Going to the courthouse soon to get my digital ID driver's license changed back to a state driver's license.

I thought all states were issuing the new license no matter what when you renewed. I suppose it depends on your state but is it truly an option?

Where I am, I "think" they may offer a digital ID (that's stored on your phone) but it's for very limited uses (like getting into a bar).
For traffic stops and such, you still need to product your physical ID.
I personally don't see a need for a digital ID as an option. Just take a picture of the front and back of your driver's license. That should be enough. Heck, I rented a car once just by producing a picture of my DL.

When my DL expires, I will get the RealID on it. For places that require more than a DL, I just use my passport.

On some northern border States, you can get an "enhanced" ID which (I think is RealID) plus it's accepted for crossing the Canadian border.

What is the upgraded version of the drivers license that is required to fly? That is what I was intending to ask about.

So I'm asking if you have Real ID, can you go to your DMV and request a regular license without the Real ID extras?
I thought that is what Kirk was saying he was going to do, I mixed up digital ID and Real ID.
We have our passports so no problem or need for real ID but I think when you renew your license the Real ID is all that is available.

No clue if they even offer a digital ID in my state???
I used the wrong name. All states nationwide had a movement to update all licsense to hold more info and a stamp that allowed you to use it as ID so you could board a commercial aircraft. I'm asking if you don't want that extra stamp of approval will they issue a basic license like prior to this requirement. I do not think that is an option but asking if anyone knows for sure.
Sorry for the confusion.

Ohio's New Driver License and Identification Card

The federal government will no longer consider standard driver licenses and identification cards as sufficient forms of identification for air travel. TSA (Transportation Security Administration) will require a federally-compliant driver license, identification card, or other acceptable form of identification such as a U.S. passport or military ID to fly within the U.S.

I found the answer. We do have a choice.

Compliant

Customers can choose between a Compliant DL-ID and a Standard DL-ID. Choose the card that works best for you:

Compliant Card

Compliant Card

Meets national travel security requirements. A federally-compliant form of identification will be required to fly commercially or to access federal facilities or military bases.

A Compliant Card requires more identity documents than a Standard Card. You must provide documents to prove the following:

  • full legal name
  • date of birth
  • Social Security number
  • proof of Ohio residency
  • proof of legal presence

Standard Card

Does not meet national travel security requirements. A Standard Card will need to be used in conjunction with a passport or other acceptable documents approved by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in order to fly commercially or to access a federal facility or military base. Please see www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification for more information.

A Standard Card does not require additional identity documents, unless the DL-ID is being issued for the first time.
Both Compliant and Standard cards allow you to prove your identity for tasks such as buying alcohol, obtaining social services, or registering to vote. Only a driver license can authorize the operation of a motor vehicle.
