The Nashville Floods

The most costly non-hurricane disaster to hit the USA and almost nobody even knows about it. My cousins are living through it, they, very fortunately are on high ground in their condo complex but were on an 'island' in the middle of this mess.

I've you didn't follow the event you are not to blame, the media didn't either :hammer:

Some striking images, many people looking at the video presume these images are of New Orleans. Except there is no looting, no shooting at national guardsmen, no violence. There is an amazing amount of destruction and the will to get past it, clean it up, and move one.

Enjoy the video:

I cant watch the video at work, but what do you think the difference between the people of NO and Nashville is? Besides of course Blues vs Country music.

I dunno about the people of Nashville. While I have relatives there I don't ever spend time in the city, to me that city is simply something we drive through on our way to somewhere else.

My impression of the people of New Orleans is that they are leaches sucking off a very corrupt local and state government that is full of graft and back room deals. I've got lots of business friends down there, and the only way to get things done is to buy off petty bureaucrats and politicians so you can get the needed permits, contracts, etc.

Mel. it was a non-story because the people of Nashville stood up, shook themselves off and started to work fixing things. In N.O. people sat on their asses and whined for the gubmint to come in and fix it for them. I carried supplies into N.O. after Katrina and came away with the impression that the world would be a better place if it had washed away completely.

Here's why there was no looting in Nashville.

That picture was from the New Orleans flood. It's been around for a long time.

Probably from Metairie, LA, its a suburb of New Orleans that was pretty hard hit but saved by the neighbors who banded together. There were very few problems there an it was publicized pretty well the residents took to armed patrols to keep the place safe.

If I can believe a guy I've worked with on several business ventures over the last 20 years, it was taken in Metairie and his house is just out of the picture. No, he wasn't in the picture, but knows several in the picture and said that they would most certainly shoot first and ask questions later.

So was is the real difference, socio-economic level, political affiliation, latitude? What are you driving at?

I think the Katrina and the Nashville storms both affected all socio-economic levels and all political affiliations.

Well, I am just asking, we have had 10 posts or so and I am just wondering what the difference in the two cities is attributed to.

I'd guess it was simply the attitudes of the people. As suggested earlier in the thread, people got up, pulled together, helped each other, and got to work in Nashville.

My cousin lives there, her condo was not flooded but many around her were, essentially she was living on an island in her condo complex. She said that her kids came home from college, brought friends, with them, and volunteered helping anyone and everyone. Seems that was happening all over the city with people helping people.

So the difference? Perhaps attitude?

mak2,

Bob has hit it on the head in my opinion. I was stationed down there for two years and couldn't wait to get out. While it certainly doesn't apply to all the NOLA residents, a sizable percentage are lazy bums with an entitlement attitude; they don't feel they have to work, the gubmint will take care of them:whistling:. That's what its there for, right?:hammer::w00t2:

Well I lived in the state of Louisiana for 1 year and now wouldn't fly over it and take a dump on it. If it isn't the worse state in the country it is sure in the top 3 for sure. Government there is a complete joke.

...a sizable percentage are lazy bums with an entitlement attitude...

Add to that the politics of the two states. Remember N.O. mayor Ray Nagin's classic "chocolate city" statement? Nagin, and then governor Kathleen Blanco, were both idiots at the onset of the Katrina storm. For those who don't recall it, both told the federal government they could handle things themselves. In fact the same day that Blanco stated "I believe we are prepared. That's the one thing that I've always been able to brag about." she then later recanted and begged for help. Had she, and Nagin, both of whom had plenty of warning from the weather service, asked to have FEMA put on alert/ready status in advance then its possible that things could have mobilized much quicker.

There is no question that LA is corrupt from bottom to top. Nothing gets done in that state without graft, corruption or bribes being involved.

In ANY event like this, the Federal Government can only react AFTER THE FACT and due to jurisdiction issues really needs to be invited in by the states. Don't expect much quick help in these cases.

But I really think that the competence of the local government, combined with the attitudes of the residents is the critical difference.

Which came first the corrupt, inefficient government, or the entitlement do-nothing attitude of the constituents?

I love TN, it is one of the places I would like to retire to. I was once on FL when a house burned about 25 miles from the nearest firestation. I was in a boat on the Swanne (sp?) river. The house was close to the river. They actually pulled out the lawnchairs and watched it burn. I wanted to dock and at least spray water on it, but teh local we was with pointed out the owner could be in one of those lawnchairs. Nobody else got up to spray water on it. DIfferent attitude.

I lived there for 18 years and would go back in a second. The so called corrupt government only exist in the cities just like anywhere else. The people are fun loving and mind there own business. To put LA below NY, CA, IL, MD and a handful of others is just not knowing the state that well. Some of the best places to live are those that are a generation behind.
