All Time Ugliest Cars??

I don't agree with a lot of those. They may be ugly to us now, but they were right there for their time. Well, except the Aztec. Actually, after reading the article, I see it was inappropriately titled. Should have been the worst cars, not ugliest. I had a Chevette, and it was the worst car I've ever owned. Bought it new and it spent more time at the dealer the first year than we had it. Back then they only had a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty, so I was stuck with the bills after that.
When I look back at high school era pictures of myself, I wonder how I could ever worn clothes that awful but, hey, I was stylin' then. Hutch

The AMC Pacer wins the ugly prize hands down, but the Vega looks pretty cool to me and shouldn't be on the list.

I don't think a lot of those deserve to be on the ugliest car list ... crappiest car list maybe but not the ugliest.

If you want to see UGLY, check out the Fiat 500, Reliant Roibin and Citroen 2CV. Now those are ugly......

They missed one that was both ugly and just plain disfunctional:

I don't know what that trailer weighs, probably 3500# or more, but this picture from AMC's sales brochure is fraudulent. My AMC Eagle 'Sports Wagon' couldn't pull my 1700 lb trailer over 60mph when the weather was warm and its primitive smog controls reduced the spark advance.

Its handling was by far the spookiest of anything I have ever driven.

I'll stop here, but the list of its deficiencies was endless. Good concept in the advertising, horrible results in the real world. And did I emphasize they were ugly?

I have to agree with you there Frank! lol
First time I ever laid eyes on one was in Lancashire, England- I was like WTHHHHH IS that thing!!??:rolf2:

Wow, memories, eh?? lol

You actually admit to buying an AMC vehicle? :yum:
1981 was years before the smaller Cherokee, Trooper, etc hit the market.

For family camping with all the diapers and everything, the only alternatives at the time were the big expensive Wagoneer, even more expensive Land Cruiser Wagon, 4x4 Suburban, and International's 'Suburban' (TravelAll?). That was about it.

I was poor then. A year-old Eagle for 7k was all I could afford. (And yes I paid cash for it!)

The Eagle got me in and out of my mining claim for several years. But I replaced it with a Trooper the first year they put a competent engine in those. (1988, when 2.6l FI replaced their dog carb-based early engine).

Here's why I needed some sort of 4x4. We darn near got trapped in here a couple of times, after it snowed all night and all I had was a 2wd F100. The mining claim is 20 miles beyond the end of the pavement.

This present Outback is the best combination yet for tiptoeing over the rough spots and going like a pre-runner on the better stuff. The Trooper was pretty good, too.

Those Eagles are, deservedly, long forgotten.

I'll pile on with those that say I too don't believe those are the ugliest.

For this conversation but to keep things balanced for AMC, I'd pull the Gremlin and in its place, put the Matador.

My sisters first car was a Gremlin. Once I saw what it could do with a 5.0L V8, I liked it... My Dad had to keep the rear loaded with sandbags just so my sister didn't smoke the tires at every intersection.

I think the Izetta should be on the list.
Man that thing qualifies for its own ugly list.

Weren't those the first thing that BMW shipped to the US? I recall a dealer who had a couple of those, then shortly he had a Japanese version from Suzuki or somebody. I doubt he sold many.

May have been the first automobile (if you can call it that) they shipped to the US. I think their motorcycle was first. This thing had a motorcycle engine. I think it got 60 or 70 mpg though.

Friend of mine had one to drive to college in the 1960's Not his idea, his dad's

Another friend had an Indian. That was cool but he got wet when it rained. :yum:

I think you are right. I should have said 'first automobile that BMW offered here'.

When I was a little kid there was a minor car dealer nearby who tried out all the odd brands. I think he had been a Hudson dealer then never found anything to replace Hudson when it folded about 1957. He briefly carried Izetta, then got a shipment of those Japanese Izetta clones, then finally got a Volvo franchise and started making money again.

I used to drool over the Volvo 544s in his showroom. Years later I eventually owned a couple of them. My second one was white like this. That was an awesome little car; a sports roadster in '47 Ford disguise.
