Do you take your hat or cap off when you eat?

Funny question? When I was a kid it was unthinkable to eat without taking off whatever you were wearing on your head. I think it is in respect of the food you were about to eat. I grew up in an "unreligious family" We newer said grace before a meal. Just attended church for christenings weddings and funurals.
But I still react when I see people eating with their hats on. We were not allowed to wear anything on our heads in classes at school eather.
Probably silly? I am probably getting old and grumpy.
The same thing goes for putting seeds in the ground, look at old pics, the seeding man is always bare headed.

Interesting. Never heard that about the "seeding man".

Farmers here wear hats to keep their head from getting sun burned.

Maybe they take their hats off when seeding while driving their air conditioned cab tractor?

I always thought you took your hat off at the table 'cause your mom told you to. :confused2:

I believe, taking your hat off falls into the "common courtesy/good manners" category and has little to do with religion.

However, just like religion, good manners and common courtesy are dwindling in popularity these days.

I would never wear a hat in a proper restaurant or at a formal meal but I routinely wear my hat when eating at McDonald's or the likes.

For those of us who are follicly challenged, wearing a hat this time of year is a necessity. After having done so outside, most times one will then display so called "hat hair", which seems to get worse the less hair one has (contrary to logic). For that reason, I will usually continue to wear my hat inside. If going to a nicer-type establishment or occasion, I will refrain from wearing a hat at all. Those occasions only occur a few times a year, however.

Aw Bone! :pat: Please don't tell me you got a comb-over!

Shave it bro; you'll look & feel much better. :poke:

In the Marine Corps any time you walk through a threshold you put your cover on or take it off depending on if you or going in or out, if you are not under arms.

When I was a kid it was considered impolite to wear a hat in the house. I still take it off walking into church during the week or something.

I will if I am with others, sometimes I take my hat off when I'm talking to someone else too, just doesnt feel right talking from under a hat.

I have the opposite problem to you Bone, gotta wear a hat to keep my hair under control :D Maybe I could sell you some hair to make a wig, I'll even pick the bugs out if its a good price! :yum:

Once upon a time (in my teens and 20's), I wore my hair down to my shoulders. Now, my hair is short, but my wife does not want me to shave my head. There have been times when I have come close to having my head shaved at work (several guys have shaved heads there).

We were always taught to take our hats off. I guess out of habit I still do today except for when I am alone I may leave it on.

Neither had I ever heard of the "seed man" removing his hat.
And you never spoke to a lady without taking your hat off.:tiphat:

Entering a church or any other religious building ? During a funural ? When a hearse passes by ( on the way to a funural) you shall stop whatever you are doing, take your cap of, and stand in a basic position until it is out of sight.
(this goes for rural places and local roads, not many do this today)

I don't wear a hat.

But I was taught that you take your hat off when you talk to people (like Mith indicated), you take your hat off when you enter a building (any and every building, religious or not), you take your hat off when saying the Pledge of Allegiance, at an outdoor memorial service, when the Star Spangled Banner is sung, and you never eat with your hat on. It is simply a matter of respect to remove your hat.

Wearing hats and saluting indoors are two of my pet peeves whenever there is a military scene in a movie. I wish they would get it right, it's not complicated.

I tip my to you BERG for such a good question! It simply a sign of respect. It's an old English custom where hats are tipped, (or doffed) slightly lifting the hat off your forehead, when meeting a lady (remove your hat if you stop to talk), or to "say" to anyone, male or female – thank you, excuse me, hello, goodbye, you’re welcome or how do you do.

Tipping of the hat is a conventional gesture of politeness. This hat tipping custom has the same origin as military saluting, which came from the raising of medieval Knights face visors to show friendliness.

Hats are worn less now, but at the turn of the 20th century, all adults wore hats whenever they left the house. It was a matter of good personal hygiene, since hats were a protection from industrial dirt.

Hats are removed when inside, except for places that are akin to public streets, like lobbies, corridors, and crowded elevators (non-residential). In a public building (where there are no apartments) the elevator is considered a public area.

You may choose to remove your hat in a public elevator, but in the presence of a lady your hat must be removed.

A gentleman takes off his hat and holds it in his hand when a lady enters the elevator in any building that can be classified as a dwelling such as an apartment house or hotel. He puts it on again in the corridor.

It's therefore become a mark of respect to take them off during a meal, funerals, church service, when you greet someone in the street, or any other occasion when you want to signify that you respect the person. That's where the term, "I take my hat off to you" originated.

I when the Star Spangled Banner is sung

That depends. In Scouts, we will wear our hats during the pledge or the star spangled banner. But, it is a Scout hat, and is an official part of a complete uniform. If the Scout has on some other hat, then it is removed.
And, when out of uniform, the hat ALWAYS comes off.

I did a "Doh!" moment last year. I was at a 9/11 remembrance, with an engine company. Same thing; full Fire Dept uniform with hat. Scouts did the color gaurd. When we came to attention, I did a Scout salute(three fingers), instead of the regular salute... Nobody else notice, and I did catch myself part way through the pledge. I got confused between my fire dept stuff and my asst Scoutmaster stuff:pat:

Hat ALWAYS comes off when at the meal table. there are times though, during wild hair moments, when it would probably be better to leave the hat on:smileywac Still, it comes off. Or, at a funeral etc. It's a matter of simple respect.

Has anyone noticed the number of young women that are wearing baseball caps today, and they never take them off. My vet has a tech that wears a baseball cap with the brim pointed to the rear. No one has ever seen her without it in all the years that she worked there. This bugs me a lot... must be an old age thing..

What's wrong with this picture?
Graduation Day Parris Island 2003 We had to rush to get Mike's gear, because his DIs were immediately picking up a new platoon. He forgot to remove his cover in the rush. He caught it right after this picture.

Good pic Hutch. At least they didn't make him repeat boot camp over again! :D :yankchain:

Would you really care if a cop or EMT did not remove his/her hat inside your home when responding to an emergency? This time of year particularly, many of us wear hats since it is raining and cold. I understand the good manners thing and all, but if is a choice between hat manners and comfort on the job, the hat stays on!:moon:

Wearing them backwards does bug me, but right way up front, long hair with the hair in the back opening can be sexy:4_11_9:

Notice that Mike assumed the position of attention for the photo. Man, I still remember those days! It was drilled into you so hard it took about a month after graduation to stop. :smileywac

Hey Hutch, is he back home?

Those beds look a little skinny and short. Where is the night stand for your glass of water, clock radio, and book? And no private rooms!? I guess in a way, it is a private room.....:yum:

Yeah, Mike walked around like he had a broom stick up his butt for about a month. I think he even ironed his underwear for a while. I guess there's just enough room on those cots for a recruit and his rifle.
CB, he's a Reserve 2146 (Main Battle Tank Technician). Corporal now and due to pick up Sergeant. He did the Iraq thing in Fallujah and Habbaniyah last year. He also served as a tank crewman (loader), and a machine gunner on a 7 ton while there. He says he doesn't care to go back to Iraq but will volunteer for Afghanistan if they pull the Marines from Iraq and send 'em there. Hutch

You guys have no idea how good those racks feel when you finally get to spend a few hours in them.

If I may speak from a women's point of view, on this. I think its very sexy when a man does take off his hat for common courtesy/good manners. A lot of men nowadays have no respect and could care less. Which make me respect the ones that do, remove them even more. But of course if I had to pick between a EMT removing his hat in my house or saving my life... yeah, I would go with the saving my life part. :)
