NISSAN to close 7 of its 17 Auto Manufacturing Plants

2 major plants in Japan will be the first to close down.

Other plants will be announced later. Currently Nissan has 3 plants in Mexico, 2 in the USA and none in Canada.

Given the tariffs, I would expect that the US plants will remain open, but would not be surprised if 1 of the Mexican plants shutters.

"Tough, But Necessary": Nissan To Shutter Flagship Japanese Plant By March 2028

Nissan Motor will cease vehicle production at its flagship Oppama plant in Kanagawa by March 2028, a move CEO Ivan Espinosa called "a tough but necessary decision" and one of "significant pain," according to Nikkei
Production of current and upcoming models will shift to Nissan Motor Kyushu in Fukuoka, cutting manufacturing costs by an estimated 15%. Espinosa explained, "We are aiming to reduce fixed costs while increasing plant utilization rates to 100%."
The company also plans to end production at the Shonan plant, operated by its subsidiary Nissan Shatai, following the discontinuation of NV200 orders by March 2027.
Nikkei reports that Oppama’s 2,400 employees will remain employed until the closure. Nissan pledged to communicate employment plans clearly and work with unions once decisions are finalized. . .
The closure is part of Nissan’s broader Re:Nissan restructuring plan, announced in May, which includes reducing global assembly plants from 17 to 10 and cutting 20,000 jobs by March 2028. The company plans to lower non-China production capacity from 3.5 million to 2.5 million vehicles annually.
He confirmed no further plant closures in Japan beyond Oppama and Shonan, with any international changes to be announced later. . .
 
I haven't followed Nissan at all. How did they lose their way? Back around 1990 I had a brown 5 speed 4 cylinder Sentra with a brown plastic interior and brown plastic carpet. Roll up windows. Had air that worked.
I could not kill that car. I finally ended up giving it to a neighbor that needed a car badly.
 
Honestly I think most if not all manufacturers are getting near the brink. Cost of production is getting out of hand and they just keep adding more options to the vehicles to try justifying the crazy prices, eventually people are going to run out of money.

To my mind, NISSAN is the "also ran" car company.

They have nothing special, nothing is the best. Everything is basically competent. And usually a bit cheaper than Toyota and Honda. But also more expensive than Korean and discount American cars.

So it is sort of mid priced, but low featured, basic. Just not quite.

When I needed a bang around pick up for house flipping a Nissan Frontier long bed crew cab turned out to be the ideal truck. Poor fuel economy, but a responsive engine. Turning radius of a school bus, comfortable enough as a road vehicle. I simply was tired of driving it and downsized to a brand spanking new Honda Ridgeline a couple years ago, which at significantly more $$$$, is just nicer in every way I can describe, objectively and subjectively . . . except the bed has shrunk from 6'2" to 5'2", yet the bed is easier to access, has a large hidden lockable compartment UNDER the bed, and is significantly wider, so even with the loss of length the bed is better.

I think my experience is the problem with the entire line of Nissans. Low entry $$$, but nothing is great. Seems like they probably get very few 'repeat' buyers.

Remember when Datsun was the primary Japanese import? At the time it seemed like the top of the roost. For some reason it changed it's name to Nissan. Then Toyota, Honda, Mazda and others found their way to the US market.
 
The last 3 new trucks I bought were frontiers, 2- 4 bangers and 1- v6 that I am currently still driving, it has 265 k on it.
Problems include, new clutch around 200k, I do a lot of towing with it and 200k is normal, just rebuilt the rear end at 260k, that’s normal too. Also replaced a bunch of sensors over its lifetime, crank position, cam position and VVT actuators. Was that too much in 265 k miles?? I don’t think so, especially how much punishment it has taken.
