MLB in the U.S.

Dargo

Like a bad penny...
I love it! :yum: Two major league baseball teams meet in a stadium that holds around 75,000 people and manage to pack in almost 400 people! :yum: :yum: MLB now

That about sums it up for my thoughts on major league baseball...

A while back there was the infamous baseball players strike (2002?). As far as I'm concerned, that was the final nail in the coffin.

When the Indians still played in Cleveland Stadium, which held around 80,000, there were MANY times in the 70's and 80's when they had crowds that size.

The last time I was at a major league baseball game was two days before the 1994 strike (the year with no World Series). I still peek in to check what's going on but won't pay money to watch.

I used to go to games in the old Cleveland Stadium. A friend knew the general manager so we got free tickets right behind home plate same area as the players wifes and the scouts. I really enjoyed going to those games. But it always looked so empty. I'm sure there were a few thousand fans there but the place was so big, it still seemed empty. Totally different story when the Browns played. I never sat in the dog pound but tried out most other areas.

When Jacobs field opened we got the free tickets but they were off to the side and the stadium was packed. Not near as much fun.

Man, they should have given all tickets away free for that Marlins game. Do you know how hard it is for a TV network to try to get "that shot" that makes it appear as if the stands are full?! With an estimated 400 people there, I'd venture to guess that half of those were either stadium employees or relatives of the players. Hell, they should have paid people $20 to show up for the game to save face. The more people see empty seats on MLB highlight clips, the more the sport declines in credibility. I played organized baseball from the time I was about 5 years old until I was 16. I loved the game. But, somewhere along the line, things changed and I just lost interest. As a matter of fact, true story, my last at bat was a single off of a guy named Don Mattingly. Yup, that Don Mattingly. He was a pitcher in high school and led his team to state titles. He was a man playing with boys back then. He still lives just out the road from me. Not at all like we're buddies or anything, but he is involved with local charities and I see him a few times a year.

But I digress; for all intents and purposes, MLB seems to be in its death throes.

I played until I was 16 or so also, then played on a work softball team up until 10 years ago. I like playing but never have liked watching baseball. I will not go to games anymore nor watch a game on TV all year. Sometimes I watch a playoff or world series game, but it depends on who is playing. I enjoy the highlight reels but that's about it.

The MLB season is to damned long and people lose interest after about 20 games. Geeze...how many games does an MLB team play each season? I can't remember, but it's just too many.

Look at football. Most NFL teams fill their stadiums, even if they suck. Why? Because the season is short and people look forward to the fall football season.

Make baseball season 3 months like normal sports and fans will fill the stadiums.

Congrats on your 1000th post Av8tr!!!!!!

Got to disagree that basketball is not even a sport. I love basketball but the NBA is the least favorite. College hoops are awesome.
I do agree that the NBA season is drug out way to long though.
I know baseball teams play around 160 games a season, not counting playoffs. I've no idea how many games NBA teams play, but it's probably close.

Football lasts 5 months; Baseball 7 months.

What professional 'normal' sport only lasts 3?

I think it's safe to say that College Sports are overtaking Pro Sports in popularity. I think people are getting tired of the over-paid criminal scum that are overtaking pro-sports.

Of course, I don't really qualify as an expert. I haven't gone out of my way to watch any sports other than maybe the Super Bowl in at least 10 years.

The regular football season, excluding the playoffs is about 3 months, MinutiaBoy. :moon:
So are most school sports.

I watch very few sporting events on TV anyway because I have a life, and feel no need to relive my "glory days" on the playing fields, like many of the "The-older-I-get-the-better-I-was" crowd likes to do.

I don't know, I get really excited when curling (if that's how you spell it :o) gets into their playoff season!!

I guess I'm too old and from too small of a town, but my high school never had: a swim team, a hockey team, a gymnastic team, a soccer team, a LaCrosse team or any other multitude of team sports that are around now. Hell, our idea of a "swim" was being tossed into the Ohio River.

Maybe that "wife carrying" sport only lasts 3 months. I'd imagine the wives would get pretty cranky if it lasted much longer...
