Looking at buying a Compact Electric SUV, why is Tesla not on the "best list?"

Near as I can tell, we drive a LOT in my family.

I'll be in the car for 6 hours tomorrow. Going out to one of my properties, it is a 3 hour drive each way, all interstate driving, 360+ miles. Friday I'll be going out to Notre Dame and back, that will be about 200 miles including the errands that need to be run with Dasha, lunch with some of the ND fencers, etc. Today was Chicago to home then P.T. & fencing, short day, only 100-ish miles. Saturday will be a round trip to O'Hare airport, 62 miles each way, plus whatever else needs to be done.

This week will easily be a 1000 miles. That will be higher than normal, but not all that unusual.

Last week I was at Notre Dame 3 times and Chicago once.

Fencing competitive season starts soon, I'll be at Purdue 1 or 2 times a week (68 miles each way), plus Chicago (50-ish miles), plus the high school 2 or 3 days each week (26 miles each way) and then a tournament on the weekend . . . and yes, sometimes I am in 2 places each day, one early, the other late. Purdue weekday practices are 9pm to Midnight and High school practices are 3pm to 6pm. So going from the high school, which is 26 miles northwest of my home to Purdue, which is 68 miles due south of my home, it actually not all that unusual.
 
I am RETIRED. keep annual mileage for each of my vehicles. I've never added up total miles driven until reading this thread.
I'm not near as busy as Bob. But still last year my wife and I put 28,696 miles on our vehicles.
Plus another 492 miles on the off road side by side, plus 41 hours on the boat, 21 hours on the tractor and 40 hours on the Scag ZTR.
A whole lot of seat time. ;D

during my working years, I did a lot of dumb stuff -
Newport RI to Phila/Baltimore 'for the weekend'
Bostson MA to Phila/Baltimore 'for the weekend'
Jacksonville to Baltimore 'for the weekend' - 14 hrs one way
Charleston SC to Balt/Phila 'for the weekend'
then my daily commute was 10 miles R/T, but I did...
Valley Forge to Altoona PA/Hornell NY/Allentown PA . . . multiple times/year
hen there was....
Valley Forge to Stamford CT 3x/week
and then there was . . .
Valley Forge to Vineland NJ 5x/week

not everyone drives/commutes <30 miles per day . . .
if that fits, EVs are indeed a viable option.
heck, living in Germany, many months of the year I could/did ride a foot peddle bike to work - 15km/one way . . .

and if a gallon of milk is a 30 mile trip - that local mileage piles up right quick . . .

city dwellers are "prime meat" for EVs - they don't go very far . . . okay, drive around a city, you see block after block after block of parked cars . . . who's gonna' put a charging station every 30' on every block?
basically the today's technology exists - but it cannot solve the issues.
if city dwellers could pull into a "fuel station" and "fill up" their battery just like filling up their gas tank, it would work - but thinking people will go to a fuel station and twiddle their thumbs for hours to overnight . . . not ever gonna' happen.

is the best it gets and it's still not going to work for the masses parking on the street.

And I intended to mention in my post that I'm retired like you and Bob. But still put a lot of miles on my vehicles. I'm 20 to 30 miles from various towns around here so mileage does add up. Plus we've traveled more now that we have some free time.

But even my house could make use of an EV for going to town trips. Then charge it every night in the garage. However, I have no interest in either an EV or hybrid at this point, even though they could work for me. I rarely buy new. I prefer slightly used for a substantial discount from what you'd pay for new.

I had a 2004 Toyota Solara. Great car. Had it for 13 years and put 200k on it. It still ran great. Sold it for 4500. It still had value. As someone mentioned earlier the value of a 13 year old EV with 200k on it is an unknown at this point. Will they even make it to 200k? Eventually I'd guess the EV prices will come down and hopefully they'll have the reliability of todays ICE's. I plan to sit on the sidelines and watch rather than gamble on one at this point.

Got home from my roughly 360 mile trip today. Left the house with the Audi diesel at 8am. Had a 1/2 tank of fuel. Drove to New Castle, IN and back. Stopped for fuel about 15 miles from home. 17.03 gallons went into the 18 gallon capacity tank. Took 5 minutes to refuel the car. When I pulled into the garage the dashboard said I had enough fuel remaining in the tank to drive another 725 miles. Trip average was 40.9mpg. AC was running. Speed limit was ignored. Paid $4.05.9/gallon for diesel.
