HDTV - Wow!

OK, so I'm a little late to this party compared to many of you, but this week I went out and purchased a Vizio 50" plasma TV at Costco. The prices have finally dropped to the point where I was willing to spend the cash...this TV was $999. It's a 720P display, but I'm not convinced 1080P adds any discernible quality, and it was not worth the $400 price difference.

I actually had a budget of about $2K when I started shopping, so I was very happy to find how low the prices were. Since I had a little extra cash, I let the wife convince me to buy a $500 entertainment center to place the TV in, so yesterday I spent 6 hours assembling a Sauder entertainment center that I think has more parts than the Space Shuttle. I do have to say that in the category of RTA furniture, Sauder sure seems to have their act together...very clear directions, no missing parts, and the finished product has a good leve lof quality to it.

After getting everything put together and the TV unpacked and plugged in, I decided to just try the OTA signal from the old antenna on my roof. SHOCK! I actually get quite a few digital signals from Chicago and Rockford. I thought for sure I was way too far from both to receive a signal. I was able to watch the Olympics and the Bears game last night.

Totally awesome!!!

The DishNetwork guy will bhe here this afternoon to upgrade my DVR to HD, so I will have lots more HD content tonight.

I love it!

Dave,

I am assuming that picture was taken with your new camera?? Looks good if so. :thumb:

Nice looking set up you have there Dave. Congrats. :thumb:
I curious, what made you decide on plasma? Is there a noticeable quality difference?

To my eyes there was. I spent almost 30 minutes at Costco walking back and forth between this Plasma and an LCD by the same manufacturer, and I decided that I like the Plasma better. The LCD was showing uneven blacks as well as motion lag and color fringing. The Plasma was a much smoother picture, and seemed much more natural to me.

What you described is exactly what I would have expected. LCD does not play high speed motion as well. Plasmas use more electricity and are much heavier too. The only reason I went LCD over plasma is the DVR... our 5 y/o pauses the TV a LOT and we would have had burn in the first week we had it. You won't have that issue because you get to train yours right the first time. I too was SHOCKED at the picture quality of the OTA antenna. Our locals are not in HD with Dishnetwork yet so I have been watching the off the OTA. I miss the pause and rewind though.:bonk:
