CF moto

I'm back to using the flat deck trailer for the sxs as the snowmobile trailer was needed to move my snowmobiles from where they were sitting in storage.

I used my trusted old Winchester 2200 12ga for old times sake.

This culvert gave me a little struggle to get over as I ended up high centered on my way back over it and had to use the winch cable for the first time this season.

I went to check out the newly repaired bridge over one of the snowmobile trails. This bridge basically cut our snowmobile trail system in half last season as far as grooming and forced us to use an active single lane logging road for 13 km to detour around.

I use an app called GEOTRACKER to track my motions in the woods. Even without cell service, it works showing me exactly where I am which is a good thing as I normally cover 80 to 100km while out hunting.

I'm at 6500km on the cfmoto and she is getting a new set of rear wheel bearings and brake pads. The right side had blown completely but not until I got back from hunting a couple weeks ago. It took me 6hrs for one side from start to finish and 3 for the other as I spent half the time trying to figure out a way to get the old bearings out of the spindle using the tools I had. (My buddy has a hydraulic press that would have made it easier)

I had to resort to placing it on the cement and using a larger impact socket the same diameter as the bearings then using a 4 ft sledgehammer after cleaning it with brake fluid and soaking it in penetrating oil. Inserting the new bearing went alright. I had the spindle sitting on the floor with bearing lined up with the opening. A sledgehammer head sitting sideways on the bearing to cover it completely and tapping the hammer with a smaller one to drive it in flush after greasing it. That got me flush with the spindle. To seat it in the final bit so I could reinstall the c clip, I used the old bearing the same diameter for something to tap on with a hammer. It worked perfectly to seat the bearing.

This is the right side new bearing and old.

The left side was still holding but came out in two pieces so it was due to be changed. I got it all back together yesterday but didn't have time to bleed the brakes. I had to remove one of the calipers and take it to the work bench to remove the pads.

Tell me about it. Hopefully the front ones survive a week as I'm heading out for a week moose hunting 3hrs north of here tomorrow afternoon. We had planned on taking the sxs a couple weeks ago when we went up bird hunting for the weekend however that's when I discovered the wheel bearing. At first I thought it was just the brakes until I jacked it up. She's running good now. I bled the brakes this morning. She's all greased up and ready to go.

While I had it apart, I took apart the pins and bushings and cleaned them up before applying new grease before reinstalling the spindles. When I get back from moose hunting, I will tackle the front ones before they leave me stranded.

When we moved to the country, we bought an older plow truck to maintain the driveway. After 3 years, the transmission blew on it so we replaced it with another one. Dealing with an older driveline meant constant maintenance and often I'd be caught with my pants down, so to speak with my plow truck down for maintenance and a snowstorm coming. Meaning I would have to spend $70 on a loader to come in and clean up. I saw a deal on a like new used 72" kolpin plow for a utv before Christmas and picked it up for a backup plow and installed it. After 45 minutes of plowing, my winch became stuck in freewheel mode rendering it useless so I ordered a new one on Amazon and installed it the other day. I will say that I'm very impressed with it. I was of the mindset previously that it would take forever to do everything but in reality, it takes me an hour to plow with the truck and I was done in 1.5 hrs with the sxs and I can get in tighter places with it like the entrances to the garage as I back into the garage then push the snow out.

Fast forward a bit. I've finally encountered my first real head scratcher with the uforce. So here's a list of everything I've done. First, the fuel pump died. I replaced that and was plowing snow when the temperature guage shot up and started flashing. It wasn't overheating. Fan comes on and off like normal. So I changed the temperature sensor at the rad and thermostat. Still doing it. Next, changed the thermostat itself and drained the rad. New antifreeze. Still doing it. Tested the fan, fuses, relays and connections. Still doing it. Only thing is maybe a wire rubbing on the frame 🤔. It runs fine. I booked it for diagnostic at the dealership.

I also changed the drive belt, oil, and greased it up.

