New Electric Vehicle proposed law will eliminate most vehicles from $7500 tax credit

The new bill would encourage manufacturers to use battery components sourced in the US. Of course the problem with that is that you can't get a license past the environmentalists, courts, etc to mine products like lithium here in the USA.

If tax credits are effectively eliminated then an electric car would have an average cost of $15,000 more than an average gas powered car. Even with somewhat higher maintenance costs for a gas powered car (oil changes, repairs, etc) that is a substantial barrier for most consumers and the price difference is too great for most buyers.

Manchin-Schumer EV tax credit disqualifies almost all existing electric vehicles: Automakers

The bill further aims to encourage domestic EV production

Electric vehicle manufacturers say a proposal to extend tax breaks to purchasers of electric vehicles would not include most of the models currently on the market.
A budget reconciliation package, which Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin announced in late July, includes a proposal to extend a $7,500 tax credit toward the purchase of an electric vehicle. . .
Manufacturers of electric cars argue, however, that sourcing requirements in the bill to make an EV eligible for the credit are so strict as to exclude nearly all of the existing models, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. The bill further aims to encourage domestic EV production by requiring the domestic acquisition of key components in order to get the subsidy.
Only EVs manufactured in the U.S. will be eligible for the tax credit. Moreover, it places strict regulations on the car's battery material sourcing to make the entire car qualify. The WSJ pointed out that almost any EV with battery parts from China would be excluded. . .
The average cost of purchasing an EV is roughly $60,000 while a traditional gas-run car costs roughly $45,000. The $7,500 tax credit aims to encourage motorists to purchase EVs by reducing the overall cost of doing so, though the remaining $7,500 difference would still buy 1,500 gallons of gas at $5 per gallon and allow motorists to travel nearly 40,000 miles before incurring the same cost, assuming the gas car achieved an average 25.7 miles per gallon, as documented by the Department of Energy.

Government subsidies for EV's is actually bad aw. It encourages the purchase of a single purpose vehicle that will overload our electrical grid. What kind of logic perpetuates the myth, that EV's, with all their limitations should and must dominate our personal auto fleet?

The $7,500 tax credit doesn't give the purchaser a real choice between the myriad of vehicles that meet their needs in gas powered propulsion verses electric. So, this comparison isn't even a fair one on one comparison.

I believe our government should stop giving away money that allows big companies to benefit from what politicians do to motivate citizens decisions to buy one product over another. IT is a corruption of the free enterprise system that allows competition for the consumer dollar, based on providing quality and choices to meet need.

To put it simply, motivating me, the consumer, to buy an inferior product is simply not the responsibility of our government. In my humble opinion, it is bad governance. Maybe it is time to put an end to it.

But given all of that...

Tesla has a 5 year agreement for 50% of the Piedmonte mines South Caralina hard rock mine of 80% lithium ore.
The Austin Tx facility includes a lithium refining facility the first in the USA.

They will be the first with an entirely USA made battery. Elon is years ahead of the competition. :whistling:

My bet is when the Democrats realize that they will change the rules and let Chinese GM products in for leftist Mary Barra.
