OTB-Bombi! Let the Jury Begin

OTB

Hey Guys! So I am one of the new guys here and I will be reaching out to y'all over the course on my restoration for help. A lot of knowledge on here and it make this jury a little less nerve racking! I bought my Bombi from a fella that made me a hell of a deal, but My Bombi is going to need a lot of TLC. The tub looks like swish cheese with all the rust holes, but at least when I am done, it will be brand new, LOL!

These are all the photo I have right now, but I will get you guys some more photos after this weekend.

My plan is to turn my Bombi into one of the 5 passenger models. So I my be asking for some in depth photos of the 5 passenger cab and some ideas from you guys. Should be fun!

Let the Jury Begin!

Awesome! Ill be following along for sure. Just looking at your track tires, the two fronts on the "drivers side" are they solid wheels or air?

So, I called Alpine Guide about it (the manufacture of the tires). The fella I spoke to (super nice guy!) told me there are no marks to distinguish between their foam filled and solid rubber tires.

He did say the solid rubber ones should weight about 40 lbs, while the Urethane Foam ones should weight around 26 lbs.

I had to do some tire repair, so I took those two off and moved them to the rear left and right and they felt closer to 40 lbs. So I am thinking they are the solid rubber ones.

Sweet, I didn't know you could get a solid rubber tire for the bombi

Hello there my fellow bombardiers!

So I began my journey today into this mess and I came across something that may have been a diamond in the rough!

I have attached a bunch of pictures to this post, but I want you guys to look at the last ones of the differential. I don't know what the hell I'm looking at because I've never dealt with anything like this, but I have looked at pictures of other people who have posted pictures of their differentials and the soup of water and oil that they have.

The first thing that I noticed was how damn shiny everything was, then I noticed how 1 sides shaft appears to have red silicone and a new race or whatever that is while the other side has what appears to be the factory race and seal. Then I noticed the brake bands! These damn things look like maybe they're new? Again, I don't know what I'm looking at but they certainly look like they're new.

Looks like the Bombi had a refresh at some point time. A little elbow grease and paint, she’ll be like new! How are the tracks? Engine?

Oh, there will be alot of elbow grease! There is a ton of rust in the tub. Alot of the welds are separated from axles. But, when it's done I guess it will all be new!

You can kind of see it in this photo.

Excellent! I did the same on the engine......ran ok, but figured why not, rebuild it so I know it’s good! The tracks take time, but are straightforward (lots of great info on our site about your machine). Have fun, it’s a great project.

Looking for some advice guys. So I posted this on Facebook asking where people were picking up at the rebuild kits for the 1.6 L industrial Ford motor and I've had several people return a comment saying instead of rebuilding the 1.6 L industrial motor that I should make the transition to a 2.3 l with an automatic.

Just trying to get some feedback from you fellows as well. My motor seemed strong when I removed it and I figured I would just refresh the thing and be good to go, but now I'm rethinking it.

I know I was doing research on the 2.3 l and it kind of looks like maybe everyone is using the 2.3 l that came out of the Ford Ranger from about 1985 to 1997.

Thoughts?

Also, if you have made this transition, I'd love to see some pictures of your power plants mounted into your bombies.

No real experience from me but these Bombi's seemed to be under powered. More is better. :)

An automatic would be nice. Shifting into 3rd and 4th requires a lot of RPM (Unlike a car, you shift from a standstill).

The diffy looks good.
As long as your bands are not "Crumbly" and there is material above the rivets you are golden.
The drums should not be scored......

The cross cuts are done to allow oil to flow in between the drums and the band surface.

Was there and metal junk on the magnetic drain plug ????

Looks like a winner......

Great score.....

Sorry I didn't get a reply back to you as Snowy Rivers! I must have overlooked this somehow. It did not appear that there was that much metal in it at all! I was pleasantly surprised when I peel back cover open and saw that!

I am jealous for sure.....When I yanked the drain plug out of my diffy "Orange watery slop poured forth"
Yes...the gears and parts look great.
From what I can see from the pics...the inner planetary gears look sweet as well.
The small gears near the middle can and do wear over time.....the smaller size of the Bombi (Less weight too) as compared to the much larger machines does not take near the toll on the innards of the diffy.

NOT having to venture into the gear box is a good thing......
They are not particularly hard to work on.....just costly and time consuming.......

Yeah, everyone I've talked to thus far has told me that if my diffy is in good shape then I'm sitting pretty good. I guess it makes up for the amount of rust that is on it! LOL! I'm going to have to reskin the entire thing it's so bad.

Well after some debating, I've decided to go with the Ford 2.3 l for my power plant. The setup I bought came out of a 1978 Ford Courier, I believe. It also came with a JATCO 3N71B automatic transmission.

This is definitely not what everyone else is going with from what I can tell, at least as far as the transmission goes. I'm still in the process of tearing into everything oh, so I guess we will see what we see when we get there! LOL

Nice! the 2.3 is a solid choice, capable of impressive HP numbers and lots of aftermarket support. Its the motor I want to put in mine when the 1.6 gives up the ghost. I know nothing about that trans though...

Yeah, it doesn't sound like too many people know much about that transmission! I figure, what the hell, we'll give her a shot and see what happens!

Let us know on the transmission! If you can get it to fit and mount up, an automatic would be a world of improvement (shifting to 3rd and 4th on our machines is brutal on the clutch)

After rebuilding the 1.6....these engines are tanks! Unless you pull the Hoof governor and over rev....for an hour with no oil or coolant...I’m not sure how you‘d kill this beast!

I agree with you 100% after actually driving my cat I'm happy with it for the most part. I just commented on it in Ezrollers thread. But its pretty hard to come by a 1.6 in my neck of the woods, lots of 2.3 mustangs though, so I would be more inclined to swap it if it ever scatters...lets hope not though!
