Fire

Not sure if anyone has been following this. There is currently a couple forest fires burning out of control in Fort McMurray Alberta. This place was hit a couple years ago as well. A lot of people I used to work with in the mill moved here to work in the oil fields when the mill closed. One guy I know lost his house along with everything they owned in the last round.

Nope. The place is going down in flames quicker than the white house. Not good. And up until recently this place was booming. I heard stories of mobile homes selling for $250000 for a basic shack. Anything with 4 walls and a roof lists for over 200g there. All because of the oil field.

So sad to see this. It reminds me of the time several years ago that the two fires to the north and west of me merged and then they went all the way to to Malibu and the ocean. It was really strange to see homes burning on the beach.

Is there any chance of getting this monster under control?

They are throwing everything they have at the fire including calling in the world's largest water bomber. I can only imagine what it would be like to have 80000 people all scrambling to leave with nothing but the clothes on their backs and whatever fuel they have in the tank. I'm reading stories of thousands of people stranded along the highway as their vehicles ran out of gas.

I'm also hearing of countless people from the south loading up as much gas as they can in tanks and heading north to rescue those who are stranded. I'm guessing it's about a 5 hour drive south to get to the next gas station and those are running out of gas by now.

The pictures horrify me....all effected are in my prayers.

thanks for the update Brian.

Somehow that doesn't surprise me. American news typically ignores the rest of the world.

It was on the news last night here in Los Angeles. Maybe because we have had fires like that here.

Now the hard part. All of the ones who escaped to the north are currently being escorted in groups of 50 vehicles back through the burned remains of their city to head south as another fire was approaching where they evacuated to in the north. So they essentially have to drive right by their burned out homes without being allowed to stop and if their homes are still standing they can't stop to get supplies. Gotta be hard to go through that. Insult to injury.

It's been on every newscast I've seen of FOX here in Arizona.

It would sure be nice if the USA could somehow offer some kind of help for them.
Arizona has some great wildfire-crews and we help other states and they help us.
I am just wondering if the USA could offer to arrange some kind of help like that and use something like National Guard transports to take them up there.
Just an idea what do you all think?

Does anyone have a link to a map of that area?
I just can't get an idea of where that is.

I do believe when they had fires a while back down in the states there were Canadian fire crews down there assisting.

Yes. It's way west of me. Still. The weather here generally comes from the west. I can see how it started. We had a wicked thunderstorm roll through at supper yesterday. It only lasted a few minutes but there were violent winds and lightning strikes. When it passed the temperature rose from 17c to nearly 30c. The strong winds stayed all evening. I can imagine if this weather cell hit out there a few days ago and it was already pretty dry then it's easy to see how such a big fire could spread

Just found out that we are now in a restricted fire zone. There is a decent size fire just west of us on the Manitoba Ontario border that resulted in a small evacuation.

Holy crap. This isn't good. We just got back from our 4 day weekend fishing trip. Of course it was really dry and there was a fire ban in place. We made it home alright. Only hours after we came through town where I grew up 3 separate fires started. One north of town where I just drove through. Water bombers are on scene as I type this.

My parents were still at the camp for one more night with our American friend. Apparently they had to make a quick exit and packed what they could and evacuated to another town via bush road. With whatever they could load quickly.

We finally got the rain we needed. It's been raining on and off for 4 days. The fire bans have been lifted all across northwestern Ontario. It was a very close call for my hometown. At least we left camp when we did. Otherwise it would have meant a 3 hr detour over rough bush roads to bypass the town.

Thank God for rain! Having been through many fires I know what it feels like. As a matter of fact we have one burning right now in the wine country of Temecula which is south of me.
