Marijuana legalization to become a Senate Priority

Not posting this in the political area because this is a bi-partisan issue, although it is the Democrats that are leading in the US Senate on the issue. I'm posting it here because it seems like it is more of a crime, drug, recreational and even economic discussion rather than one of pure politics.

Marijuana is a lucrative business, legal in some state, illegal in others, and illegal at the national level. Why not legalize it, tax it like alcohol and sell it in licensed stores to adults who want to use it? As long as the taxes are not too high there will be little criminal incentive to compete at street level, which will take money out of the pockets of criminals. If the stores are run like licensed liquor stores, with access limited to adults, it also provided a sound economic opportunity to folks to open up businesses.

And then there are the medical uses for it, relieving pain, etc.

Thoughts?

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Thursday announced on the floor that he will use his clout to make legislation ending the federal prohibition on marijuana a top priority.
Marijuana is currently listed as a Schedule 1 banned drug under the Controlled Substances Act, and an estimated 40,000 Americans are in jail because of cannabis-related offenses, according to Forbes.
Schumer on Thursday said he will throw his political weight behind legalizing marijuana, which was declared illegal on a nationwide basis in 1937.
“I am the first majority leader to say it’s time to end the federal prohibition on marijuana and as majority leader, I’m going to push this issue forward and make it a priority for the Senate,” Schumer said in his morning remarks.
Schumer doubled down on remarks a day earlier at a press conference introducing a draft of the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act, which would lift the federal prohibition on cannabis and allow state-compliant cannabis businesses to have access to financial services such as bank accounts and loans. ...
“It makes eminent sense to legalize marijuana,” Schumer said on Wednesday. “A number of states, including my own of New York, just legalized recently. The doom and gloom predictions haven't materialized in any of these states. And as more and more states legalize marijuana, it's time for our federal cannabis law to catch up.” ...
“At long last it would take steps to right the wrongs of the failed war on drugs,” he said, noting it would remove marijuana from the federal list of controlled substances and expunge the criminal records of those with low-level marijuana offenses.

Not many people die from pot but a lot die from alcohol and 480,000 a year from tobacco, including 40,000 from second hand smoke.

Gateway drug? How about alcohol? How may people used alcohol before pot???

Nonsense all of it. This isn't about personal freedoms or safety, as much as it is about Taxing and Control. As President Reagan once said, "If you cannot control it ,Tax it!"

And majority leader Chuck Scheemer damn well knows it.

Like the tail wagging the dog. It's about time. It should have been decriminalized decades ago. But, like Franc suggested, they are not doing it due to common sense, it's all about the tax dollars they are missing out on. Money money money money.

The best known gateway drug is soda. Marijuana is way down on that list.

From what I know, marijuana is already legalized in some states. However, I also support your opinion. I consider that marijuana should be legalized in the whole country. Personally, I am a big fan of CBD gummies. They help me sleep better. And to be honest, I can not imagine what going to sleep without this supplement will feel like. Anyway, I really hope that the Senate will approve this law. Maybe one day, we will have marijuana legalized in the whole country.

I'm sure the alcohol and tobacco industries are behind pot being illegal because they conflict with their products.

They're smart enough to get in the marijuana game themselves.

I saw some people in California back in the 1970s quit smoking and/or drinking by smoking pot instead.

It could be a conflict of interest to them

It's great when they come to work high as a kite and slow as a snail. Wonderful stuff.

It was a big deal here when it was legalized , but hardly makes the news today, personally I don't care either way. The idea the government can squeeze out the criminal suppliers didn't quite happen , multiple taxes on the product made that a hard thing to do. Haven't seen any new stats on this subject, but doubt they will change.

It's been legal up here in Canada for a few years now. Never thought I'd see the day where there was a pot shop on nearly every second block.

I used to be dead set against the stuff and vowed to never touch it. After my accident in 2015, I was on oxys for 13 months for pain. It did nothing but leave me in a zombie state most of the day. They switched me over to lyrica which also did nothing for pain but caused me to gain 40lbs in a matter of months. I stopped it and got onto medical marijuana. I take a pill in the morning and have a vape pen for later in the evening. It actually works and I have lost 50lbs since starting it. The pill is a slow release and lasts all day without any side effects or buzz.

It has it's uses, and has helped my bed-ridden mother greatly. Fantastically actually. And she used to scold me for hanging with those types when I was in HS. Ya, I toked back then.
I am sick and tired of these lazy asses who have money to buy weed, and then come to work higher than a kite and are, like, wow, man, you're firing me, why? It's legal. Well so the phuk is drinking whiskey, but you get fired when you come to work drunk.
Recreational should be banned. Sorry.
Medicinal, fine, but real medicinal. Not sign for a card and get high the rest of your life.

Weird. We are running out of oil, energy and money. the border is porous as a sieve and bleeding sick people with no means of economic support.
Our major cities are full of homeless, and crime ridden.
If it is somehow legal to burn down our cities in some sort of protest, then why is marijuana even on the agenda.
And yet this perennial issue is somehow important to the Senate?

We need anew Senate.

We need the USA back.
I'm afraid we are past the tipping point. 5 years, call us Venezuela. Our only hope hope is the owners of guns, and their love of the constitution.
