Statistics for accidents involving trikes vs two wheeled bikes

Do they keep stats on the type of bike involved in a crash.
I suspect trikes are easier to see therefore in less accidents.
All speculation with no stats to back it up. Please post stats if they exist.
Thanks.

I am unaware of any stats that separate 2 versus 3 wheel motorcycles.

But if you read the actual data, it is pretty obvious that there is a super lopsided majority of 2 wheel vehicles in the studies. In fact of the data that I have actually dug into I don't recall ever seeing a 3 wheel vehicle specifically mentioned.

My guess is the greatest danger to a 3 wheel motorcycle would be when a car/truck crosses over into the right of way of the 3 wheel vehicle. Basically oncoming traffic turning left in front of a motorcycle, or similar issue.

Many of the single vehicle accidents involve motorcycles crashing into stationary objects, sliding off the roadway in a curve, etc. Generally I think those types of accidents may be far more common with 2 vs 3 wheel as any minor distraction on a 2 wheel can lead to those types of misjudgments but less so on a 3 wheel.

I believe you nailed it Bob. :tiphat:
Still looking for stats but so far no luck.

Thank You Chowderman. :tiphat: Interesting stats.
Exactly what i was looking for but did not find.

This doesn't actually answer your question Doc, but as a Radiologist, and seeing many people who have crashed, those who ride trikes seem to be older. I believe that would somewhat skew the stats, as people generally slow down some, and are more cautious riders, as they age. Speaking personally, I don't take near the risks now when riding, as I did 20 years ago, and imagine in 20 more years, will ride with more caution than I do now.

Yep, you are correct.
I have been digging looking for more stats when I have the time. How many two wheeled and 3 wheeled vehicles are on the road? I've found the total motorcycles registered listed by state but was not sub divided by type. If I could find that info then I could calculate ratios.

I agree age probably does play a factor but that is something I have not found any info on either. I suspect your suspicions are right on. Older equates to less likely to do dumb stuff.

somewhere I upon-ed a statistic, , , 40 year old males are predominantly the motorcycle fatalities.
indeed, one would think it's the 18-20 year old wild&crazy types, but apparently not....

I’m 68 and I ride a R1150 GS and a Ural Gear Up, the Ural being a side car bike has reverse like a car and you never put your feet down even while crashing. Don’t ask me how I know that. With my experience with the Ural and being older, I would recommend one for older riders. Three wheels seem to be safer than two. My giant BMW has a tipping point and if you mess with gravity by exceeding it, over it goes. I don’t mean once moving because it’s a dream moving, however in parking lots it will try to kill you at every moment. I love the Ural because your never going to drop it and have to pick it up. I even ride in the snow sometime.

The ultimate safe all weather trike. Rollcage lap belt, registered as a motorcycle, very stable and fast like 80 mph passing speed. Great in high winds. Heated but air conditioning optional.IMG_0115.JPGIMG_0113.JPGIMG_0114.JPG
