Power Outage (now) . . . hate the generator noise!!!

Things could be worse, at least I have a generator.

Not all the neighbors have generators and are probably pretty darn cold by now. Its mid-20's but windy. So the wind will cool the houses pretty quickly without the benefit of a furnace. The outage is only a couple hours old now, and hopefully won't last much longer??? We've actually been lucky so far this year, we usually have a couple winter outages ... seems like most of them occur in the middle of the night and when the temps are below Zero. This year the power has been more reliable so I guess I shouldn't complain.

BUT I REALLY NEED TO GET A BIGGER MUFFLER FOR MY GENERATOR.

I hate that noise.

Anyone modify their generator to accept a larger muffler, maybe something like a car or large motorcycle muffler?

My brother added a muffler to his Onan and that thing is quiet . It sets in the garage and the exhaust is ducted outside and you cannot even hear it run .

Mine also sits in the garage and I'd like to duct it outside too. When I run it I simply open the doors. But that is not always ideal.

Any chance you can snap some photos of your brother's set up?

I'll be glad too next time I am in Truckee . I can tell you he went to the muffler shop and had then make a slip joint pipe that attaches/clamps to the end of the present exhuast , goes into another muffler then exits through the wall . He used a heat shield where it passes through the wall . All your hear is a low hum when it runs .

What engine is on it? Is it a bolt on using 2 bolts or is it threaded into the head?

Briggs and Stratton V Twin Vanguard, I'd have to go down to look but its a spark arrestor type muffler and I believe its a bolt on.

Bob Skurka .... quit bitching. It's 20°, the wind is howling and you're inside all warm and cozy, playing on the computer, watching tv and eating popcorn and you're complaining about the noise of the generator.

Actually, when we lose power, my wife does the same thing. Me, I find it comforting to hear that hum outside. As long as it's running, I know that everything is going to be OK. I still want to upgrade it but it seems that we haven't lost power for any length of time for quite a few years so maybe it isn't worth it.

We ran a 25Kw unit here for 6 and a half days recently, and another 10Kw for three. Not often we need them, but when you do.....there is nothing better to own. Besides Bob, you are not going to have any stale gas in it now....
