Pretty horrific story. Just more proof that when we go out into the wild alone we need to be prepared to self-rescue.

Giant bull moose attacks Iditarod sled dog team, four dogs seriously injured

| February 08, 2022 05:53 PM
A massive bull moose attacked the sled dog team of a rookie musher Thursday during a training run for the Iditarod race in Alaska.
The giant moose stomped on at least four of Bridgett Watkins's dogs for over an hour, and it continued the attack after the musher fired every bullet from her gun into the animal, according to a report.
Four dogs were seriously injured and only saved when Wastkins's friends arrived with a larger caliber firearm to kill the bull moose, she said.
"This has been the most horrific past 24 hours of my life," she said.
The attack occurred during a 52-mile training run for the 1,000-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which begins on March 5 in Anchorage.

I was a big fan of Susan Butcher (God rest her soul).
I recall when a moose took out some of her dogs during the race.

What a nightmare that would have been. I wonder if she'll still compete in the iditarod? I doubt it.

I was in a store earlier this week that had a bull moose head mounted. OMG so freaking big. I can only imagine being up against a giant like that when you've emptied your gun and nothing else you can do. I would guess those dogs saved her life.

Read the article and find all the "fails" this idiot did and said:

Moose tramples Iditarod rookie's sled team for more than an hour

Four dogs that are part of a sled team were seriously injured in Alaska after being stomped over for more than an hour by a moose and were saved after a friend of the musher's killed it.

I don't think this person should be allowed to have a dog team in the remote wilderness. She can go out on her own and get killed with her cap gun but it's a tragedy that those poor dogs had to be injured unnecessarily.

The second article has more details. Notable quotes:

She said no musher would ever travel with a rifle or a large caliber gun, instead preferring to scare off animals with a flare gun. And with all the jostling of the sled, the larger guns could easily go off.

She did carry a .380 caliber gun because there are few people where she trains, and she keeps it to to deter or scare off animals.

What kind of properly stored rifle would go off from "jostling". A ".380" - that isn't big enough for most cities let alone the Alaska wilderness. What a total idiot.

I know my shit goes off all the time on my four wheeler. Hit a stump and think I blew a tire? Nope, just another random shot going off. ;)

Two things are for sure. Alaska is the one place I wouldn't be underpowered with armament. Second, I'm not trying to 'scare off' jack shit. Which brings us to the final question(s)- how many shots did she spend trying to 'scare' it? My guess is all of them.

(And if I only had a .38 I would be going for the head at that distance. May not kill it, but it would be blind, deaf and have a migraine for a while.)
