Yup. Was walking up my back stairs in the dark this morning, and my flip flop caught the top step which ripped off part of my big toenail. I did a faceplant into my recycling bin (which was full), so it made quite a ruckus.

Gawd it hurt. I about passed out, probably because I was thinking about bamboo chutes under the finger nail thing. After digging out the wood chips from under what was left of the nail, I washed it out and dressed it with 2 band-aids and some electrical tape.

And in a week, I'll be in Cozumel, ostensibly to go diving. Any ideas on how to make this heal up a little faster?

OUCH , Bummer , I,d boil it out with peroxide , but some anti bacterial cream on it , wipe it off & paint it with liquid skin . Works for me .

It,ll only sting like hell for a few seconds :w00t2:

Brown drawing salve in case you have any paint or small wood left under there. The salt water will help it heal quicker than anything. Stock up on pain pills for the next few days. I hate toe injuries!

Ouch... sorry to hear that JPR.
Best advice I can give is take me along I will bring you cerveza and go and do your diving for you.
If you lend me your camera I will even shoot a few photos for you......Oh can I keep the camera for my Roatan dive trip in Feb?

Heal fast my friend...ask PG for advise....Muleman will have you rubbing some kind of critter liniment on it.

Wow! Thanks for the offer!

Tell ya what. Get me down to Roatan and I'll teach you, underwater, how to use it. This is your first dive trip in quite a while, yes?

My advise... You're over 40... quit wearing flip-flops. Oh, and scrap those black socks you wear with them.

:hide:

Thank you! :whistling:

I only wear them around the house, not out to Wal-Marts. I also don't wear baseball caps backwards, or put gel in what's left of my hair. And for Mr. Nay:

Ow, man.

Sounds like you are on the right track with keeping it clean and tightly wrapped. Maybe some type of neosporin on it to help keep it disinfected?

You've probably seen this already?

Sorry about the injury. Use a drawing salve to make sure no splinters or other foreign material is embedded. Hydrogen peroxide the hell out of it, then hit with an AB cream.
And quit trying to kick Mrs. jpr while you're on the steps.

If I tried to kick who used to be Mrs. JPR, y'all wouldn't have to endure my obnoxious posts, coz I'd be dead.:w00t2:

Show me the tootsie Jim, then we'll go from there.

Ok, but I have to warn you. It's pretty gross, but after I took PB's advice:

Keep it wrapped and treated with an antibiotic cream. No brainer.
If you're going to be in the water (and it sounds like you will be) wear a gel toe (condom) cap, then remove it and re-wrap your toe daily.

What remains of the nail will probably fall off eventually.
Honestly, Jim.. electrical tape? ;)

As a nurse, you should applaud me for my resourcefulness. It was bleeding, but I couldn't keep the bandage on. I didn't have any medical tape, so I used what I thought was the next best thing. My first idea was duct tape.:whistling:

I started this thread before I removed my "handyman dressing." As it turns out, it's not that bad. I'll stay barefoot til the morning, then smear some Neosporin on it and wrap it with some medical stuff. Mesh drywall tape should do the trick. It breathes, right?

A clean tp bandage and 4 band-aids would have worked too.:whistling:

I'm glad to hear it's not as bad as you'd thought.

Go to Walgreens and get a toe protector for your trip to Meh-hee-co.
There may be something in the water down there.

Speaking of.. have you ever experienced Montezuma's Revenge?

Yup. Had a coke with ice in Cancun proper (not the tourist zone). A coupla Imodiums, and I was good as gold (or brown as it were).:w00t2:

Never have a drink with ice, or eat soup in restaurants or consume anything that contains THE water.
Do like I did.
Eat junk food and drink bottled sodas only, you'll come back fat and happy.
Without a toenail.
