China Has Begun to Dump the Dollar

I don't get your reasoning that gold is worthless. throughout history gold has always been valuable. It is rare. You can't create it out of thin air. It is a valid means of trading. How do you suggest men trade value with each other? If you have a service to provide, how are you going to get paid?
Men need a medium to trade between each other.

My point is it has value because you believe it has. You know you can go into a store and buy something with a dollar too and it is based on faith as well. No country has been on a gold standard in many here life times. Gold was the accepted to have value in the old world but none in the New World until the Europeans showed up on the shores here. Indians had an economy also where they traded goods. The barter system is still alive and well in the US as in many other places on this planet today.

I barter with my neighbors in a lot of ways. Those who dwell on money will suffer when TSHTF. I hope it don't happen but the way things are going it does not look good.

The barter system is fine. However, if you want something that a man has, be it a service or product, and all you offer is your tons of corn - or stock piles of amo.. and that persons has plenty of that - you are out of luck.

You see.. Corn and bullets can be produced just as easily as paper money. But gold can not.

It's the rarity that gives it value.

Well if I have 2 tons of corn and a couple cows and you have 10 oz. of gold and i don't want your gold you will go hungry. Oh, and a few pounds of lead and the powder to push it guarantees I will keep my corn and cows.:hammer:

True. However who said anyone was coming to take what you have by force? I was talking trade between rational men. But if all you have is 2 cows and a ton of corn and lots of amo.. it's gonna take a while before you eat some of that steak.
:yum:

Ok I will tell you about a guy I knew in Texas. He wanted this guys bass boat. So he started with a CB radio for some other thing, followed by another well guess what he go the guys bass boat, he traded a truck for it. He didn't have what the guy wanted but he new how to keep trading till he did have it. That is how the barter system does work and always have. Very much like our system, with the short cut of money.

Gold is only good if someone wants it. If things went down the tubes, and I had food stored for a limited time span, you won't have enough gold to get any. Guns and bullets would make much more sense for trading stock, you can hunt food with them or protect what you have with them.

IN a perfect world where there is no distress, then gold as a form of barter, trade or whatever you want to call it, makes sense.

In a distressed time, having gold only means you are going to get robbed by those that think it has some kind of value because they don't have anything of value... not to mention, be pretty hungery...

Thats where I get into my cow costume and steal all your corn :smile:

:yum::yum::yum:
Careful Sush or you may be missing a few steaks off the hind 1/4 of that costume and your corn will leave a trail behind you as you exit.:doh:

Never mind the fact that gold is heavy if you have more than a couple of pounds of it as well as harder to move when in a hurry if you have a lot. Non perishable foods, guns or other hunting weapons are a better bet if things got really bad. Besides the fact are in a world like Mad Max my guess is 70% to 90% of the population would parish within the first year. People have forgotten how to survive without their modern conveniences and those left would have ultimate power for the most part.
