Abandoned by Microsoft

I will paste a sample of an e-mail that I got from our friends at Microsoft regarding my subscription to Microsoft OneCare virus software.

"Your subscription to Windows Live OneCare $49.95 is scheduled to be automatically renewed to a Free 6 month extension on Thursday, April 01, 2010. Here is a description of the service:

OneCare provides the PC care services you need to stay safe online and keep your home PCs tuned and running smoothly. Because OneCare will be discontinued in late 2010, we are no longer taking renewals. However, since you are a valued OneCare customer, we are extending your subscription for 6 months free of charge. NO ACTION IS REQUIRED. YOUR CREDIT CARD WILL NOT BE CHARGED. You can continue to enjoy the full benefits of OneCare throughout the extended term of your subscription. We will provide information on new options shortly before your subscription expires. Thank you for choosing OneCare. Offer valid in US only."

They are discontinuing the security solutions and virus protection applications to focus more on a solution for core anti-malware protection, which will address a much wider audience, by providing the ultimate incentive, the absence of a price tag. From what I am able to find out, Microsoft will replace Windows Live OneCare with a new security product, Microsoft Free “Morro” Antivirus for Windows 7, Vista SP2, SP3.
It looks like I will have to go out and get another protection program but the fact that Microsoft is dumping on all us fuddy-duddies that are holding onto XP kind of pisses me off. I just thought I would stop in, cry like a little girl and ask for suggestions on a good virus program advice.

AVAST or AVG. Both have free options and they work GREAT. I have not paid for anti virus software for years now and have been protected, no viruses.

Google either of those and download and you'll be set to go. I would first uninstall the Microsoft software and reboot two times before installing anything new.

I agree with Doc - I did think it was reboot three times to make windows clear unused drivers though.

I am not up on that so I would go with Andy's 3 reboots just to be sure. I know it seems anal but it can save you from issues down the road.

Go with Avast.

AVG will slow down a underpowered system.
Both are 100% free for personal use.

I normally would agree tsaw . I had AVG & it ran out , it was a resource hog IMO . Then I got Avast it was much better then AVG , then it expired , Then I got Avira & it ran out . Now I have Avast again & its causing all kinds of problems , constantlly updating & freezing my puter for 30 minutes at a time & it takes upto 45 minutes to start up in the morning because it updates right off & most times I have to reboot 1 or 2 times just to check my damn email .

I,d suggest Avira , Its the best I,ve found so far & never slowed my puter down at all . http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html . There all free , it just seems Avg & Avast have changed things since the last time i,ve used them . Just my opinion .

1) Malwarebytes is free. No need to purchase.
2) Since vista and windows 7 both defrag your harddrive in the background when your pc is idle there is no need to defrag your HD.
3) CCleaner takes care of what cleancache does.

Now wait a damn minute. How the hell did I qoute that - and it don't match wat i quoted?

Thanks to all of you for the great suggestions. Like I said earlier, I’m just a fuddy-duddy and I don’t like changing when I have something that works just fine. Hell, I didn’t even get rid of Windows 98 until I had too.

I dunno 'bout that. My new 7 G71 HP was starting to slow down, even running all those cleaners and anti-virus things being used.
I ran the 7 defrag multiple times. still sucked. I downloaded Auslogics. Ran the defrag and optimize, and this was almost immediatley after running 7 defrag 3 times in a row.

The fist auslogics run took over 4 hours! After that, the laptop was way faster than when brand new and no junk on it. Now Auslogics takes about 20 minutes for defrag and optimize.

As for Malewarebytes, the free version offers no scheduling and no realtime coverage.

Wow! Microsoft sure has turned a lot of people into computer mechanics due to all the design flaws and security holes in every one of their products. I feel somewhat jealous as I sit here with my MacBook piece of shit that keeps me ignorant of its innards, because the damn thing just keeps on tickin', and never gives me a problem. You guy sure are lucky, not to mention how much money ahead you are with PCs.

Dargo? Is that you? You know that multiple personalities are against the rules at FF.

Jev

Let's see, $549 for a 17" screen laptop with G wireless, win7, lightscribe, webcam, paid 120 for office pro 2003 on ebay, and I think 24 for malewarebytes. So I have 700 bucks into a kickass laptop that has not given me any worries or problems since I tuned her up at the start.

