Wisconsin, WTH?

The low tonight is -3 degrees!!! I have to say I am somewhat concerned about this weather. Is it a dry cold or something? Is it going to be as cold as the desert is hot? The desert was hot but it was a dry heat and it was completely unbearable.

Brents, when the temps are below zero, especially when there is any wind, it hurts to be outside. No other way to say it, it just hurts. Cover all exposed skin, dress in layers. Wool is your friend. Cotton will kill you, if it gets wet you will lose fingers, toes or anything else. Wool maintains insulation value even when wet. Cotton freezes. Do not wear cotton socks, etc.

Screw that...stay in the hotel! Preferably with someone to keep warm with under the blankets! :w00t2:

This is what is commonly referred to as a gentlemen's class. No yelling, push ups, or surviving in the great outdoors. This is phase one of the school that I need to make lieutenant colonel. So it will be comprised of lectures, papers, and discussions. The coldest I should be will be going from my room to the rental car and to the school house.

Maybe you can take your sleeping bag and a blow up matress with you to the meeting and just stay there....order in, and you will be there for the next day waiting. That way you will only have to brave that cold twice. going in the building from your car to leaving the building to your car. You may want to pay someone (big bucks)to go out before you and start your car so it can have time to warm up.

Brents .... lieutenant colonel ... I'm impressed. :clap::clap::clap:

But let me say that this "dry" cold and "dry" heat thing never did impress me. This Texas boy has been in Wyoming when it hit -30 degrees with the locals telling me, "Yea, but it's a dry cold". Bull Hockey, ofcourse it's a dry cold. At 30 below all the water vapor in the air has frozen out and fallen on the ground but it's still friggin' cold. I was walking around like the Michilin man, I had so many clothes on.

I've also been in Nevada when it's been 120 degrees for day after day. Again, it was a "dry" heat but tell that to my feet when the rubber soles on my boots started to melt. No, 120 degrees is hot no matter whether it is dry or humid but 95 degrees and 95 % humidity is just miserable. I've also been there and done that. As others have said, stay inside, order in, crank up the TV and kick back. Nothing with any common sense goes outside willingly in those kind of temperatures.

You can ask Redneck.....I'm a girl all the way when it comes to roughing it:yum:

You sound like my wife. When I think of all the places we've gone and all the things that we did in our younger days, if she has to stay the night in a Motel 6 these days, that is definitely roughing it.:biggrin: Then again, maybe she has earned a comfort in her waning years. :hide::hide::hide:

I was the same way....I loved primitive camping....but now I would rather have a room some where.
Your wife has good sense....I like her

Have fun, Brents. Your neighborhood at McCoy is gonna get 4-6" of snow today, too.

Lows by next week Tuesday and Wednesday will be in the teens to twenties below zero.:doh:

(Btw -Congratulations! Can we call you Colonel Brents now?)

All I can do is laugh. :whistling: It is going to get colder when the snow goes through.

I will be driving right by you on Sunday evening.

Not yet. I still have about 19 months time in grade left. So around Nov 2010 I will be eleigible for lieutenant colonel. At that point my promotion packet will go before a Department of the Army promotion board. They will make sure that I have this school, time in grade and look at my evaluations and then if they decide I fit all the criteria then comes the hard part. Even though the DA has said he is fit to be an LTC, I am still in the Alabama National Guard and there has to be a LTC slot within the state. So at that point I will be what they call "DA Select". Usually within 6 months of selection there will be a state board. I might not even be picked up on that board. Alabama has had more stringent requirements for their officers than the active Army at times. On my promotion to Major I was selected on the DA Board, but because I got my required school at the last moment possible and my certificate did not get into my state packet, I was delayed 6 or 8 months. So you see I am getting my schooling nearly 2 years ahead of time. And because of the level, LTC, it means I am probably doing it 4 or 5 years ahead of time. It really competitive now.

Don't try to take a deep breath. That really hurts...

I can't believe this. Some of you guys drive sno-cats.

I have two jean jackets. One of them is lined, the other unlined.

It's snowing here today, which means it's warmer. I'll wear the unlined jacket. My first chore for the day is hitting the gym. I'll wear my gym shorts.

I use the truck's heater air to defrost the windshield. Yeah, it's not August out there, but it's not Canada, either.

If anyone needs more than that it's Locutus. He has mountain air and ice to contend with...

For you guys in the Chicago area, I will be arriving in Chicago today, 11 Jan at 11:50 CST and will be there just over an hour. I didn't mention earlier because it's not that much time. However, on the 24th I will be there at 8:00 CST for 4 hours. I will be arriving on flight 4186.

Chicago has been duly warned. As I speak, dogs, cats, small children and goats are being locked in safe places. Neighbors to the airport are filling the knot holes in their fences.

Your leaving Wisconsin? Dang will be in your area tonight. But that is ok the only thing I am upset about is we really didn't get any cold weather. :hammer::hammer: Your lucky :whistling: Hope you have a safe trip

OK, its cold up here, but not as bad as I thought. Tonight we were told not to go out and get lost because is was supposed to get to -20 to -30 with windchill.

Flying into Chicago yesterday and looking down at the city, I couldn't help but wonder if Sushi wasn't down there somewhere looking up Amy Winehouse on the internet.

FYI: The high for today here in God's Country will be a balmy 0° and tomorrow's forecast is calling for a high of -10°. We're under a windchill warning due to the wind picking up today and overnight to 10-15 gusting to 30 mph. (Which gives a windchill of up to -50°)

Things are looking up, though. Back to the +20°'s over the weekend into next week.

Just a little something to keep you motivated, Colonel. :shifty:

Yesterday I took a "mental health day" (yes, insane people take them, as well) and decided not to work or go to the gym.

I got caught up on computer work and a light breakfast, but by mid-afternoon I wanted to go out. Cold doesn't bother me.

I slipped on my lined jacket, a scarf and a hat, and an old thick pair of padded riding gloves I still have. I went for a walk.

I made it out about half-way to our local highway, and then had to turn around. The wind and sub-zero temperatures had worked their way through my right-hand glove and numbed two of my fingers. My face was frozen.

Yikes, that hasn't happened to me since 1958. The wind and temperatures here are just plain uncomfortable. The newspaper says today is worse.
