariably they comment on how many people fail to yield to the siren.

Once again, I'm sorry if I offended you.

What is it with these fire engine guys that blast the siren when they are on the back bumper of your car and then go swerving into on coming traffic just to get to the fire so they can warm their hands? Have they no consideration??? Where did they purchase their licenses????? These guys are a bunch of boneheads!!!!!!!

It is amazing the satisfaction that that horn can bring when some numbnuts refuses to wake up and move over. As a matter of fact, that would be a great present for Mrs. Junkman..............

Mr Bonehead....apology accepted. And i will agree that SOME tow truck drivers are jerks. Most but not all of them are paid on a COMMISSION bas so they have the "hurry up i gotta make more money mentality". My company pays me a liveable hourly wage, so i dont care if im in traffic. I agree with you about the morons that dont get out of your way when you are responding to a call running Code 3. we face a similar level of frustration when responding to Police incidents and we dont have a siren we can use. And if i read your post correctly, i assume you are either a fireman/ EMT/ Paramedic or Ambulance guy. You have my utmost respect for the job you do. Some of your fellow EMS types were responsible for my father being able to spend more time on this earth. Thank you for what you do...RF

Caddy Daddy-

Thanks for the thanks. Maybe next time I'm over in the city at VM or Harborview I could give you a call and you could move some of the illegally parked cars from around the ER! :bling:

Seriously, there are jerks in every profession (just ask my coworkers) and all it takes is one to give the whole lot a bad name.

Where in Seattle do you do most of your work? Ever have any problems with irate car owners who are being towed by the police? :2gunsfiri

I work on the eastside in the afluent suburbs where Bill Gates lives. Most of my customers are referred by the auto dealershipsor we are called bythe WSP or BPD. I dont do the Seattle city Police towing but i know peple who do. People who are towedbecause of illegal or improper parking, either by the police or private property custodians can be very upset and nasty.....Been there done that thats why i work where i do now

Almost got hit this afternoon by a tow truck driver towing a car. He was passing a mail truck (the little jeep type) and swerved into my lane on a 2 lane road.

This is why they drive crazy. Vicarious authority. A tow truck is not an emergency vehicle. It is a hazard vehicle like a snow plow or road grader. If it needs to respond in an emergency manner, it will be escorted by an emergency vehicle. Have you ever taken an emergency vehicle operators course?

Tow truck driver's rock. I work in the law enforcement field and we rely big on tow trucks. For example, we had a bad accident on a interstate this week. Traffic backed up really bad, and people were irate about having to sit in traffic. However, they would not move over and let the tow truck through. If they would have got out of the way for the tow truck then we could of opened up the lane sooner. Whenever i call on a tow truck driver for help they are willing to do about anything for us.

So I salute you Caddy Daddy.

I agree that some of them are professionals and can do remarkable things with their trucks. But that does not give them the right to be reckless on the roadways. A traffic back up due to an accident is not life or death. It is inconvenient at most.

I agree 100% Bone! They drive those things like they are race cars. So I generally have fun cutting them off or blocking them in. I know. Im stupid for it. But its just so damn enjoyable. :D

I agree bulldog, no one has the right to be reckless on the roadways. The tow company we have a contract with is required to obey traffic laws. The owner holds all of the drivers to a very high standard. But if people box in the tow truck or do not allow it to reach the accident site, then the roadway will remain closed. Which means no one is going anywhere until the tow truck reaches the accident and removes the vehicles.

I agree. If someone boxes in or interfere's with the tow truck they should be delt with by the police. It is just wrong.

Yeah... let me correct my statement from above. While we are all moving down the road and this tow truck driver is driving like a dick, I generally will go the same speed as the car next to me so the guy cant get by and start swerving and weaving in and out in front of me. So 'boxing in' is not exactly the same I suppose. Im still a jerk for doing it though. Im a bad man. :(

Sushi, in all seriousness- be careful. That is an easy way to get blown away.:2gunsfiri

You realize that would mean Dead Sushi :goodnight !!

And.....A tow truck driver would have to come take your car...:drive2:

So you make everyone behind the tow truck driver suffer also. Like Bone said, you are playing a dangerous game. I would guess even more dangerous up around the Chicago area where you do your driving.
That is a habit you should try to break.
An idiot driver will NOT learn any lesson you try to teach them, after all they are idiots. You just piss em off and they'll do something even more idiotic. You or some other innocent driver might have to pay because of it.

Hey Bone, I'm surrprised you still have wreckers that tow cars. All of our tow truck drivers have gone to the hydraulic tilt bed car carrier. They drag the car up on it. Seems much safer. They still use the Giant sized tow trucks for big 18 wheeler rigs, but for passenger cars and trucks it's the tilt bed car hauler.
What is the majority up your way?

We have both types, although the tilt-type seems to be getting more popular. I think the tow-types come in handy pulling cars up embankments and such. I remember a couple of years ago, we had an elderly woman put it in drive instead of reverse and launch her car into Puget Sound. Her car was discovered by the gardner a couple of hours later. THATS when you need a tow-type truck.