Good for you and that expensive apple - how much did that cost?

Just seems odd to me to suggest using another microsoft product to replace one their no longer going to support , to use to help protect it from itself .

The only problems I ever had are caused by microsoft updates , or anything else they try to forcefeed me . :whistling:

$850 for the 1.83 ghz with 2 gig or ram factory remanufactured core-duo back in 2006. Like a Timex, it's still ticking, and virus, spyware and malware free. Kind of like the difference between an Audi and a Yugo.:yum::yum::yum:

I’m not complaining because of the operating system, it’s just that I feel that Microsoft could have kept things as they were. I was perfectly happy with the maintenance system that I had been using.

We have had this computer since early 2004 and it hasn’t given me any real problems. I do like the fact that if I decide to upgrade my disk drives or add programs, I can readily find what I am looking for at a reasonable price.

The only problem I have had with my current computers was while in school, I tried to create a duel boot on my laptop with Windows and SUSE Linux so I could do assignments for Linux at home. This gave my poor laptop a terrible case of digital indigestion, so $10.00 later, I received a restore disk in the mail and the disaster was averted.
The college that I attended had an Apple lab but it was just for graphic art students and they (Apple) are very fine machines and as a matter of fact, have some of the highest cutomer satisfaction reports, but dollar for dollar, Microsoft still has an edge.

... but dollar for dollar, Microsoft still has an edge.
Riiiiight. And Obama is genuinely concerned with the welfare of every American, and will provide affordable healthcare that also reduces the deficit. :yum::yum::yum: You crack me up.:yum::yum::yum:

I have had no problems using MS free antivirus software.
They should of offered this years ago.
MS is finally getting serious with this problem.
Apple is also having this threat.

Obvious Apple fan boy obviously.
A Mac is nothing special. The premium price you pay is nothing but a gift to your hero Steve. A Windows PC can run Mac OS X. The hardware is the same. But can your Mac os x run every windows program? Nope! But mac users then say a Mac can run both windows and mac on the same machine. Whats the point of paying more for a mac other than being able to run os x that has around 10% of the os market - and you still need windows to play games, and run the programs that don;t work on os x.

If I had mac os x and win 7 on a duel boot set up.. I would boot into os x and look around.. and reboot into win 7. No need for it.

Sorry, not taking the bait you're dangling. We're both right, just I'm more right.:yum:

I am still scratching my head and wondering how me being upset with Microsoft for discontinuing a program, degraded into a political debate but I suspect someone may have skipped their Prozac today.

I am just a little leery of Microsoft’s new “free” program that will work on Windows 7 as well as XP. The last information that I had, it was indicated be some IT specialists, upgrading directly from XP to Windows 7 was so problematic, that you would be well advised to purchase another computer.
I usually wait for these new “Too Good To Be True” free programs have been out for a while so others can workout the bugs.
Do any of you folks have any thoughts or experience with going from Win7 to XP?

There is no upgrade from xp to win 7. A fresh install is all you can do. As far as going from win 7 to xp.. why would anyone ever do that?

Oh, sorry, a little dyslexia there for a second. I was just interested in the upgrade to win7 not the other way around.

xp to W7 - I've heard horror stories of unavailable drivers for older peripherals.

If I still had my XP laptop, it would remain XP until it died, which, in fact it did, which is why I bought the new one.

Ok .. I'll give you some info on that. Win 7 has been MS's biggest most successful re-coding ever. Vista sucked. Everyone knows that. When MS received all the feed back on that failure.. they got a team of over 1,000 programmers to go and look over the code. What they did was analyze what - and where there was slowdowns. And optimized the whole os.
Now.. XP - to Vista left a lot of drivers incompatible.
So, if you go from XP to Win 7 - you are going to have issuses. But I can tell you first hand.. my computer started out with XP.. and I'd have to shut it down daily. When I upgraded to Vista - i could leave it running for a week.. once I put on Win 7.. it runs for 30 days - without a reboot..
and it runs as snappy as a fresh start.
If you are running XP.. you will experience the same feeling as getting a whole new computer when you install win 7.
