Gone But Not Forgotten
We are under a freezing rain WARNING and it is putting a nice coating on everything. The main interstate is shut down for multiple accidents right by the Corning glass works. I am not rushing to go outside as my foot is killing me after going to the podiatrist yesterday. Last thing I need is to take a fall on my ass. They are still saying it should warm up enough by noon to melt it off but the ice coating on my grill looks pretty bad. I will wait till it melts to worry about loading the boiler. Propane boiler can run for a while.:hammer:

Has it turned to rain yet? Ours stayed as rain and it looks like we're both going to get it all day long.
Going to have to throw on the raincoat as I am grilling today...

Well I just made bacon and eggs. The wife is out taking care of the boiler and the chickens. Snow mixing in at the moment.
My grill has a full coat of ice on it. Wife just came in and said it's bad but breaks up if you walk in the grass. Damn dish must have a coat of ice on it as the signal is going in and out.

We have warmed up now and it seems to be melting off. The grill and vehicles just seem wet instead of ice covered. Looks like rain the rest of the weekend as well.

Muley, I'm glad that your weather incident didn't affect you too much.

Of all the things that weather can do to you, I hate freezing rain the most.

Whenever we have a freezing rain event forecast before it happens I get into my routine, fill all the vehicles, fill all the gas cans, check generators, check flashlights and lanterns, check chain saws, get water barrel ready to be filled, get 5 gallon water containers out and ready, make cup of coffee and relax.

Everytimes it happens it is a disaster for days. The power always goes out. You can sit inside the house and listen to the limbs break off the trees. It sounds like a shotgun being fired. The last one we had the noise of limbs breaking kept us awake all night and drove the dog crazy.

I hate ice storms... Muley - did that one that wiped out W. NY/Buffalo about 5 or 10 years back hit you as well? That was a mess for a couple years.

Hell, we didn't even need ice. I was working in the basement last week and a sub-station somewhere nearby blew. Everyone within 25 miles of it were without power.

No, I was still down in southern Pa. when that one came through. I don't sweat it too much as long as I have fuel on hand for the generator. If it was real bad we would just ration our use of it to stretch our fuel. I always have enough on hand for about 50 hours of run time.

Ice storms are why I keep a couple hundred pounds of salt around during the winter, have studded tires, and vbar chains for the truck and tractor. Once you've been through a bad one you want to make sure you are prepared.

Same here. Have chains for all 4 wheels on the truck and backhoe. They are the only way to break up the ice. 18,000lb. 4x4 backhoe tears it up pretty good with chains. Otherwise it slides around terrible. The truck has 4 studded diggers for plowing with that will go on as soon as I use the last of the wood off the back of it.

I bet those backhoe chains are less than fun to mount. I know I hate doing the rears on my tractor. ;)

I have a pallet of left over bricks (2-3 layers) that I slide into the back of my plow truck each winter. Works great and has a nice low profile. - easy to load with the tractor and pallet forks too. :thumb:

I have a 1600lb. counterweight that I sit over the axle with a 4x4 frame to keep it from sliding around. I just pick it up with the backhoe or tractor. Have not needed it since we moved here but if we get a real big snow it goes on in less than 5 minutes. That and chains let you go through anything. During the one blizzard I was pushing snow with the plow all the way up and going around picking up nurses to replace the wife and neighbor lady. They had banned all non essential travel but medical folks were exempted. After being stuck there for 36 hours the girls were glad to see me.

These days I don't drive in the white stuff besides in East Texas it never lasts more than a day or two on the roads. I just stay home and inside. It's warmer there. :yum:
