Re: ST 4 restoration

Hi Robert, Can you tell us more about your unit? It appears to be an earlier production unit, possibly from the early or mid-1960's?

Nice photos, but it looks like you have a lot of work in front of you!

If I recall from your last visit here you were looking for a drive belt called a Variator Belt. Did you ever find the VARIATOR belt for your Snow Trac? Here is a link to a thread about the Variator belts in case you never found a source. http://www.forumsforums.com/3_9/showthread.php?t=5894&highlight=variator

Are your plans to do any upgrades to the Snow Trac, or just to bring it back to original condition? What condition is the engine in, does it work, does it require rebuilding or will you swap in a new engine?

Here are some of the photos from his website, but there are A LOT MORE for you all to look at :cool2:

Wow it looks great! What are the white markings you painted on the front fenders and also on the sides on the rear of the cabin?

Hello,
my aspiration was to rebuild the ST in the orginal condition, how you see it a view pictures before.
the patches on the front fenders are the tactical sign from the army unit the ST was in duty. (BWErbst.52)
the rear patches is the sign from a club who restorate old military vehicles.

Could you post close up photos of those tactical signs and patches? We have a few members here who want to restore their Snow Trac's to military configuration so any information you can give would be really appreciated!:weneedpic

Hello, I have only this close up photo at this time..

my ST was from 1967 til 1974 in duty by the german montain troops. My informtion is that the german army have only this Snow Trac.

the diamter of the tactical sign is 17cm, the sign in the middle from this is from the mountain troops, the two circle around are from the testing center of the german army.
the left patches is not orginal, its from the reservist assosiation from the Bundeswehr.

Oh, I have this one forgotten..

this ist the tactical singn from the maintenance/repair troop of the Bundeswehr,
the letters RAG-HMF (reservist-assosiation-historic-military-vehicles) is not orginal, at this place is usually the number/code from the batallion/platoon who the vehicles is in work.

It looks like you have shovels mounted to boths sides of your Snow Trac. How do you mount a shovel to the Snow Trac without scratching the paint? Did you put some sort of pad behind the shovel? Or are the shovels held a small distance away from the body so they don't scratch the paint? Can we get some CLOSE UP photos of the attachements you used to hold the shovels?

Hello,
on one side I have mounted a shovel and on the other side a pick. The distance from the body is 0,5cm and so they don`t scratch the paint.
These holders are used on several military vehicle in the German Army.

Moorbagger,
Would you please take a close up picture of your grousers or Cleats. They look very unique. Thanks.

Hi, I have two kinds of cleats: the mounted and ca. 200 piece who you see in the box. I think this one are for summer use, or have anyone another idea?

The ones fon the bucket are indeed for summer use. The others are for extreme traction (for a snowcat) on a snowy sidehill. Those look to be forged to me. I wish I had one to look at close up. BUT such is life. The other ones are made from diffrent layers of steel and are great for dirt and such. I like how you ran your exhaust system. Have any more pictures of how you routed it under the Snow Trac? Thanks.

Hi,
I have only these two pictures. I go the easiest way :)
The two pipes from the exhaust muffler in one and then with a 5,5cm tube on the left side straight ahead to the back.
I hope you see it better on the picture.
Tomorrow I make a new picture, where you see it better.