I came out to camp yesterday with the intention of going out bird hunting and testing out the sxs as I've been having issues with it. Here's where it got interesting and things went from a good day to a bad day to and even worse day to all good again in a matter of an hour. 🤣

First, the battery light was flashing despite it being fully charged. I pulled over and shut it off. Then it wouldn't start. Totally dead at the starter. Hmmmm. Ok....time to grab my gun and start walking back to the truck. Just then, another truck came along. They gave me a ride back to the truck. One of the guys stayed there. I get to the truck. Drive back to where the sxs was sitting and lined up to winch it onto the trailer. I go to turn the steering and the wheel locked as I had taken the keys out. I searched for the keys and couldn't find them. So the tires were turned slightly and locked. No keys. I put it in neutral and winched it on and drove a bit further down the road to find a place to turn around. I went back to where I started originally and thankfully found the sxs keys sitting on the ground. I put them in and it fired up. I went back to camp and tore into the electrical removing a battery isolator I had installed last fall to run two batteries in the winter. I disconnected everything and set it back to factory. It seems fine now. But I'm still having problems with the temperature guage. The thing starts up and runs fine from cold. Within 2 minutes the temperature guage is flashing. I let it run a good 10-15 minutes sitting idle and the fan eventually kicks in and runs for a bit then shuts down like normal. The engine temperature actually seems fine.

I got the sxs back from the dealership this week. They ran a bunch of tests and basically reset the computer that sends singals to the gauges. I reinstalled the original tires and rims as the swamp lites were getting badly weather cracked and needed to be refilled every week. I listed the old tires and rims for sale as I had no plans on reusing the rims as they are all 11x14 rims. Stock size is 26" tires 9" width on the front. 11" on the rear. The stock rims are actually decent so I'll keep an eye out for a set of used rubber a couple inches taller and mount them on. My dad had given me an atv gun boot years ago. I never got around to mounting it. I was doing some cleaning up around the shop and saw it sitting there. I finally got it mounted. I'd been putting the gun in the passenger side for years as I hunt alone mostly.

I forgot to give an update here. I found the problem with the electrical issues I was having. I suspect there never was an issue with the fuel pump or anything else for that matter.

All of my issues started about the time I first installed the plow. I had also installed a second battery and a battery isolator. At some point I mistakenly loosened a ground bolt on the frame where there's battery terminals. The negative side grounds to the frame. It's been running perfectly since I tightened it. So I can't blame the machine. I've been plowing snow with it for the past month. Even took the plow off last weekend and went for a ride with my wife and friends of ours in theirs.

One winter ride with my wife and even with snowsuits on and full face helmets, the wind coming in from the back and sides made it less enjoyable. Aftermarket accessories for this model are harder to find as they switched to a 600cc and different chassis a couple years later. I did some research and discovered that my machine is the same chassis that yamaha used from 2004-7 on their rhino. I looked up a vinyl rear window for that machine and it cross referenced a cfmoto uforce 800 but not mine. Same identical machine as mine but bigger engine. It was on $75 so I took a chance. It came in today and fit perfectly. I also had some 1/4" plywood and decided to make up some temporary door extensions for this winter to cut down on the wind. The plan is to eventually make a set of full doors.

I just ordered some edge trim to finish off the door panel extensions. The first warm day, I plan on painting them black.

I was feeling slightly better today and able to stand so I headed to the garage with the sxs to paint the doors with black exterior tremclad. Hopefully they're dry by Sunday as we plan an afternoon ride with friends for lunch at a tavern. Daytime temperatures are above freezing this weekend.

Quick update. Turns out all my previous issues were due to an id10t error behind the steering wheel. We've gone on a couple 80k rides with friends in theirs and it's perfectly fine. I've been plowing snow and that kolpin 72" plow does great. No problems with the actual plow or frame. I have however snapped a couple ubolts that mount the universal plow mount to the frame. It only fastens to the frame with 4 weak ubolts. I just took care of that problem by welding it to the frame on each side.

She just fits with the plow on. My trailer is 6.5x12. The plow is 72". I have pockets for side rails on the inside of the trailer sides. Between the pockets is 75". I'm heading out to plow out a family member as I discovered that they've been buried since the last storm as the guy who plows for them is out of town.

Isn't that kind of dangerous to weld that? Isn't it better that a U-bolt breaks instead of a weld or frame? That's kind of like removing shear pins.

I had thought about that but figured my plow frame is welded to the plow truck and it's been fine without issues. I got tired of crawling around changing broken ubolts. As for shear pins, the plow mounts to the plow frame with fairly weak shear pins designed to snap.

I plowed 2hrs this morning at my place then loaded up and hauled it 40km to the kids grandfather's(from my wife's first marriage) place to plow. I was out with him for a pizza dinner yesterday and found out that he hadn't been plowed out yet since the last storm. His neighbor does it normally but is out of town. It held up fine. I plowed there 2hrs and loaded up to come back home. Unloaded and plowed another 2 hrs at home. Will this snow ever end? I was happy to see that it fit with the plow mounted on the trailer.
