Background:
My dad died when I was in 7th grade. He was riddled with cancer and for the last 3 years of his life, he was either in the hospital or invalid at home.

I was too young to grasp the situation, and never really talked tom pops about stuff I wished I had now.

Recently:
My mom had a minor stroke (maybe, the docs aren't sure yet what happened). She shows no symptoms of a stroke. As a result of the realization that mom is old and may pass in the near future, we siblings decided we'd better make sure moms stuff is on order.

We gathered all the relevant papers and things for safe-keeping, and are currently verifying that everything is still valid and is legal. In that process, we found a Bronze Star pops had earned while serving in WWII. There's nothing there that says what he did to earn this. I'd like to know.

Is there any way to find out?
 
Don't know the dept to contact, but I'm sure whichever branch he was in should have a record of it. Please let us know if you find out. Hopefully you can find his rank and service # in all your mom's papers. A DD214, his discharge papers would give you a leg up.

Fred, when I was discharged, the Army encouraged me to have my DD214 recorded at the county courthouse. You might check there for a copy. Once you find the DD214, the rest of the search should be much easier.

You might also contact your Representative or Senator. I've had good luck with them on this type of issue.
 
I happen to have a copy of my DD214 sitting on my desk.

Block 13 (Decorations, Medals, badges, citations...) is where it is listed. It states what medals are received but not what they were for.

If you find your Dad's DD214, hopefully it's in a folder where he also kept the citation received with the Bronze Star. It's normally a one-page certificate. Good luck!

Take copies of all you've got to the VFW rep at the nearest VA facility; they'll help you find out what you want at no cost.
