What is the difference between Debate and Argument?

The difference can basically be described in the context of two words.

Debate is discussion with a sense of objectivity, based upon opposing points of view, using facts and accepted dogma as support.

An argument is discussion (often loud) with a sense of subjectivity, based upon personal opinion and opposing ideology, often laced with overt or covert name-calling as support.

Winning a debate is often deemed commendable. Winning an argument ... not so much.

debates are often won with votes by uninformed voters.
Arguments are often won with fists and clubs by impassioned voters.

Debates are conducted by conservatives, and turn into arguments by liberals when presented with facts. JMHO

Debates present points of discussion.

Arguments usually involves insults and name calling.

FF "debates" typically end up as arguments and it is just as likely to be a conservative that is starting the insults as it it a liberal.
